He made it by the command and care of Allah. And Allah said to him: 'And make the ship with Our eyes and Our inspiration [Hud: 37]; So Allah the Exalted looks at him while he is making the ark.

And Allah described it here in His saying: 'Possessing the planks and nails: (which means) the possessor. The boards are of wood, and the nails bind the wood like nails and ropes and what resembles that; and most commentators agree that what is meant by it is the nails that are used to bind the woods(1).

It flows with Our eyes; this evidence: it flows; that is: possessed of planks and nails, in the eyes of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. And the meaning of it flowing with it is that it is accompanied with Our look, with Our eyes; so the letter 'ba' here indicates companionship. It flows on the water that came down from the sky and sprang forth from the earth; because Noah upon him be peace prayed to his Lord: 'Indeed, I have been overcome, so help me.' [Al-Qamar: 10]; Allah the Exalted said: 'So We opened the doors of the sky with much water pouring down; and We burst forth the earth with springs [Al-Qamar: 11 - 12]; So this ship was flowing by the eye of Allah the Mighty and Majestic.

One might say: Why did he not say: 'And We carried him on the ship,' or: 'We carried him on the vessel,' but he said: 'on that which possesses the planks and nails?' (1) It was said by Ibn Abbas and Sa'id ibn Jubair, Al-Qurtubi, Qatadah, Ibn Zayd, and it was chosen by Ibn Jarir. See: the interpretations of Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir.
