Of course he did not think that the fighting would be soon.

لَاNoيُمْكِنُcanأَنْtoتَكُونَbeهُنَاكَthereمَعْرَكَةٌbattleأُخْرَىanother

There cannot be another battle.

ظَلَّHe remainedيَنْتَظِرُwaitingوَكَأَنَّand as ifالْجَمِيعَeveryoneسَيَتَوَقَّفُونَwould stopوَيَعْتَرِفُونَand acknowledgeأَنَّهُthat itكَانَwasخَطَأًa mistake

He kept waiting as if everyone would stop and acknowledge that it was a mistake.

لَكِنَّButإِطْلَاقَfiringالنِّيرَانِof the gunsبَدَأَbeganثَانِيَةًagainوَتَوَالَىand continuedفِيinكِلَاbothالِاتِّجَاهَيْنِdirections

But the firing began again, and continued in both directions.

كَانَتْWasرَقَبَةُthe neck ofهَنْرِيHenryتَرْتَعِشُtremblingوَيَدَاهُand his handsمُتَيَبِّسَتَيْنِstiff

Henry's neck was trembling, and his hands were stiff.

بَدَأَHe beganيَتَخَيَّلُto imagineأَنَّthatجُنُودَthe soldiers ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyأَفْضَلُwere betterوَأَقْوَىand strongerمِنَthanالرِّجَالِthe menفِيinفِرْقَتِهِhis squad

He began to imagine that the enemy's soldiers were better and stronger than the men in his squad.

لَاNoبُدَّdoubtوَأَنَّand thatجُنُودَthe soldiers ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyعِبَارَةٌareعَنْmerelyآلَاتٍmachinesمِنْofحَدِيدٍiron

Surely the enemy soldiers are machines of iron.

لَقَدْTheyبَدَوْاseemedكَالتَّنَانِينِlike dragonsوَسْطَin the middle ofالدُّخَانِthe smoke

They looked like dragons in the middle of the smoke.

فَجْأَةًSuddenlyتَوَقَّفَstoppedرَجُلٌa manكَانَwho wasقَرِيبًاnearمِنْtoهَنْرِيHenryوَمُنْشَغِلًاand busyبِحَشْوِwith stuffingبُنْدُقِيَّتِهِhis rifle

Suddenly, a man who was near Henry and busy with stuffing his rifle stopped.

وَلَاذَAnd fledبِالْفِرَارِto escapeوَهُوَwhile heيُطْلِقُwas shoutingصَيْحَةًa shoutعَالِيَةًloudly

And fled to escape while he was shouting loudly.

شَاهَدَWatchedرَجُلٌa manآخَرُanotherكَانَتْwho wasتَرْتَسِمُdrawingعَلَىonوَجْهِهِhis faceعَلَامَاتُsignsالشَّجَاعَةِof bravery

A man watched another who had signs of bravery on his face.

هَذَاthisالْمَشْهَدَsceneوَandتَمَلَّكَهُwas possessed byالْخَوْفُfear

This scene, and fear possessed him.

فَأَلْقَىSo he threwهُوَheالْآخَرُhimselfبِبُنْدُقِيَّتِهِhis rifleوَلَاذَand took flightبِالْفِرَارِby fleeing

So he threw his rifle and took flight.

لَمْDid notيَبْدُappearالْخِزْيُthe shameعَلَىonوَجْهِهِhis face

Shame did not appear on his face.

كَانَHe wasيَفِرُّrunning awayكَالْأَرْنَبِlike a rabbit

He ran away like a rabbit.

بَدَأَBeganرِجَالٌmenآخَرُونَothersفِيinالرَّكْضِrunningوَسْطَamidstالدُّخَانِthe smoke

Other men began to run amidst the smoke.

وَشَاهَدَهُمْAnd saw themهَنْرِيHenryفَصَرَخَso he screamedصَرْخَةَa scream ofهَلَعٍpanic

Henry saw them; so he screamed a scream of panic.

وَاسْتَدَارَAnd turnedوَأَخَذَand startedيَعْدُوrunning

And turned and started running.

لِلَحْظَةٍFor a momentفَقَدَlostهَنْرِيHenryإِحْسَاسَهُhis senseبِالِاتِّجَاهِof directionالْآمِنِthe safe

For a moment, Henry lost his sense of the safe direction.

فَالْمَوْتُSo deathوَالْإِصَابَةُand injuryيُهَدِّدَانِهِthreaten himمِنْ كُلِّfrom allصَوْبٍsides

So death and injury threaten him from all sides.

بَدَأَHe beganيَرْكُضُto runنَحْوَtowardsمُؤَخِّرَةِthe back ofفِرْقَتِهِhis group

He began to run towards the back of his group.

وَAndفَقَدَlostبُنْدُقِيَّتَهُhis gunوَandقُبَّعَتَهُhis hat

Having lost his gun and his hat.

وَAndطَارَflew openمِعْطَفُهُhis coatمَفْتُوحَopenالْأَزْرَارِat the buttonsمَعَwithالرِّيَاحِthe winds

And his coat flew open with the winds.

كَانَWasوَجْهُthe face ofهَنْرِيHenryمَكْسُوًّاcoveredبِالرُّعْبِwith terrorالَّذِيthatنَسَجَهُhe woveفِيinخَيَالِهِhis imagination

Henry's face was covered with the terror that he wove in his imagination.

حَاوَلَTriedالْمُلَازِمُthe officerأَنْtoيُمْسِكَholdبِهِhim

The officer tried to hold him.

لَكِنَّهُBut heهَرَبَran awayهَرَبَran awayمِثْلَlikeرَجُلٍa manكَفِيفٍblind

But he ran away, running like a blind man.

اصْطَدَمَCollidedكَتِفُهُhis shoulderبِإِحْدَىwith one ofالْأَشْجَارِthe treesبِقُوَّةٍforcefullyفَسَقَطَand fellأَرْضًاto the ground

His shoulder collided forcefully with one of the trees and he fell to the ground.

مَاWhatإِنْifأَدَارَhe turnedهَنْرِيHenryظَهْرَهُhis backإِلَىtoالْعَدُوِّthe enemy

As soon as Henry turned his back to the enemy.

حَتَّىUntilتَزَايَدَتْincreasedمَخَاوِفُهُhis fearsأَكْثَرَmoreفَأَكْثَرَand more

His fears increased more and more.

جَعَلَMadeخَيَالُهُhis imaginationكُلَّeveryشَيْءٍthingأَسْوَأَworseمِمَّاthan whatهُوَit isعَلَيْهِinحَقِيقَةًreality

His imagination made everything worse than what it is in reality.

وَAndبَيْنَمَاwhileكَانَhe wasيَفِرُّrunning awayرَأَىhe sawالرِّجَالَthe menعَلَىonيَمِينِهِhis rightوَandعَلَىonيَسَارِهِhis leftيَفْعَلُونَdoingالشَّيْءَthe thingنَفْسَهُitself

While he was running away, he saw the men on his right and on his left doing the same thing.

وَAndسَمِعَhe heardوَقْعَthe sound ofأَقْدَامٍfeetعَدِيدَةٍmanyخَلْفَهُbehind him

And he heard the sound of many feet behind him.

تَسَاقَطَتِFell downالْقَذَائِفُthe shellsفَوْقَaboveرَأْسِهِhis headتُصَاحِبُهَاaccompanied byصَرَخَاتٌscreamsطَوِيلَةٌlongجامِحَةٌwild

Shells fell above his head accompanied by long, wild screams.

انْتَابَOvertakenهَنْرِيHenryالذُّهُولُastonishmentعِنْدَمَاwhenمَرَّhe passedعَلَىbyجَمَاعَةٍgroupأُخْرَىanother

Henry was overtaken by astonishment when he passed by another group.

يُشَارِكُparticipatingأَفْرَادُهَاits membersفِيinالْقِتَالِthe battle

Whose members were participating in the battle.

كَانُواThey wereيُقَاتِلُونَfightingبِحَمَاسٍwith zealبَالِغٍextreme

They were fighting with extreme zeal.

وَلَاAnd notأَحَدَoneمِنْهُمْof themيَبْدُوseemedعَلَىto be ofدِرَايَةٍawarenessبِالْمَوْتِof deathالْقَادِمِcomingنَحْوَهُمْtowards them

And none of them seemed to be aware of the death coming towards them.

فَكَّرَThoughtهَنْرِيHenryأَنَّهُمْthat they wereحَمْقَىfoolsوَأَشْفَقَand felt pityعَلَيْهِمْfor them

Henry thought that they were fools and felt pity for them.

وَاصَلَContinuedهَنْرِيHenryتَحَرُّكَهُhis movementبَعِيدًاfarعَنِfromالْأَحْدَاثِthe events

Henry continued his movement far from the events.

وَأَخِيرًاAnd finallyرَأَىhe sawجِنْرَالًاa generalيَمْتَطِيridingجَوَادًاa steed

And finally, he saw a general riding a steed.

أَحْيَانًاSometimesيَكُونُisالْجِنْرَالُthe generalمُحَاطًاsurroundedبِرِجَالٍby menآخَرِينَothersعَلَىonصَهَوَاتِthe saddles ofجِيَادِهِمْtheir horses

Sometimes the general is surrounded by other men on their horses' saddles.

وَAndأَحْيَانًاsometimesأُخْرَىotherيَكُونُhe isبِمُفْرَدِهِalone

And at other times he is alone.

مَكَثَStayedهَنْرِيHenryبِجِوَارِby the side ofالْجِنْرَالِthe generalوَحَاوَلَand triedأَنْtoيَسْتَرِقَeavesdrop onالسَّمْعَthe hearingلِمَاof whatكَانَwasيَقُولُsaying

Henry stayed by the side of目 the general and tried to eavesdrop on what he was saying.
