وَهُوَAnd heعَوْنٌis a helperلِنَابِحٍfor a barkerمِنْfromبَعِيدٍfar away......مُسْتَجِيرًاseeking refugeبِقُرْبِهِin his proximityحِينَwhenأَمْسَىhe entered the evening

And he is a helper for one barking from afar... seeking refuge in his proximity when evening fell.

قَالَSaidأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakrالصِّدِّيقُ:al-Siddiq:إِنَّIndeedالرَّجُلَthe manفِيinالْبَادِيَةِthe desertإِذَاwhenضَلَّhe missesالطَّرِيقَthe road

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said: Indeed, the man in the desert, when he loses the path

وَهَالَهُand he is terrified byاللَّيْلُthe nightنَبَحَhe barksنُبَاحَthe barking ofالْكِلَابِdogs

and is terrified by the night, barks the barking of dogs

لِتَنْبَحَso that may barkكِلَابُthe dogs ofالْحَيِّthe settlementفَيَتَبَعَand he followsأَصْوَاتَهَاtheir soundsحَتَّىuntilيَصِيرَhe arrivesإِلَىatالْحَيِّ.the settlement.

so that the dogs of the settlement bark, and he follows their sounds until he reaches the settlement.

وَقَالَAnd saidآخَرُanotherخَفِيفٌ:in Khafif meter:

And another said in Khafif meter:

إِنَّIndeedقَوْمًاa peopleرَأَوْكَsaw youشِبْهًاas a likenessلِكَلْبٍto a dog......لَاmayرَأَوْاthey seeلِلظَّلَامِfor the darknessصُبْحًاa morningمُضِيًّاilluminating

Indeed, a people saw you as a likeness to a dog... may they never see for the darkness an illuminating morning.

أَنْتَYouلَاdo notتَحْفَظُpreserveالذِّمَامَthe covenantلِخَلْقٍfor any creature......وَهُوَwhile heيَرْعَىobservesالذِّمَامَthe covenantرَعْيًاan observationوَفِيًّاfaithful

You do not preserve the covenant for any creature... while he observes the covenant with faithful observance.

يَشْكُرُHe is grateful forالنَّزْرَthe meagerمِنْfromكَرِيمِnobleفِعَالٍactions......آخِرَto the end ofالدَّهْرِtimeلَاyou doتَرَاهُsee himنَسِيًّاforgetful

He is grateful for the meager of noble actions... to the end of time you do not see him forgetful.

وَتُنَادِيهِAnd you call himمِنْfromمَكَانٍa placeبَعِيدٍdistant......فَيُوَفِيكَso he comes to youطَائِعًاobedientlyمُسْتَحِيًّاmodestly

And you call him from a distant place... so he comes to you obediently and modestly.

إِنَّIndeedسُؤْلِيmy requestوَبُغْيَتِيand my desireوَمَنَايَand my hope......أَنْis thatأَرَاكَI see youالْغَدَاةَtomorrowكَلْبًاa dogسَوِيًّاcomplete

Indeed, my request, desire, and hope... is that I see you tomorrow as a complete dog.

قَدْHasأَنْشَدَنِيrecited to meأَبُوAbuعُبَيْدَةَUbaydahلِبَعْضِfor someالشُّعَرَاءِpoetsطَوِيلٌ:in Tawil meter:

Abu Ubaydah recited to me by some poets in Tawil meter:

يُعَرِّجُHe turns awayعَنْهُfrom himجَارَهُhis neighborوَشَقِيقَهُand his brother......وَيَرْغَبُwhile desiresفِيهِin himكَلْبٌa dogوَهْوَwhile heضَارِبُهُbeats him

His neighbor and his brother turn away from him... while a dog desires him even though he beats it.
