وَكانْAnd it wasذَلِكَthatالْفَرْعُthe branchبِالْقِياسِby comparisonإِلَيْهِماto themكَأَنَّهُas if it isجِذْعُthe trunkشَجَرَةٍof a treeكَبيرَةٍ!big!

And it was that the branch — in comparison to them — is as if it is the trunk of a big tree!

وَandكانَتِwereالْحاطِبَتانِthe two workersتَبْذُلانِexertingأَقْصَىutmostجُهْدَيْهِماof their effortsلِتَجُرَّاهُ،to drag him,حَتَّىuntilضَعُفَتْthey weakenedقُواهُما،their strength,وَandتَعَذَّرَit became difficultعَلَيْهِماfor themأَنْtoتَتَقَدَّماadvanceبِهِwith itخُطْوَةًa stepواحِدَةًoneإِلَىtowardsالأَمامِ.the front.

And the two workers were exerting their utmost efforts to drag him, until they weakened their strength, and it became difficult for them to advance with it a single step towards the front.

وَلاand notعَجَبَstrangeفِيinذَلِكَ،that,فَقَدْfor indeedكانَwasعَلَىonصِغَرِهِhis smallnessثَقِيلًا،heavy,وَكانَتِand it wasالأَرْضُthe earthالَّتيِthat whichتَدِبَّانِyou two are creepingعَلَيْهَاon itصَخْرِيَّةً.rocky.

And it is not strange in that, for indeed it was — despite its smallness — heavy, and the earth — on which you two are creeping — was rocky.

فَلَمَّاso whenرَأَتْهُماshe saw them«أُمُّ'Um ofمازِنٍ»Mazin'عَرَفَتْهُما،recognized them,وَأَدْرَكَتْand recognizedماwhatتُعانِيانِyou are sufferingمَنْfrom whomجَهْدٍ،hardship,فَتَقَدَّمَتْso she advancedإِلَيْهِما،to them,قائِلَةً:saying:«كَيْفَHowأَنْتُما؟are you both?هَلُمَّاcome onنَتَعاوَنُlet's cooperateعَلَىonجَرِّpullingهَذاthisالْحِمْلِloadالثَّقِيلِ!»heavy!'

So when 'Um of Mazin saw them, she recognized them, and understood what you are suffering from hardship, so she advanced to them, saying: 'How are you both? Come on, let's cooperate on pulling this heavy load!'

وَلَمْAnd did notتُضِعْput«أُمُّ مازِنٍ»'Um of Mazinوَقْتَهاher timeعَبَثًا،in vain,بَلِbutانْضَمَّتْshe joinedإِلَىtoالْحاطِبَتَيْنِ،the two weavers,وَعَاوَنَتْand assistedرَفَيقَتَيْهَاher companionsعَلَىonجَرِّpullingالْفَرْعِ،the branch,حَتَّىuntilبَلَغْنَthey reachedبِهِwith it,ذِرْوَةَthe peakالتَّلَّةِof the hillالصَّغِيرَةِsmallالْعالِيَةِ.high.

'Um of Mazin did not waste her time in vain, but she joined the two weavers and assisted her companions in pulling the branch, until they reached the peak of the small high hill.

ثُمَّThenقالتsaidأمMotherمازنMazinلtoرفيقتيهاher friendsلقدindeedأديتI have performedواجبيmy dutyياOرفيقتيmy friendفوداعًاfarewellوإلىand toاللقاءthe meetingالقريبsoon

Then, 'Mother Mazin' said to her friends: 'Indeed, I have performed my duty — O my friends — so farewell, and until we meet soon!'

فَشَكَرَتاThen they thankedلَهاherماfor whatبَذَلَتْshe exertedفيinمُساعَدَتِهِماtheir assistanceمِنْfromجَهْدٍeffortsوَandعَناءٍhardship

Then they thanked her for what she exerted in their assistance from efforts and hardship.

الْمَطَرُthe rain

The rain

ثُمَّThenسارَتْshe walked«أُمُّmother ofمازِنٍ»Mazinفيinطَرِيقِها،her path,حَتَّىuntilلَقِيَتْshe encounteredجَمْهَرَةًa gatheringمِنَofالنَّمْلِ،the ants,جادَّةًdiligentlyفيinالسَّيْرِ.the journey.

Then 'Mother of Mazin' walked on her path until she encountered a gathering of ants, diligently on the way.

وَرَأَتْAnd sawإِحْداهاone of themتَحْمِلُis carryingوَلَدَهاher childالصَّغِيرَthe smallوَقَدِand indeedاحْتَضَنَتْهُheld himفيinثَوْبِهاher garmentالشَّفَّافِthe transparentوَرَأَتْAnd sawجَماعَةًa groupأُخْرَىanotherتَحْمِلُis carryingأَعْوادًاsticksصَغِيرَةًsmallفيinمِثْلِlikeأَحْجَامِsizesالإِبَرِthe needlesمِنْfromشَجَرِthe treesالشُّوْحِthe juniperوَبَقاياand remnantsوَرَقِleavesالأَشْجارِthe treesالأُخْرَى.other.

And one of them saw her carrying her small child, and she had held him in her transparent garment. And she saw another group carrying small sticks — like the size of needles — from the juniper trees, and remnants of the leaves of other trees.

وَإِنَّهاAnd indeed it

And indeed it is moving along its path - peacefully, with a tranquil soul - when it heard a roar echoing in the void, it jumped startled and frightened.

وَلَمْAnd notتَدْرِYou knowمَصْدَرَsourceتِلْكِthatالْجَلْجَلَةِrumbleالرَّاعِدَةِ،thundering,لَأَنَّهاbecause itلَمْdid notتَسْمَعْhearصَوْتَthe soundالرَّعْدِ،of thunder,قَبْلَbeforeالْيَوْمِ.today.

And you did not know the source of that thundering rumble, because it had not heard the sound of thunder before today.

وَذُعِرَتْAnd she was frightenedرَفِيقاتُهاher companionsالنِّمالُthe antsالَّتِيthatكانْتَwereتَسْعَىwalkingبَيْنَbetweenالْحَشائِشِthe grassesوَأَسْرَعَتْAnd she hurriedإِلَىtoقَرْيَتِهاher villageعائِدَةًreturningحِينَwhenسَمِعْتَyou heardقَصْفَthe thunderingالرُّعُودِof the thunderالْمُدَوِّيَةِwhich trembles

And she was frightened by her companions, the ants, that were walking between the grasses... And she hurried to her village returning when you heard the thundering of the thunder.

أَمَّاAs forصاحِبَتُناour companion«أُمُّ مازِنٍ»‘Umm Mazin’فَقَدْso indeedسَرَتِtook holdالرِّعْدَةُthe tremorفيinجِسْمِها،her body,مِنْfromفَرْطِextremeالْخَوْفِ،fear,وَأَسْرَعَتِand hastenedفِيinجَرْيهاher runningصَوْبَtowardsالْبَيْتِ.the house.

As for our companion ‘Umm Mazin’, she was overtaken by a tremor in her body, from extreme fear, and she hastened in her running towards the house.

وَلَكِنَّهاBut sheلَمْdid notتَكَدْalmostتُكْمِلُcompleteعَشْرَtenخُطُواتٍ،steps,حَتَّىuntilأَحَسَّتْshe feltكَأَنَّas ifهِراوَةًa heavy hammerضَخْمَةًhugeهَوَتْfellعَلَىonرَأَسِهاher headبِضَرْبَةٍwith a blowقاتِلَةٍ.deadly.فَصَرَخَتْThen she screamedمِنْfromفَرْطِexcessالأَلَمِpainوالْخَوْفِ،and fear,وَهِيَand sheتَتَدَحْرَجُwas rollingعَلَىonالأَرْضِ:the ground:«آهٍ!Oh!لَقَدْI haveتَحَطَّمْتَ،crashed,ياOرَأَسِيَmy head!الْمِسْكِينَ!»the poor!

But she did not almost complete ten steps, until she felt as if a huge hammer fell on her head with a deadly blow. Then she screamed from excess pain and fear, while she was rolling on the ground: 'Oh! I have crashed, O my head, the poor!'

وَلَمْAnd notتَكُنْbeهَذِهِthisالضَّرْبَةُstrikeالقاتلةُfatalالَّتِيthatكادَتْalmostتُذْهِلُdaze«أُمَّMotherمازِنٍ»Mazinإِلَّاexceptنُقْطَةًa pointكَبِيرَةًgreatمِنَofالْمَطَرِthe rain

And this fatal strike that almost dazed 'Mother Mazin' was nothing but a great point of rain.

ثُمَّThenتَبِعَتْهاfollowed itنُقْطَةٌpointأُخْرَىanotherفَوْقَaboveظَهْرِهاits backثُمَّThenثالِثَةٌthirdثُمَّThenتَوالَتْcontinuedقَطَراتُthe dropsالْمَطَرِof rainفاشْتَدَّand intensifiedجَزَعُthe panic«أُمِّUmمازِنٍ»Mazinوَandأَيْقَنَتْshe knewبِالْهَلاكِ.about destruction.وَصاحَتْand she screamedمَغَوِّثَةًin distressتَطْلُبُseekingالنَّجْدَةَ،help,وَقَدْandتَمَلَّكَهاshe was overwhelmedالذُّعْرُ:by terror:«أَغِيثُونِي!Help me!أَدْرِكُونِي!Rescue me!النَّجْدَةَhelpياOرَفِيقاتِي،my companions,فَإِنَّfor surelyأَعْدائِيmy enemiesتَأْتَمِرُare conspiringبِيagainst meلِتَقْتُلَنِي!to kill me!

Then another point followed it above its back. Then a third, then the raindrops continued. The panic of 'Um Mazin' intensified, and she knew about destruction. And she screamed in distress seeking help, and she was overwhelmed by terror: 'Help me! Rescue me! Help, O my companions, for surely my enemies are conspiring against me to kill me!'

فَلَمْBut notيَسَمَعْhe hearsصِياحَهاher shoutingأَحَدٌanyoneوَذَهَبَand wentصُراخُهُاher screamingأَدْراجَ الرِّياحِto the winds

But no one heard her shouting, and her scream went away with the winds.

فَأَسْرَعَتْSo she hurriedفيinجَرْيهاher runningيَمْنَةًto the rightوَيَسْرَةًand to the leftوَهِيَand sheلا تَدْرِيdoes not knowإِلَىtoأَيْنَwhereتَقْصِدُshe intendsوَقَدْand indeedغَمَرَhas floodedالْمَطَرُthe rainكُلَّeveryمَكانٍplaceوالْتَصَقَتْand stuckأَرْجُلُهاher legsبِجِسْمِهاto her bodyالصَّغِيرِsmall

So she hurried in her running to the right and to the left, and she did not know where she intended to go, and the rain had flooded every place, and her legs stuck to her small body.

وَلَكِنَّهاBut sheرَأَتْsawلِحُسْنِfor the beauty ofحَظِّهاher luckحَقْلًاa fieldعَلَىonقِيْدِthe length of(مَسافَةِ)(the distance)خُطُواتٍof stepsمِنْها.from her.

But she saw — for the beauty of her luck — a field on the length of (the distance) of steps from her.

وَلاحَتْAnd it appearedأَمامَهاbefore herسَنابِلُthe earsالْقَمْحِof wheatالذَّهَبِيَّةُgoldenفُخُيِّلَit fanciedإِلَيْهاto herأَنَّهُthat itغابَةٌis a forestفَأَسْرَعَتْSo she hurriedإِلَىtoالْحَقْلِthe fieldلِتَأْمَنَto secureغائِلَةَthe furyالْمَطَرِof the rain

And it appeared before her the golden ears of wheat, she fancied that it was a forest. So she hurried to the field, to secure herself from the fury of the rain.

بَيْنَbetweenسَنَابِلِears (of wheat)الْقَمْحِwheat

Between the ears of wheat

وَمَشَتْAnd she walked«أُمُّ مازِنٍ»Mother of Mazinبَيْنَbetweenسَنابِلِthe ears of cornالْقَمْحِ،the wheat,تَبْحَثُsearchingعَنْforمَكانٍa placeجافٍّ،dry,ثُمَّthenوَقَفَتْshe stoppedتَسْتَرِقُlistening in secrecy,السَّمْعَ،the hearing,وَتَقُولُand she saysفِيinنَفْسِها:herself:«تُرَى«I wonderهَلْifبَلَغْتُI have reachedالْمَأْمَنَ؟the safe place?تُرَىI wonderهَلْifيُفاجِئُنِيsomeone surprises meأَحَدٌanyoneمِنْfromأَعْدائِيmy enemiesفِيinهَذاthisالْمَكانِ؟place?تُرَىI wonderماذاWhatتُخْبَؤُهُis hidden by itالسَّنابِلُthe earsالْعالِيَةُhighمِنْofمُفَاجئاتٍ؟surprises?ماWhatأَظُنُّI thinkأَحَدًاanyoneفِيها،in it.فَإِنِّيFor Iلاdo notأَسْمَعُhearحَرَكَةًmovementلِكائِنٍof a beingكانَ.was.

And 'Um Mazin' walked among the ears of wheat, searching for a dry place, then she stopped to listen carefully, and thought to herself: 'I wonder if I have reached the safe place? I wonder if anyone from my enemies will surprise me in this place? I wonder what surprises the high ears conceal? I do not think anyone is in them, for I do not hear any movement of a being.'

فَلأَبْقَSo I may stayوَحِيدَةًaloneفِيinهَذاthisالْحَقْلِfieldالأَمِينِ.trustworthy.

So I may stay alone in this trustworthy field.

وَلَكِنَّهاbut sheشَعَرَتْfeltبِالْبَرْدِthe coldيَسْرِيflowingفِيinجِسْمِهاher bodyفاشْتَدَّthus intensifiedنَدَمُهاher regretعَلَىaboutخُرُوجِهاher going outفِيonذَلِكَthatالْيَوْمِdayوَضاعَفَand doubledحُزْنَهاher sadnessأَنَّهاthat sheبَعُدَتْhad been awayعَنْfromبَيْتِها،her home,وَتَعَذَّرَتْand it became impossibleعَوْدَتُهاher returnإِلَيْهِ.to it.

But she felt the cold flowing in her body. Thus, her regret intensified about her going out on that day, and her sadness doubled because she was away from her home, and her return to it became impossible.

وَقالَتْAnd she saidتُناجِيwhispering toنَفْسَها،herself,وَتَلُومُهُاand blaming herعَلَىforمُخاطَرَتِهِا:her recklessness:«لا"Noشَكَّdoubtأَنَّthatأَخَواتِيmy sistersسَيَتالَّمْنَ،will worry,وَيَقْلَقُand their hearts will be anxiousبالُهُنَّabout their absence…وَلَكِنْButماذاwhatأَرَى؟do I see?إِنِّيIndeed, Iلَأَلْمَحُcan seeأَشْبَهَsomething resemblingشَيْءٍthingبِالسَّطْحِon the surfaceفَوْقَaboveهَذِهِtheseالسَّنَابِلِears of corn…مَرْحَىHoorayفَقَدْfor I haveوَجَدْتُfoundبُغْيَتِي،what I seek,فَلأَتَسَلَّقْso let me climbهَذِهِthisالسَّاقَlong stalk,الطَّوِيلَةَ،the tall,لأُصْبِحَto make myselfآمِنَةًsafeمِنْfromكُلِّeveryخَطَرٍ.danger.

And she said, whispering to herself, and blaming her for her recklessness: "No doubt my sisters will worry, and their hearts will be anxious about their absence… But what do I see? Indeed, I can see something resembling the surface above these ears of corn… Hooray, for I have found what I seek, so let me climb this long stalk, to make myself safe from every danger."

وَلَكِنَّهاBut sheلَمْdid notتَكَدْalmostتَفْعَلُdoحَتَّىuntilسَمِعَتْshe heardصَوْتًاa soundراعِبًاterrifyingيَصِيحُshoutingقائِلًا:saying:«مَنِWhoالقادِمُ؟»is coming?"

But she did not almost do it, until she heard a terrifying sound, shouting saying: "Who is coming?"
