لَمْdid notيَكُنْwantيُرِيدُtoأَنْbeيُطَارَدَchasedبَعْدَafterالْآنَnow

He did not want to be chased any longer now.

انْحَنَىHe bentخَلْفَbehindشَجَرَةٍa treeصَغِيرَةٍsmall

He bent behind a small tree

وَandصَرَّgrittedعَلَىonأَسْنَانِهِhis teeth

and gritted his teeth.

لَاnotتَزَالُstillالْعِصَابَةُthe headbandمَرْبُوطَةًtiedحَوْلَaroundرَأْسِهِhis head

The headband was still tied around his head,

وَandبِهَاon itبُقْعَةٌa spotصَغِيرَةٌsmallمِنَofالدِّمَاءِblood

with a small spot of blood on it.

كَانَWasشَعْرُهُhis hairأَشْعَثَdisheveled

His hair was disheveled,

يَتَدَلَّىhanging downفَوْقَoverالْعِصَابَةِthe headband

hanging over the headband

مُغَطِّيًاcoveringجَبِينَهُhis forehead

covering his forehead.

وَAndكَانَتْwereأَزْرَارُbuttonsسُتْرَتِهِhis jacketوَandقَمِيصِهِshirtمَفْتُوحَةًopenعِنْدَatالْعُنُقِthe neck

The buttons of his jacket and shirt were open at the neck,

وَandأَصَابِعُهُhis fingersمُلْتَفَّةًwrappedفِيinتَوَتُّرٍtensionحَوْلَaroundبُنْدُقِيَّتِهِhis rifle

and his fingers were wrapped in tension around his rifle.

شَعَرَHe feltأَنَّthatالْعَدُوَّthe enemyيُهِينُهُwas humiliating him

He felt that the enemy was humiliating him

هُوَhimوَandأَصْدِقَاءَهُhis friends

and his friends.

كَانُواThey wereيُعَامَلُونَbeing treatedوَكَأَنَّهُمْas if they wereضِعَافٌweakأَذِلَّاءُhumiliated

They were treated as if they were weak and humiliated,

وَأَرَادَand he wantedأَنْtoيَثْأَرَavengeلِذَلِكَfor that

and he wanted to take revenge for that.

أَرَادَHe wantedأَنْtoيَهْزِمَهُمْdefeat them

He wanted to defeat them.

انْطَلَقَتْRang outأَمَامَهُمْin front of themإِحْدَىoneالطَّلَقَاتِof the shotsالنَّارِيَّةِfire

One of the gunshots rang out in front of them,

وَعَلَىand onالْفَوْرِthe spotتَبِعَتْهَاfollowed itطَلَقَاتٌshotsأُخْرَىother

and immediately followed by other shots.

وَبَعْدَAnd afterقَلِيلٍa little

And after a little while,

بَدَأَتْbeganكَتِيبَتُهُhis brigadeتُطْلِقُto openالنِّيرَانَfire

his brigade began to open fire.

اسْتَقَرَّSettledحَاجِزٌbarrierكَثِيفٌthickمِنَofالدُّخَانِsmoke

A thick barrier of smoke settled.

كَانَWasهُنْرِيHenryيُحَارِبُfightingبِبَسَالَةٍbravely

Henry was fighting bravely,

بَلْnayإِنَّهُheلَمْdid notيَعِيrealizeأَنَّهُthat heوَاقِفٌwas standing

in fact, he did not even realize that he was standing.

وَحِينَمَاAnd whenفَقَدَhe lostتَوَازُنَهُhis balance

And when he lost his balance

وَسَقَطَand fellأَرْضًاto the ground

and fell to the ground,

هَبَّhe sprangوَاقِفًاstandingعَلَىonالْفَوْرِthe spot

he sprang back to his feet immediately.

ارْتَفَعَتْRoseحَرَارَةُthe heatأُسْطُوَانَةِof the barrelبُنْدُقِيَّتِهِof his rifle

The heat of his rifle barrel rose

حَتَّىuntilإِنَّهُheلَمْcould notيَكُنْbe ableلِيَتَحَمَّلَهَاto bear it

until he could not have borne it

فِيinأَيِّanyيَوْمٍdayآخَرَother

on any other day,

لَكِنَّهُbut heاسْتَمَرَّcontinuedفِيinإِطْلَاقِfiringالنِّيرَانِfireالْيَوْمَtoday

but he continued firing today.

ظَلَّHe keptيُقَاتِلُfightingوَandيُطْلِقُfiringالنِّيرَانَfireمِنْfromبُنْدُقِيَّتِهِhis rifle

He kept fighting and firing from his rifle

حَتَّىuntilبَعْدَafterتَوَقُّفِthe stoppingالْجَمِيعِof everyone

until after everyone had stopped.

كَانَWasكُلُّallتَرْكِيزِهِhis focusمُنْصَبًّاdirectedعَلَىonالْقِتَالِthe battle

All his focus was directed on the battle

حَتَّىthatإِنَّهُheلَمْdid notيَلْحَظِnoticeالْهُدُوءَthe calmالَّذِيthatسَادَprevailedالْمَكَانَthe place

such that he did not notice the calm that prevailed in the place.

وَAndأَخِيرًاfinallyسَمِعَhe heardضَحِكَةًa laughعَالِيَةًloud

And finally, he heard a loud laugh

وَandصَوْتًاa voiceبَدَتْthat seemedعَلَيْهِto carryالدَّهْشَةُastonishment

and a voice that seemed full of astonishment.

صَاحَShoutedأَحَدُoneالْجُنُودِof the soldiers

One of the soldiers shouted:

أَيُّهَاOالْأَحْمَقُfool!أَلَمْDidتَتَعَلَّمْyou not learnأَنْtoتُوقِفَstopالضَّرْبَfiring

"O fool! Did you not learn to stop firing

عِنْدَمَاwhenلَاthere is notيَكُونُanyهُنَاكَthereمَاthingتُصَوِّبُyou aimتِجَاهَهُat it?"

when there is nothing to aim at?"

الْتَفَتَTurnedهُنْرِيHenryوَandنَظَرَlookedإِلَىatرِفَاقِهِhis comrades

Henry turned and looked at his comrades.

كَانُواThey wereجَمِيعًاallيُحَدِّقُونَgazingفِيهِat himفِيinدَهْشَةٍamazement

They were all gazing at him in amazement.

وَAndعِنْدَمَاwhenنَظَرَhe lookedإِلَىtoالْأَمَامِthe frontمَرَّةًonceأُخْرَىmore

And when he looked to the front once more,

رَأَىhe sawأَرْضًاgroundخَالِيَةًemptyيَعْلُوهَاcovered byالدُّخَانُsmoke

he saw an empty field covered by smoke.

بَدَاLookedعَلَيْهِupon himالِارْتِبَاكُconfusionلَحْظَةًfor a moment

He looked confused for a moment,

ثُمَّthenانْتَبَهَhe realizedإِلَىwhatمَاhe wasكَانَseeingيَرَىnow

then he realized what he was seeing.

قَالَSaidهُنْرِيHenryأُوهْOh.

Henry said, "Oh."

عَادَHe returnedإِلَىtoرِفَاقِهِhis comradesوَandأَلْقَىthrewبِوَزْنِهِhis weightأَرْضًاto the ground

He returned to his comrades and threw his weight to the ground.

كَانَWasالْمُلَازِمُthe lieutenantيَصِيحُshoutingفِيinحَمَاسٍfury

The lieutenant was shouting in fury,

وَandقَالَsaidلِهُنْرِيto Henry

and said to Henry:

لَوْ"IfكَانَI hadلَدَيَّwith meعَشَرَةُtenآلَافِthousandقِطٍّwildبَرِّيٍّcatsمِثْلِكَlike you,

"If I had ten thousand wild cats like you,

لَرَبِحْتُI would winهَذِهِthisالْحَرْبَwarفِيinأُسْبُوعٍoneوَاحِدٍweek."

I would win this war in one week."

غَمْغَمَMumbledبَعْضُsomeالْجُنُودِsoldiers

Some soldiers mumbled

وَandنَظَرُواlookedإِلَىatهُنْرِيHenryفِيinدَهْشَةٍastonishment.

and looked at Henry in astonishment.

تَقَدَّمَAdvancedوِلْسُونُWilsonنَحْوَهُtowards him

Wilson advanced towards him

وَandسَأَلَهُasked him

and asked him:

هَلْ"Areأَنْتَyouبِخَيْرٍwell,يَاOفْلِيمَنْجُFleming?

"Are you well, Fleming?

أَكُلُّIs everythingشَيْءٍokعَلَىasمَاitيُرَامُshould be?

Is everything as it should be?

أَلَمْDidيُصِبْكَnot anything badمَكْرُوهٌhappen to you?"

Did not anything bad happen to you?"

رَدَّRespondedهُنْرِيHenryفِيwithصُعُوبَةٍdifficulty:

Henry responded with difficulty:

كَلَّا"No."

"No."

أَدْرَكَRealizedهُنْرِيHenryأَنَّهُthat heكَانَhad beenيُحَارِبُfightingكَالْحَيَوَانِlike an animal

Henry realized that he had been fighting like an animal,

وَandأَنَّthatالْأَمْرَthe matterلَمْwasيَكُنْnotصَعْبًاdifficult

and that the matter was not difficult.

لَقَدْIndeedبَذَلَhe exertedجُهْدًاeffortلِيَتَغَلَّبَto overcomeعَلَىhisخَوْفِهِfear

Indeed, he had exerted effort to overcome his fear,

وَandالْآنَnowأَصْبَحَhe had becomeيَسْتَحِقُّworthy ofلَقَبَthe title ofالْبَطَلِthe hero

and now he had become worthy of the title of hero.

إِنَّهُIndeedحَتَّىevenلَمْdid notيُلَاحِظْnoticeحُدُوثَthe occurrence ofذَلِكَthat.

Indeed, he had not even noticed the occurrence of that.
