Since the last time they fought in it and the war is raging between the two dogs. Indeed, the anxiety surrounded Spitz — he is the leader and chief of the pack — that this strange southern dog will take his place. And indeed, Buck was strange to him; he had met many southern dogs before and showed no strength, whether in the camp or during travel journeys, they were all very weak, unable to bear the hard work, the harsh cold, and hunger. But Buck was different; he competed with the Huskies in strength and ferocity and cunning, he was a great dog and what made him represent a greater danger was that his experience with the man in the red coat taught him to control his anger and to be patient. He was clever, and his ability to wait on fate itself was from the cunning of the fiercest dogs.

All the dogs knew that the wheel of war would turn between Bac and Spitz for the leadership of the herd; indeed Bac wanted that position. He was feeling inside him a kind of special pride, which all the other dogs traveling with him felt. This pride was what drove them to work seriously and not to surrender. And this pride was what changed the nature of Dave and Sulex's situation every morning and turned them from two grim and wicked dogs to two ambitious and enthusiastic dogs; this pride was what drove them to continue every day. As for Spitz, this pride was what made him a leader, and it was also what drove him to punish all the dogs that do not keep up with the herd or try to avoid the hard work, and this pride was also what made him fear Bac.

Indeed, Buck was representing a threat to Spitz as the leader of the pack throughout the time; when he prevented him from punishing the dogs that were not working diligently. And on one of the nights, it snowed heavily, and in the morning, Baike — who did not like hard work ever — did not appear and hid in his hole under a layer of a foot of snow. Francois called to him and began to search for him, and Spitz became furious and started to roam the camp in fury, smelling the ice and digging in every place, and he roared with a loud voice until indeed Buck heard him from his den and was trembling from the terror.

But when Spitz found him and tried to punish him, Bak jumped between them and pushed Spitz back, and Baik was trembling with fear, but when he saw what happened, he felt overwhelming happiness and jumped on Spitz. Bak no longer remembered the meaning of the just battle, and he pounced on Spitz, but soon Francois separated them and punished Bak, while Spitz punished Baik.

Whenever the herd approached closer to Dawson, Buck continued to prevent Spitz from being punished by the other dogs, but he was doing this smartly as he was waiting for the moment when Francois would step away. Many of the other dogs - except Dave and Solex - began to break away from control, and things started to go awry; thus the dogs began to fight for a long time and cause problems, and Buck was always the cause, and he was always successful in keeping Francois busy. On his part, Francois knew that a fierce battle would occur one day between Buck and Spitz, and whenever he heard the sounds of fighting between the dogs he thought that they were clashing again.

But the opportunity never presented itself before them, and the herd reached Dawson after the gloomy afternoon of one of the days, and everyone is still waiting for the great battle. And in Dawson, there were many men and an uncountable number of dogs, all of them working hard. Throughout the day, the dogs were pulling sledges in long rows above the main road back and forth, and at night Buck could hear the ringing of the bells hanging from the necks of the running dogs. The dogs were pulling the necessary trunks of the trees needed for building the huts or lighting the fire to the mines, for the dogs were doing all the work that the horses did in Judge Miller's home in Santa Clara Valley. Buck sometimes met some of the southern dogs, but most of them were of the husky breed that had been raised for this type of work since their puppyhood. And every night, the dogs sang together three times, at nine, then at twelve, then at the third hour, and the song was strange and unfamiliar, and Buck loved their participation.

وَقَدْAnd

And indeed that song which the husky dogs sing is profoundly sorrowful in the shadows of the northern lights that loom in the horizon, and seems like the tongues of fire and the twinkling stars in the sky and the frozen ground beneath the layers of snow; when the song is interspersed with long calls and a crying-like sound. And that song was an ancient song, one of the first songs that the early husky dogs were singing years ago. And when Bak was singing along with it, he felt the ambiguity and fear that the darkness and the snow spread.

The herd left Dawson after seven days and set off above the Yukon road, returning from where it started to the Diya valley and the Sult Water area. This time, Peru was carrying messages of greater importance than those he brought to Dawson. And he was as proud of his work as his dogs were of theirs; therefore he decided that the team would make the trip in a timely manner, and he had many reasons to believe that his dogs could do that. The week during which the dogs rested helped them regain their health and filled them with strength and energy. The road, which had been very smooth during the outgoing journey, had become more solid thanks to the passage of the other traveling teams which came after them, as the northern western condition decided to leave food and supplies for the men and dogs in two or three places on the road, and then the team was traveling with a lighter load than that which it had carried in the outgoing journey.

On the first day, the dogs traveled fifty miles, and the next day they increased their speed on the Yukon road on their way to a place called Pili. But running at this speed caused many problems for Francois; Buck was causing many troubles, and the dogs were no longer pulling the sled as a single team, and they no longer feared Spitz, as Buck had stolen half a fish from him one night and ate it joyfully under Buck's protection, and on another night Dab and Jo fought with Spitz and the latter had to surrender although they both deserved punishment. Buck did not approach Spitz without growling and barking threateningly; in fact, Buck was behaving like a bully.

And considering that there is no longer a clear leader for the pack, the disputes between the dogs increased, and sometimes the sounds of barking and growling filled the camp. Dave and Solix were the only two that remained in their condition as they were before Bak began to stir the problems, but the noise angered the two old dogs. Francois felt angrier and more frustrated than them; as he could no longer control the dogs. Just as soon as he turned his back on them, they began to fight again. And sometimes Bak helped him to control the other dogs, despite the fact that Francois knew that Bak was the cause of all the troubles, but Bak was smarter than to let Francois catch him red-handed in this crime. Bak was working diligently on dragging the sled, and it became enjoyable for him, but he was enjoying more in stirring up the disputes between the dogs and complicating all the matters.

And in one of the nights after dinner, at the mouth of the Tahkina river, a beast chased a rabbit from the snow rabbits but he could not catch it, and in a moment the whole pack was chasing the rabbit with him. And at a distance of one hundred yards, there was a camp for the Northwest police with fifty dogs of their special huskies that all joined in the chase. The rabbit ran along the river, led by a dog, the pack consisting of sixty dogs, but he could not catch the rabbit. The dog felt as if he were a professional hunter, and he loved this feeling, and he felt vitality flowing into his veins like he had never felt before.

But Spitz — who was vicious even in the chases — left the pack and took a shortcut through the forest. Bak did not know that, and while he veered off and the rabbit was still in front of him, he saw another body descending from a nearby hill. It was Spitz, but the rabbit managed to escape from his side because Spitz's true target was Bak.

Bak knew immediately that this was the moment of the expected battle. The matter had begun entirely familiar to Bak as they circled around each other growling and their ears lying back waiting for an opportunity to pounce. Everything was still in the moonlight, and the snow covered the forest and the land. Nothing moved. The breaths of the two dogs were rising slowly in the cold air, and the other dogs stood in a circle surrounding them, and the silence had settled upon it. The other glimmered their eyes and the sound of its breath rose. The matter was neither new nor strange to Bak, but he felt it was supposed to be in this battle.

Spitz was a smart fighter, as he had experience; starting from Spitzbergen (where he was born) and across the northern pole and Canada and the desolate lands, he had succeeded in maintaining his position and keeping control in front of every dog he encountered, defeating them all.

Bach tried to bite Spitz but could not catch him; Spitz repelled him every time, and when Bach tried to pounce on Spitz more than once, he also tried to push him with his shoulder and throw him to the ground. But every time Bach attempted that, Spitz jumped away gracefully and bit Bach as he passed.

The fight was becoming more violent, and the other dogs were waiting to jump on the dog that would fall first. Buck started to feel tired, and Spitz began to rush toward him. At one time, Buck was almost about to fall, and the circle that consisted of sixty approaching dogs moved near him, but he quickly sprang back to his feet, and the other dogs returned to sitting and waiting for what would happen.

There was a dog that enjoyed a feature that distinguished him from others; and that was the ability to imagine. He fought with his instinct, but he could fight with his mind as well. He rushed forward, as if he was going to try using the shoulder trick that had failed before, but at the last moment he bent down and approached Spitz, grabbing his front legs with his teeth and was about to throw him to the ground. And Spitz was struggling to keep up with him, and he saw a silent circle of dogs and shining eyes approaching him in the same way that he had seen similar circles closing on other dogs previously. But this time he was the dog that was hit.

Bak did not stop, for he had prepared for the last assault, and the dogs had approached intensely until he could feel their breath on his back and could see them behind Spitz on both sides, ready to jump on him and watching him. Every animal among them froze in place as if it had turned to stone. Only Spitz was trembling and shivering as he stood wobbling on his wounded legs. Then Bak jumped on him and finally delivered a blow to the shoulder that knocked Spitz down and threw him to the ground. The other dogs jumped on him in turn, barking loudly and biting Spitz until he had to run far away in the snow into the heart of darkness. Bak stood and watched him as he fled; he had become the champion, the strongest dog; he had defeated his opponent, and felt that this gave him a wonderful feeling.

Did I not say to you that Bak is cleverer than Spitz? Thus said Francois in the next morning when he found Spitz missing and saw wounds on Bak from the traces of the fight. So he took Bak close to the fire and pointed to his wounds on the light emanating from it.

Francois had indeed made his decision, but when he turned his back, he expelled Solix again from the leader's place, and Solix was eager to abandon this place, and Francois became furious.

Francois shouted: 'I will discipline you' and headed towards the kid holding a rope in his hand.

Bak remembered the man with the red cloak and retreated slowly. He did not attempt to insert himself when Francois Solex placed him in the leader's position. Bak turned to be far from Francois' reach and started growling, and his eyes were watching the rope as it moved in a circular motion until he could avoid it if Francois used it; indeed, Bak had become wise regarding the ropes. Francois continued his work and called out to Bak when he was ready to place him in his old place in front of Dave. Bak retreated two or three steps, so Francois followed him, and Bak retreated again, and after several attempts, Francois threw the rope to prove to Bak that he would not use it, but Bak did not intend to return to his old place. Indeed, he wanted to be the leader, for he deserved that, and no other position would make him happy.

Bero joined Franswa to help him, and both continued running here and there for approximately an hour, throwing ropes towards Bak, but he evades it and they shout at him, barking at their faces, and he is keen to stay far from their hands. Bak did not try to escape, but he was retreating and turning in the premises of the camp to show them that when they give him what he wants, he will return and behave well.

Dave and Solix did not resist the change that occurred on the leadership site, so it did not concern them. All they wanted was serious work. As long as no one disturbed their work, they did not care about what happens. Except that the rest of the team had become outside of control, and even they were amazed by the speed of their return to the system.

That part of the Yukon River, which extends for thirty miles, was covered with ice at that time, and on one day, the team cut the same distance that it had taken them ten days to cover on the outbound journey. And on one trip, they covered sixty miles from Lake Lobarge to the slopes of Whitehorse. And they ran with immense speed across the lakes Marsh, Tagish, and Bennett, so that the man whose turn was to run beside the sled had to hold a tied rope in the sled. And on the last night of the second week, they reached the area of the White Pass, and could see the lights of the town of Skagway from a distance.
