Napoleon declared that Snowball's movements must be subjected to a strict investigation, so he began to search the buildings of the farm carefully, surrounded by his dogs, while the other animals followed him at a respectful distance due to his status. He sometimes stopped to smell the ground, claiming that he was capable, by means of the smell, of detecting Snowball's traces. He didn't leave a place in the barn, the stable, the hen coop, or the vegetable field without putting his nose in it, to convince the animals that he was tracing the traitor. He smelled the ground several times with his snout and then shouted in a terrifying voice: 'Snowball. He has passed here, my sense of smell tells me that.' As soon as I heard the name 'Snowball', the dogs showed their fangs and let out barking that shattered hearts.

Terror possessed all the animals as if Snowball, this fierce, constant loiterer, was threatening them with many dangers.

One night, Squealer called them all. He seemed to have signs of concern on his face and was trembling in his place, and said to them that he was bringing them very serious news.

Oh comrades! he shouted, trembling nervously. 'Snowball has sold himself to Frederick, the owner of Pinchfield Farm, who is now plotting a conspiracy to attack us and seize our farm. And he will be Snowball's guide during the attack. But there is something worse. We believed that Snowball's rebellion was driven by revenge and personal ambition. We were wrong, oh comrades! Do you know what they are?
