لِنَفْسِهِfor himselfبِالنَّوْمِwith sleepوَالرُّبُوضِand lying down

For himself with sleep and lying down on the earth, and he sees no carpet or pillow except that he ascends it and sits upon it.

عَلَىonالْأَرْضِthe earth

on the earth

وَهُوَand heلَاdoes notيَرَىseeبِسَاطاًa carpet

and he sees no carpet

وَلَاnorوِسَادَةًa pillowإِلَّاexceptعَلَاهَاhe ascended it

nor a pillow except that he ascended it

وَجَلَسَand satعَلَيْهَاupon it

and sat upon it.

وَأَيْضاًand alsoفَهُوَheلَاdoes notيَجِدُfind

And also he finds no way to every noble, clean place, so he falls short of it.

إِلَىtoكُلِّeveryمَوْضِعٍplaceجَلِيلٍnobleنَظِيفٍcleanسَبِيلًاa way

to every noble, clean place a way

فَيَقْصُرُso he falls shortعَنْهُof it

so he falls short of it

وَتَرَاهُand you see himمُتَخَيِّراًchoosingأَبَداًalwaysأَرْفَعَthe highestالْمَوَاضِعِplaces

And you see him always choosing the highest places in the assembly and what his owner guards.

فِيinالْمَجْلِسِthe assemblyوَمَاand whatيَصُونُهُguards itصَاحِبُهُhis owner

in the assembly and what his owner guards.

قُلْتُI saidوَالْكَلْبُthe dogيَعْرِفُknowsصَاحِبَهُhis owner

I said: The dog knows his owner and the cat, and they know their names and the places of their dwellings.

وَالسِّنَّوْرُand the catوَيَعْرِفَانِand they both knowاسْمَاهُمَاtheir names

and the cat, and they both know their names

وَمَوَاضِعَand the placesمَنَازِلِهِمَاof their dwellings

and the places of their dwellings

وَيَأْلَفَانِand they both are accustomed toمَوْطِنَهُمَاtheir homeland

and they are accustomed to their homeland.

وَإِذَاand whenطُرِدَاthey are driven awayرَجَعَاthey return

And if they are driven away they return, and if they are starved they endure, and if they are insulted they bear it.

وَإِذَاand ifأُجِيعَاthey are starvedصَبَرَاthey endure

and if they are starved they endure

وَإِذَاand ifأُهِينَاthey are insultedاحْتَمَلَاthey bear it

and if they are insulted they bear it.

وَلِلْكَلْبِand for the dogأَيْضاًalsoمِنَofالْفَضَائِلِthe virtues

And for the dog also, among virtues, is his coming to his owner's face and looking at him in his eyes and in his face.

إِتْيَانُهُis his comingوَجْهَto the faceصَاحِبِهِof his owner

is his coming to the face of his owner

وَنَظَرُهُand his lookingإِلَيْهِat himفِيinعَيْنَيْهِhis eyes

and his looking at him in his eyes

وَفِيand inوَجْهِهِhis face

and in his face

وَحُبُّهُand his loveلَهُfor himوَدُنُوُّهُand his drawing nearمِنْهُto him

and his love for him and his drawing near to him until perhaps he plays with him.

حَتَّىuntilرُبَّمَاperhapsلَاعَبَهُhe plays with him

until perhaps he plays with him

وَلَاعَبَand plays withصِبْيَانَهُhis children

and plays with his children

بِالْعَضِّwith the bitingالَّذِيwhichلَاdoes notيُؤْلِمُpainوَلَاand does notيُؤَثِّرُleave a mark

with the biting that does not pain and does not leave a mark.

وَلَهُand for himتِلْكَare thoseالْأَنْيَابُcanines

And for him are those canines which, if he embedded them in the tree, would leave a mark.

الَّتِيwhichلَوْifأَنْشَبَهَاhe embedded themفِيinالشَّجَرِthe treeلَأَثَّرَتْthey would leave a mark

which if he embedded them in the tree would leave a mark.

قَالَsaidبَعْضُsomeالشُّعَرَاءِpoetsخَفِيفٌkhafif meter

Some poet said in the Khafif meter:

أَيُّهَاOالشَّانِئُdetester ofالْكِلَابَdogsأَصِخْlendلِيto me

O detester of dogs, lend me your ear from you, and do not be a hinderer.

مِنْكَfrom youسَمْعاًan earوَلَاand do notتَكُونَنَّbeحَبْسَاa hinderer

from you an ear, and do not be a hinderer

إِنَّindeedفِيinالْكَلْبِthe dogفَاعْلَمَنَّthen knowخِصَالاًtraits

Indeed, in the dog—then know—are traits of noble deeds, numbered as five.

مِنْofشَرِيفِnobleالْفِعَالِdeedsيُعْدَدْنَthey are numberedخَمْسَاfive

of noble deeds, they are numbered five

حِفْظُguardingمَنْwhoكَانَwasمُحْسِناًgoodوَوَفَاءٌand loyalty

Guarding of whoever was good and loyalty to the one who takes him as a war-guard and a protector.

لِلَّذِيto the one whoيَتَّخِذُهُtakes himحَرْباًas a warوَحَرْساًand a protector

to the one who takes him as a war and a protector

وَاتِّبَاعٌand followingلِرَحْلِهِhis mount-saddleوَإِذَاand whenمَاwhat

And following his mount, and when the speech of the brave becomes a whisper out of fear.

صَارَbecameنُطْقُspeechالشُّجَاعِof the braveلِلْخَوْفِout of fearهَمْسَاa whisper

the speech of the brave becomes a whisper out of fear.
