نَهَضَstood upالرِّجَالُthe menمِنْfromعَلَىonالْأَرْضِthe ground
The men stood up from the ground.
وَبَسَطُواand spread outأَيَادِيَهُمْtheir handsفَوْقَaboveرُءُوسِهِمْtheir heads
and spread their hands above their heads.
سَبَّcursedأَحَدُone ofالْجُنُودِthe soldiers
One of the soldiers cursed
وَهُوَwhile heيَفْرُكُrubbingعَيْنَيْهِhis eyes
while rubbing his eyes,
وَتَذَمَّرَand complainedالْجَمِيعُeveryone
and everyone complained.
كَانَwasاعْتِرَاضُهُمْtheir objectionعَلَىtoتِلْكَthoseالأَوَامِرِorders
Their objection to those orders
كَاعْتِرَاضِهِمْlike their objectionعَلَىtoالدُّخُولِthe enteringفِيintoمَعْرَكَةٍa battleجَدِيدَةٍnew
was like their objection to entering a new battle;
إِذْasكَانُواthey wereيَشْعُرُونَfeelingبِالرَّاحَةِat easeفِيinهَذَاthisالْمَكَانِplace
as they were feeling at ease in this place.
سَارَwalkedالرِّجَالُthe menرُوَيْدًاslowlyرُوَيْدًاslowly
The men walked slowly slowly
عَبْرَacrossالْحَقْلِthe fieldفِيonطَرِيقِthe wayالْعَوْدَةِof return
across the field on the way back,
بَعْدَafterأَنْthatكَانُواthey wereيَعْدُونَrunningفِيهِin itبِجُنُونٍmadlyقَبْلَbeforeقَلِيلٍa little
after they had been running in it madly a little while ago.
اسْتَمَرَّتِcontinuedالكَتِيبَةُthe battalionفِيinالسَّيْرِthe march
The battalion continued the march
حَتَّىuntilانْضَمَّتْit joinedإِلَىtoبَقِيَّةِthe rest ofالْجَيْشِthe army
until it joined the rest of the army,
وَأُعِيدَand was reorganizedتَشْكِيلُthe formation ofالكَتَائِبِthe battalionsفِيinصُفُوفٍrows
and the formations of the battalions were reorganized in rows,
وَوَاصَلُواand they continuedمَسِيرَتَهُمْtheir marchفِيinالْغَابَةِthe forest
and they continued their march in the forest.
شَاهَدُواThey sawفِيinطَرِيقِهِمْtheir wayبَيْتًاa houseأَبْيَضَwhite
They saw a white house in their path,
أَمَامَهُin front of itمَجْمُوعَاتٌgroupsمِنْهُمْof themيُطْلِقُونَfiringالنَّارَthe fireعَلَىatعَدُوٍّan enemyبَعِيدٍdistant
in front of it groups of them firing at a distant enemy.
عِنْدَAtهَذِهِthisالنُّقْطَةِpoint
At this point,
انْعَطَفَturnedالْجُنُودُthe soldiersمِنْfromطَرِيقِthe way ofالْحَقْلِthe field
the soldiers turned from the way of the field
وَتَحَرَّكُواand movedفِيinاتِّجَاهِthe direction ofالنَّهْرِthe river
and moved in the direction of the river.
وَعِنْدَمَاAnd whenانْتَبَهَnoticedهِنْرِيHenryإِلَىtoالْمَكَانِthe placeالَّذِيthatكَانُواthey wereيَقْصِدُونَهُheading for it
And when Henry noticed the place that they were heading for,
نَظَرَhe lookedخَلْفَهُbehind him
he looked behind him
وَأَخَذَand tookنَفَسًاa breathعَمِيقًاdeepمَمْزُوجًاmixedبِالرِّضَىwith satisfaction
and took a deep breath mixed with satisfaction,
ثُمَّthenوَكَزَhe nudgedصَدِيقَهُhis friendوِيلْسُونَWilson
then he nudged his friend Wilson
وَقَالَand said
and said,
نَحْنُWeنُغَادِرُare leavingسَاحَةَthe battlefield
"We are leaving the battlefield!
لَقَدِIndeedانْتَهَتِhas endedالْحَرْبُthe war
Indeed, the war has ended!"
نَظَرَlookedوِيلْسُونُWilsonخَلْفَهُbehind himهُوَhimselfالْآخَرُthe other
Wilson himself looked behind him
وَقَالَand saidفِيinدَهْشَةٍastonishment
and said in astonishment:
نَعَمْYesلَقَدِindeedانْتَهَتْit has ended
"Yes, it has ended!"
قَضَىspentهِنْرِيHenryبَعْضَsomeالْوَقْتِtimeلِيَتَكَيَّفَto adaptمَعَtoهَذَاthisالتَّغْيِيرِchange
Henry spent some time to adapt to this change.
صَفَاbecame clearذِهْنُهُhis mindتَدْرِيجِيًّاgradually
His mind gradually became clear,
وَبَدَأَand he beganيَسْتَوْعِبُto comprehendأَيْنَwhereكَانَhe wasوَمَاذَاand whatيَحْدُثُis happening
and he began to comprehend where he was and what was happening.
فَهِمَHe understoodأَنَّthatالْحَرْبَthe warقَدِhasانْتَهَتْended
He understood that the war had ended,
وَأَنَّهُand that heكَانَwasفِيinأَرْضٍa landتَمْلَؤُهَاfilled withمَعَارِكُbattlesغَرِيبَةٌstrange
and that he had been in a land filled with strange battles,
وَأَنَّهُand that heقَدْhadعَادَreturned
and that he had returned.
أَدْرَكَHe realizedأَنَّهُthat heكَانَwasفِيinمَكَانٍa placeمَلِيءٍfull ofبِالدِّمَاءِblood
He realized that he was in a place full of blood
وَمَشْحُونٍand filledبِمَشَاعِرِwith feelings ofالْغَضَبِanger
and filled with feelings of anger,
وَأَنَّهُand that heنَجَاsurvived
and that he had survived.
أَوَّلُThe firstشَيْءٍthingخَطَرَcameفِيtoبَالِهِhis mind
The first thing that came to his mind
هُوَwasأَنْtoيَحْتَفِلَcelebrate
was to celebrate.
لَاحِقًاLaterبَدَأَbeganهِنْرِيHenryيَتَمَعَّنُto contemplateفِيinتَصَرُّفَاتِهِhis behaviors
Later, Henry began to contemplate his behaviors
مِنَfromالْإِخْفَاقَاتِthe failuresوَالْإِنْجَازَاتِand the successes
from the failures and the successes.
شَعَرَHe feltبِالسَّعَادَةِhappiness
He felt happiness
وَلَمْand did notيَنْدَمْregretعَلَىanythingشَيْءٍat all
and did not regret anything.
لَمْdid notيُشَاهِدْهُsee himالْآخَرُونَothers
Others did not see him
إِلَّاexceptفِيinالْمَوَاقِفِsituationsالنَّبِيلَةِnoble

كَانَHe wasسَعِيدًاhappyبِتَذَكُّرِrememberingهَذِهِtheseالْأَشْيَاءِthings
He was happy remembering these things
وَظَلَّand remainedوَقْتًاfor a timeطَوِيلًاlong
and remained for a long time
يَسْتَرْجِعُهَاretrieving themفِيinخَيَالِهِhis imagination
retrieving them in his imagination.
كَانَHe wasيَرَىseeingنَفْسَهُhimselfجُنْدِيًّاas a soldierكُفْئًاcapable
He saw himself as a capable soldier,
وَتَذَكَّرَand rememberedفِيinسَعَادَةٍhappinessتَعْلِيقَاتِthe comments ofرِفَاقِهِhis companionsعَنْaboutمَدَىthe extent ofشَجَاعَتِهِhis bravery
and remembered in happiness the comments of his companions about the extent of his bravery.
لَكِنْButعَاوَدَهُreturned to himشَبَحُthe specter ofهُرُوبِهِhis escapeمِنَfromالْمَعْرَكَةِthe battlefieldالْأُولَىfirst
But the specter of his escape from the first battlefield returned to him.
كَانَHe wasسَاخِطًاangryإِلَىtoحَدٍّa degreeمَاsomewhat
He was somewhat angry
بِشَأْنِaboutمَاwhatحَدَثَhappened
about what happened.
وَلِلَحْظَةٍAnd for a momentانْتَابَهُhe was overcome byشُعُورٌa feelingبِالْخَجَلِof shameوَالْخِزْيِand disgrace
And for a moment he was overcome by a feeling of shame and disgrace.
ثُمَّThenعَاوَدَتْهُreturned to himذِكْرَىthe memory ofالْجُنْدِيِّthe soldierذِيpossessingالثِّيَابِthe clothesالرَّثَّةِtattered
Then he recalled the memory of the soldier with tattered clothes
الَّذِيwhoفَرَّfledمِنْهُfrom himفِيinالْحَقْلِthe field
who fled from him in the field.
وَلِلَحْظَةٍAnd for a momentأَخَذَhe beganيَتَصَبَّبُsweatingعَرَقًاsweat
And for a moment, he began sweating
عِنْدَمَاwhenفَكَّرَhe thoughtأَنَّthatالْآخَرِينَthe othersقَدْmayيَعْرِفُونَknowمَاwhatفَعَلَhe did
when he thought that the others may know what he did,
فَأَطْلَقَso he let outصَرْخَةَa scream ofأَلَمٍpain
so he let out a scream of pain.
الْتَفَتَturnedإِلَيْهِto himوِيلْسُونُWilson
Wilson turned to him
وَسَأَلَهُand asked him
and asked him:
مَاذَاWhatبِكَis wrong with youيَاOهِنْرِيHenry
"What is wrong with you, O Henry?"
لَمْdid notيَسْتَطِعْbe ableهِنْرِيHenryالرَّدَّto replyعَلَىtoصَدِيقِهِhis friend
Henry could not reply to his friend,
وَغَمْغَمَand mumbledلِنَفْسِهِto himselfبِكَلِمَاتٍwith wordsغَيْرِunوَاضِحَةٍclear
and mumbled to himself with unclear words.
