ثُمَّThenجَالَتْroamedبِخَاطِرِin the mind ofهَنْرِيHenryفِكْرَةٌan ideaأُخْرَىanother:

Then, another idea roamed in Henry's mind:

فَصَحِيحٌit is trueأَنَّthatهَزِيمَةَthe defeat ofجَيْشِهِhis armyسَتُنْقِذُهُwill save himمِنْfromفَعْلَتِهِhis deed,

it is true that the defeat of his army will save him from his deed,

لَكِنَّهُbut heقَرَّرَdecidedأَنَّهُthatمِنْofغَيْرِnoالْمُجْدِيuseالتَّفْكِيرَthinkingفِيinذَلِكَthatالِاحْتِمَالِpossibility.

but he decided that it is useless to think about that possibility.

فَقَدْForكَانَhe wasيَعْلَمُknowingأَنَّthatجَيْشَهُhis armyلَنْwill notيُهْزَمَbe defeatedأَبَدًاever.

For he knew that his army would never be defeated.

فَكَّرَHe thoughtهَنْرِيHenryفِيaboutِاخْتِلَاقِfabricatingقِصَّةٍa storyجَيِّدَةٍgoodيَقُصُّهَاto tell itعَلَىtoمَسَامِعِthe ears ofالْجُنُودِthe soldiersالْآخَرِينَotherفِيinكَتِيبَتِهِhis battalion.

Henry thought about fabricating a good story to tell the other soldiers in his battalion.

فَكَّرَHe thoughtفِيaboutأُمُورٍmattersعَدِيدَةٍmany,لَكِنَّهَاbut theyجَمِيعًاallكَانَتْwereضَعِيفَةًweakلَاnotيُمْكِنُcanلِأَحَدٍanyoneتَصْدِيقُهَاbelieve it.

He thought about many matters, but they were all too weak for anyone to believe.

تَخَيَّلَHe imaginedمَشْهَدَthe scene ofأَفْرَادِthe members ofالْكَتِيبَةِthe battalionكُلِّهِمْall of themوَهُمْwhile theyيَسْخَرُونَwere mockingمِنْهُhimلِأَنَّهُbecause heفَرَّfledمِنَfromالْمَعْرَكَةِthe battle.

He imagined the scene of all the members of the battalion mocking him because he fled from the battle.

سَيَسْأَلُونَThey will ask:أَيْنَ"Where isهَنْرِيHenryفْلِمَنْجْFleming?

They will ask: "Where is Henry Fleming?

لَقَدْHe indeedهَرَبَescaped,أَلَيْسَis it notكَذَلِكَso?يَاOhإِلَهِيmy God!"

He indeed escaped, is it not so? Oh my God!"

تَخَيَّلَHe imaginedهَنْرِيHenryالْجَمِيعَeveryoneيُحَدِّقُونَstaringفِيهِat himبِنَظَرَاتٍwith looksمِلْؤُهَاfull ofالْكَراهِيَةُhatredأَيْنَمَاwhereverذَهَبَhe wentفِيinالْمُعَسْكَرِthe camp.

Henry imagined everyone staring at him with looks full of hatred wherever he went in the camp.

سَيَضْحَكُEveryone willالْجَمِيعُlaughمِنْهُat himبِأُسْلُوبٍin a wayدَنِيءٍbase,وَسَيَكُونُand he will beمَحَطَّthe target ofسُخْرِيَةِridicule byالْجَمِيعِeveryone.

Everyone will laugh at him in a base way, and he will be the target of ridicule by everyone.

Chapter Fourteen

إِصَابَةُInjury ofحَرْبٍWar

Injury of War

مَاWhatإِنِifاخْتَفَىdisappearedالْجُنُودُthe soldiersالَّذِينَwhoكَانُواwereيَسِيرُونَwalkingعَلَىonالطَّرِيقِthe roadعَنِfromالْأَنْظَارِsight,حَتَّىuntilرَأَىsawهَنْرِيHenryكَثِيرِينَmanyآخَرِينَothersقَادِمِينَcomingمِنَfromالْغَابَاتِthe forestsوَandعَبْرَacrossالْحُقُولِthe fields.

Scarcely had the soldiers walking on the road disappeared from sight when Henry saw many others coming from the forests and across the fields.

أَدْرَكَRealizedهَنْرِيHenryأَنَّهُمْthat theyكَانُواwereيَهْرُبُونَfleeingإِنْقَاذًاto saveلِحَيَاتِهِمْtheir lives.

Henry realized that they were fleeing to save their lives.

انْدَفَعُواThey rushedبِجِوَارِهِnext to himكَقَطِيعٍlike a herdمِنَofالْجَامُوسِbuffaloالْمَذْعُورِterrified,وَخَلْفَهُمْand behind themتَمَوَّجَbillowedالدُّخَانُthe smokeوَتَجَمَّعَand gatheredفَوْقَaboveقِمَمِthe topsالْأَشْجَارِof the treesبَيْنَمَاwhileاسْتَمَرَّcontinuedانْطِلَاقُthe firingالْمَدَافِعِof cannons.

They rushed past him like a herd of terrified buffalo, and behind them, smoke billowed and gathered above the tree tops while the firing of cannons continued.

انْتَابَتْSeizedهَنْرِيHenryحَالَةٌa stateمِنَofالذُّعْرِpanic,وَandحَدَّقَhe staredفِيatالْمَشْهَدِthe sceneأَمَامَهُbefore himفِيinذُهُولٍastonishment;لَقَدْindeedخَسِرَlostالْجَيْشُthe armyالْمَعْرَكَةَthe battle.

Henry was seized by a state of panic and stared at the scene before him in astonishment; indeed, the army had lost the battle.

سُرْعَانَQuicklyمَاwhatوَجَدَfoundهَنْرِيHenryنَفْسَهُhimselfوَسْطَamongالْفَارِّينَthe fugitives.

Quickly, Henry found himself among the fugitives.

حَاوَلَHe triedأَنْtoيَطْرَحَposeبَعْضَsomeالْأَسْئِلَةِquestionsعَلَىtoالْقَرِيبِينَthose close by,لَكِنْbutيَبْدُوit seemedأَنَّهُمْthat theyلَمْdid notيَسْمَعُوهُhear him.

He tried to pose some questions to those close by, but it seemed that they did not hear him.

كَانَWereالرِّجَالُthe menيَفِرُّونَfleeingفِيinكُلِّeveryاتِّجَاهٍdirection,وَأَخِيرًاand finallyأَمْسَكَcaughtهَنْرِيHenryبِذِرَاعِby the armأَحَدِone ofالرِّجَالِthe men,وَتَمَايَلَand swayedكِلَاهُمَاboth of themوَجْهًاfaceلِوَجْهٍto face.

The men were fleeing in every direction, and finally, Henry caught one of them by the arm, and both of them swayed face to face.

قَالَSaidهَنْرِيHenryمُتَلَعْثِمًاstammering:لِمَاذَا"Why…؟...?لِمَاذَاWhy…؟...?"

Henry stammered, saying: "Why...? Why...?"

صَرَخَScreamedالرَّجُلُthe man:دَعْنِي"Let me!"

The man screamed: "Let me!"

كَانَHe wasيَلْهَثُpantingوَandيَسْحَبُpullingنَفْسَهُhimselfفِيinهِيَاجٍfrenzy:دَعْنِي"Let me!"

He was panting and pulling himself in frenzy: "Let me!"

تَمْتَمَMumbledهَنْرِيHenry:لِمَاذَا"Whyلِمَاذَاwhy?"

Henry mumbled: "Why... why?"

صَاحَShoutedالرَّجُلُthe man:حَسَنًا"Fine,إِذَنْthen!"وَضَرَبَand struckهَنْرِيHenryفِيinرَأْسِهِhis headوَلَاذَand tookبِالْفِرَارِto flight.

The man shouted: "Fine, then!" and struck Henry in the head and took to flight.

سَقَطَFellهَنْرِيHenryأَرْضًاto the groundوَandوَجَدَfoundصُعُوبَةًdifficultyفِيinالْوُقُوفِstanding upثَانِيَةًagain.

Henry fell to the ground and found difficulty in standing up again.

وَعِنْدَمَاAnd whenوَقَفَhe stoodأَخِيرًاfinally,شَعَرَhe feltبِالْوَهَنِweaknessالشَّدِيدِsevere,وَكَانَتْand there wasهُنَاكَthereضَوْضَاءُa noiseصَاخِبَةٌloudفِيinرَأْسِهِhis head.

And when he finally stood, he felt severe weakness, and there was a loud noise in his head.

فِيInالنِّهَايَةِthe end,نَجَحَhe succeededفِيinالِانْتِقَالِmovingإِلَىtoالْحَشَائِشِthe weeds,وَشَعَرَand feltبِجُرْحٍa woundفِيinأَعْلَىthe upper part ofرَأْسِهِhis head.

In the end, he succeeded in moving to the weeds, and felt a wound in the upper part of his head.

رَأَىSawهَنْرِيHenryبَعْضَsomeالْجُنُودِsoldiersوَandالضُّبَّاطِofficersيُحَاوِلُونَtryingتَجْمِيعَto gatherأَنْفُسِهِمْthemselvesلِلْعَوْدَةِto returnإِلَىtoالصُّفُوفِthe ranks.

Henry saw some soldiers and officers trying to gather themselves to return to the ranks.
