الْعَرْشِthe ThroneثَالِثًاThird::مِيكَائِيلَMichael::مُوكَّلٌin chargeبِالْقَطْرِof rainوَالْنَّبَاتِand plants
Third: Michael is in charge of rain and plants.
وَهَذَأُولَاءِAnd theseالثَّلاثَةِthreeكُلُّهُمْallمُوكَّلُونَare in chargeبِمَاover whatفِيهِis in itحَيَاةٌlife؛;فَجِبْرِيلُFor Gabrielمُوكَّلٌis in chargeبِالْوَحْيِof the revelationوَفِيهِand in itحَيَاةٌlifeالْقُلُوبِof hearts
And these three are all in charge of what contains life; for Gabriel is in charge of revelation and therein is life for hearts.
وَمِيكَائِيلُAnd Michaelبِالْقَطْرِof rainوَالْنَّبَاتِand plantsوَفِيهِand thereinحَيَاةٌlifeالْأَرْضِof the earth
And Michael is in charge of rain and plants, and therein is life for the earth.
وَإِسْرَافِيلُAnd Israfilبِنَفْخِwith the blowingالْصُّورِof the trumpetوَفِيهِAnd thereinحَيَاةٌlifeالْأَجْسَادِof bodiesيَوْمَon the Dayالمَّعَادِof resurrection
And Israfil with the blowing of the trumpet, and therein is life for the bodies on the Day of resurrection.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisكَانَwasالنَّبِيُّthe Prophet ﷺ (peace be upon him)يَتَوَسَّلُseeking intercessionبِرُّبُوبِيَّةِby the Lordshipاللَّهِof Allahلَهُمْfor themفِيinدُعَاءِthe supplicationالِافْتِتَاحِof openingفِيinصَلَاةِthe prayerاللَّيْلِof the night
And for this reason, the Prophet (peace be upon him) sought intercession by the Lordship of Allah for them in the supplication of the opening in the night prayer.
فَيَقُولُHe says::اللَّهُمَّO Allah!رَبِّLordجِبْرَائِيلَof Gabrielوَمِيكَائِيلَand Michaelوَإِسْرَافِيلَand Israfil!فَاطِرَCreatorالسَّمَاوَاتِof the heavensوَالْأَرْضِand the earth!عَالِمُKnowerالْغَيْبِof the unseenوَالشَّهَادَةِand of the witness!أَنْتَYouتَحْكُمُjudgeبَيْنَamongعِبَادِكَYour servantsفِيْمَاin whatكَانُواthey wereفِيهِin itيَاخْتَلِفُونَdisagreeاهْدِنِيGuide meلِمَاto whatاخْتَلَفُواthey disagreeفِيهِin itمِنَofالْحَقِّtruthبِإِذْنِكَby Your permission;إِنَّكَIndeed, YouتَهْدِيguideمَنْwhomeverتَشَاءُYou willإِلَىtoصِرَاطٍa straight pathمُّسْتَقِيمٍstraight.”
He says: "O Allah, Lord of Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil! Creator of the heavens and the earth! Knower of the unseen and the witnessed! You judge between Your servants in what they disagree; guide me to that in which they differ from the truth by Your permission; Indeed, You guide whom You will to a straight path."
هَذَاThisالدُّعَاءِsupplicationالَّذِيthat whichكَانَwasيَقُولُهُhe used to sayفِيinقِيَامِstandingاللَّيْلِof the nightمُتَوَسِّلًاSeeking intercessionبِرُّبُوبِيَّةِby the Lordshipاللَّهِof Allahلَهُمْfor them
This supplication that he used to say in the standing of the night seeking intercession by the Lordship of Allah for them.
كَمَاSimilarlyنَعْلَمُwe knowأَنَّthatمِنْهُمْamong themمِنْsomeوُكِّلَare appointedبِقَبْضِto takeأَرْوَاحِthe soulsبَنِيof the childrenآدَمَof Adam،,أَوْorبِقَبْضِtakingرُوحِthe soulكُلِّof everyذِيhavingرُوحٍa soulوَهُمْand theyمَلَكُthe Angelالْمَوْتِof deathوَأَعْوَانِهِand his assistants
Similarly, we know that some among them are appointed to take the souls of the children of Adam, or to take the soul of every being that has a soul, and they are the Angel of death and his assistants.
وَلَاAnd he is not calledيُسَمَّىit is namedعَزْرَائِيلَAzrael;لِأَنَّهُfor heلَمhas notيَثْبُتbeen provenعَنْfromالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetعَلَيْهِupon himالصَّلَاةُthe prayersوَالسَّلَامُand peaceأَنَّthatاسْمَهُhis name
And he is not called Azrael; for it has not been proven from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that his name is this.
قَالَHe saidتَعَالَىExalted is He﴿(Quran mark)حَتَّىUntilإِذَاwhenجَاءَcomesأَحَدُكُمone of youالْمَوْتُthe deathتَوَفَّتْهُtakes upon himرُسُلُنَاOur messengersوَهُمْand theyلَاdo notيُفَرِّطُونَexceed
He said: "Until when one of you comes the death, our messengers take upon him and they do not exceed."
وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىExalted is He﴿(Quran mark)قُلْSayيَتَوَفَّنَّكُمwill take youمَلَكُthe Angelالمَوْتِof deathالَّذِيWhoوُكِّلَis in chargeبكُمover you
And He said: "Say, the Angel of death who is in charge over you will take you."
وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىExalted is He﴿(Quran mark)اللَّهُAllahيَتَوَفَّىtakesالْأَنْفُسَthe soulsحِينَwhenمَوْتِهَاthey die))[الزمر: ٤٢[Al-Zumar: 42]
And Allah takes the souls when they die [Al-Zumar: 42].
