كَسَاcoveredضَبَابُfogالْمَسَاءِthe eveningالْأَزْرَقُblueالْحَقْلَthe field
The blue evening fog covered the field.
وَاكْتَسَتِand was adornedالْغَابَةُthe forestبِظِلَالٍwith shadowsقُرْمُزِيَّةٍcrimsonمُمْتَدَّةٍextended
and the forest was adorned with extended crimson shadows.
وَكَانَتْand there wasهُنَاكَthereسَحَابَةٌa cloudوَحِيدَةٌlonelyفِيinالسَّمَاءِthe sky
and there was a lonely cloud in the sky.
تَرَكَleftهُنْرِيHenryالْمَشْهَدَthe sceneوَرَاءَهُbehind him
Henry left the scene behind him.
وَمَاand no soonerإِنْdidفَعَلَhe do soحَتَّىuntilسَمِعَhe heardطَلَقَاتِshotsالْبَنَادِقِof the riflesتُدَوِّيechoingمُجَدَّدًاagainفَجْأَةًsuddenly
and as soon as he did, he heard rifle shots echoing suddenly again.

Chapter Fifteen
غَرِيبٌA strangerيُقَدِّمُoffersالْعَوْنَhelp
A stranger offers help.
تَسَارَعَتْquickenedخُطُوَاتُstepsهُنْرِيHenry'sعِنْدَatحُلُولِthe approach ofالْغَسَقِdusk
Henry's steps quickened as dusk approached.
بَعْدَafterفَتْرَةٍa whileلَمْdid notيَعُدْcontinueجُرْحُهُhis woundيُؤْلِمُهُto pain him
After a while, his wound no longer pained him.
فَكَّرَthoughtهُنْرِيHenryفِيofمَوْطِنِهِhis homelandأَثْنَاءَduringسَيْرِهِhis walk
Henry thought of his homeland during his walk.
وَأَخِيرًاand finallyبَلَغَreachedالْإِنْهَاكُexhaustionمِنْهُhimكُلَّeveryمَبْلَغٍextent
and finally exhaustion completely overcame him.
فَتَدَلَّىso droopedرَأْسُهُhis headإِلَىtoالْأَمَامِthe front
so his head drooped forward.
وَانْحَنَتْand bentكَتِفَاهُhis shouldersكَأَنَّهُas if heيَحْمِلُwas carryingحِمْلًاa burdenثَقِيلًاheavy
and his shoulders bent as if he were carrying a heavy burden.
وَأَصْبَحَand he beganيَجُرُّdraggingقَدَمَيْهِhis feetعَلَىonالْأَرْضِthe ground
and he began dragging his feet on the ground.
فِيinالنِّهَايَةِthe endسَمِعَhe heardصَوْتًاa voiceمُبْتَهِجًاjoyfulبِجِوَارِnearكَتِفِهِhis shoulderيَقُولُsaying
In the end, he heard a joyful voice near his shoulder saying:
تَبْدُوYou lookبِحَالَةٍin a stateسَيِّئَةٍbadلِلْغَايَةِvery muchأَلَيْسَis it notكَذَلِكَso
"You look in a very bad state, don't you think?"
لَمْdid notيَرْفَعْraiseهُنْرِيHenryبَصَرَهُhis gaze
Henry did not raise his gaze.
لَكِنَّهُbut heقَالَsaidبَلَىyes
but he said, "Yes."
أَمْسَكَgrabbedصَاحِبُthe owner ofالصَّوْتِthe voiceالْمُبْتَهِجِjoyfulبِذِرَاعِby the arm ofهُنْرِيHenryبِإِحْكَامٍfirmly
The owner of the joyful voice grabbed Henry firmly by the arm.
قَالَsaidالرَّجُلُthe manضَاحِكًاlaughing
The man said, laughing:
حَسَنًاWellأَنَاIذَاهِبٌam goingفِيinطَرِيقِكَyour direction
"Well, I am going your way.
الْمَجْمُوعَةُthe groupكُلُّهَاall of itذَاهِبَةٌis goingفِيinطَرِيقِكَyour direction
The whole group is going your way,
وَأَظُنُّand I thinkأَنَّthatبِاسْتِطَاعَتِنَاwe are able toتَوْصِيلَكَescort you
and I think that we can take you along."
أَثْنَاءَDuringسَيْرِهِمَاtheir walkسَأَلَaskedالرَّجُلُthe manهُنْرِيHenryعَمَّاabout whatرَآهُhe saw
During their walk, the man asked Henry about what he had seen,
وَأَخْبَرَهُand informed himبِمَاof whatيَعْرِفُهُhe knewعَنْaboutكَتِيبَةِthe battalion ofهُنْرِيHenry
and informed him of what he knew about Henry's battalion.
قَالَSaidالرَّجُلُthe man
The man said:
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyهُنَاكَare thereفِيinقَلْبِthe heart ofالْمَعْرَكَةِthe battle
"Indeed, they are there in the heart of the battle.
أَعْتَقِدُI believeأَنَّthatالْجَمِيعَeveryoneقَدْhasأَخَذُواtakenنَصِيبَهُمْtheir shareمِنَofالْقِتَالِthe fightingالْيَوْمَtoday
I believe that everyone has taken their share of the fighting today.
كِدْتُI almostأَسْتَسْلِمُsurrenderedبِضْعَa fewمَرَّاتٍtimes
I almost surrendered a few times.
كَانَThere wasهُنَاكَthereصُرَاخٌscreamingوَإِطْلَاقُand firing ofنَارٍfireفِيinكُلِّeveryمَكَانٍplace
There was screaming and gunfire everywhere.
حَلَّFellالظَّلَامُthe darkness
Darkness fell,
وَلَمْand I no longerأَعُدْcontinued toأَعْرِفُknowأَيْنَwhereأَنَاI was
and I no longer knew where I was,
أَوْorفِيonأَيِّwhichجَانِبٍside
or on which side.
كَيْفَHowوَجَدْتَdid you findطَرِيقَكَyour wayإِلَىtoهُنَاhere
How did you find your way here
عَلَىinأَيِّanyحَالٍcase
anyway?
فَكَتِيبَتُكَFor your battalionبَعِيدَةٌis farجِدًّاveryمِنْfromهُنَاhere
Your battalion is very far from here.
أَظُنُّI thinkأَنَّthatبِإِمْكَانِيI canالْعُثُورَfindعَلَيْهِمْthem
I think I can find them."
أَثْنَاءَDuringالْبَحْثِthe searchعَنْforكَتِيبَةِthe battalion ofهُنْرِيHenry
During the search for Henry's battalion,
بَدَاseemedصَاحِبُthe owner ofالصَّوْتِthe voiceالْمُبْتَهِجِjoyfulوَكَأَنَّas ifلَدَيْهِhe hadمَهَارَةًa skillسِحْرِيَّةًmagical
the owner of the joyful voice seemed to possess a magical skill.
كَانَHe wasقَادِرًاableعَلَىtoشَقِّmakeطَرِيقِهِhis wayبِسُهُولَةٍeasilyعَبْرَthroughالْغَابَاتِthe forestsالْمُتَشَابِكَةِintertwined
He was able to make his way easily through the intertwined forests.
وَكُلَّمَاand wheneverمَرُّواthey passedبِأُنَاسٍby peopleآخَرِينَother
And whenever they passed by other people,
أَبْدَىshowedالرَّجُلُthe manذَكَاءَthe intelligence ofالْمُحَقِّقِينَinvestigatorsوَشَجَاعَةَand the bravery ofالْأَبْطَالِheroes
the man showed the intelligence of investigators and the bravery of heroes.
كَانَتِWereالْمُشْكِلَاتُthe problemsتَخْتَفِيdisappearingأَمَامَهُbefore him
Problems would disappear before him
وَتَتَحَوَّلُand turningلِأَشْيَاءَinto thingsقَدْthat mightتُسَاعِدُهُمَاhelp themفِيinطَرِيقِهِمَاtheir path
and turning into things that might help them along their path.
كَانَWasهُنْرِيHenryيَنْتَحِيsteppingجَانِبًاasideعِنْدَمَاwhenكَانَwasرَفِيقُهُhis companionيُحَاوِلُtryingأَنْtoيَشُقَّforgeطَرِيقَthe pathالْعَوْدَةِof returnلِكِلَيْهِمَاfor both of them
Henry stepped aside when his companion tried to forge the path of return for both of them.
بَدَتِSeemedالْغَابَةُthe forestوَكَأَنَّهَاas if it wereمُكْتَظَّةٌcrowdedبِرِجَالٍwith menيَرْكُضُونَrunningفِيinدَوَائِرَcircles
The forest seemed crowded with men running in circles,
وَقَدْand indeedضَلُّواthey had lostطَرِيقَهُمْtheir way
and indeed they had lost their way,
لَكِنَّbutرَفِيقَthe companion ofهُنْرِيHenryتَجَاوَزَovercameبِهِwith himكُلَّallالْعَثَرَاتِobstacles
but Henry's companion overcame all obstacles with him
حَتَّىuntilبَدَأَhe beganيَضْحَكُto laughفِيinسَعَادَةٍhappinessوَرِضًىand satisfactionأَخِيرًاat last
until he finally began to laugh in happiness and satisfaction.
قَالَSaidالرَّجُلُthe man
The man said:
هَاBeholdقَدْyou haveوَصَلْتَarrivedأَتَرَىdo you seeتِلْكَthatالنَّارَfire
"Here you have indeed arrived, do you see that fire?"
أَوْمَأَNudgedهُنْرِيHenryبِرَأْسِهِwith his head
Henry nodded with his head,
وَتَمَلَّكَهُand was gripped byشُعُورٌa feelingبِالْحَمَاقَةِof foolishness
and he was gripped by a feeling of foolishness.
قَالَSaidالرَّجُلُthe man
The man said:
هَذِهِThis isكَتِيبَتُكَyour battalionإِلَىforاللِّقَاءِthe meetingالْآنَnowيَاOفَتَىyoung man
"This is your battalion. Until our meeting now, young man.
أَتَمَنَّىI wishلَكَyouحَظًّاluckسَعِيدًاhappy
I wish you good luck."
