وَلِذَٰلِكَAnd thereforeكَانَwasأَكْثَرَmostمَاwhatجَاءَcameفِيinالْقُرْآنِthe Quran::نَفْيُdenialالْمُسَاوَاةِof equality::﴿(قُلْSayهَلْareيَسْتَوِيequalالَّذِينَthose whoيَعْلَمُونَknowوَالَّذِينَand those whoلَاdo notيَعْلَمُونَknow﴾)
And therefore, most of what has come in the Quran is the denial of equality: "Say, are those who know equal to those who do not know?" [Surah Az-Zumar: 9]
﴿(هَلْareيَسْتَوِيequalالْأَعْمَىthe blindوَالْبَصِيرُand the seeingأَمْorهَلْareتَسْتَوِىequalالظُّلُمَتُthe darknessوَالنُّورُand the light﴾)
"Are the blind and the seeing equal? Or are the darkness and the light equal?" [Surah Ar-Ra'd: 16]
لَاNoيَسْتَوِيis equalمَنْكُرٌthe sinnerمَنْwhoأَنفَقَspentمِنْfromقَبْلِbeforeالْفَتْحِthe victoryوَandقَتَلُkilledأُوْلَـٰئِكَthoseأَعْظَمُare greaterدَرَجَةًdegreeمِّنَthanالَّذِينَthose whoأَنفَقُواspentمِنْfromبَعْدُafterوَandقَتَلُواkilled﴾)
"No, the sinner who spent before the victory and killed is greater in degree than those who spent after and killed." [Surah Al-Hadid: 10]
﴿(لَّاNoيَسْتَوِيis equalالْمَقْمُودِينَthe disabledمِنَofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersغَيْرُother thanأُولِيthe possessorsالضَّرَرِof harmوَandالمُجَاهِدِينَthe striving onesفِيinسَبِيلِthe wayاللَّهِof Allah﴾)
"No, the disabled among the believers are not equal to those striving in the way of Allah." [Surah An-Nisa: 95]
وَلَمْAnd notيَأْتِhas comeحَرْفٌa letterوَاحِدٌoneفِيinالْقُرْآنِthe Quranيَأْمُرُthat commandsبِالْمُسَاوَاةِequalityأَبَدًever،,إِنَّمَاbutيَأْمُرُcommandsبِالْعَدْلِwith justice
"And not a single letter has come in the Quran that commands equality ever; it only commands justice."
وَكَلِمَةٌAnd the word(الْعَدْلِ)(justice)أَيْضًاalsoتَجِدُونَهَاyou find itمَقْبُولَةًacceptableلَدَىwithالنُّفُوسِthe souls
"And the word (justice) is also found acceptable among the souls."
وَأَحْبَبْتُAnd I lovedأَنْtoأُنَبِّهَwarnعَلَىonهَذَاthis؛;لِئَلَّاso that notنَكُونَwe beفِيinكَلَامِنَاour wordsإِمَّعَةًfollowers؛;لِأَنَّforبَعْضَsomeالنَّاسِpeopleيَأْخُذُونَtakeالْكَلَامَthe speechعَلَىonعَوَاهِنِهِits surface؛;فَلَاso do notيَفْكَرُواthinkفِيinمَدْلُولِهِits denotationوَفِيْمَنْand in whomوَضَعَهُit placedوَفِيand inمَغْزَاهُits significanceعِندَatمَنْwhoوَضَعَهُplaced it
"And I wanted to warn against this; so that we do not become mere followers in our words; because some people take the speech at face value; so they do not think about its denotation, and in whom it was placed, and its significance at the one who placed it."
وَفِيAnd inالْآيَةِthe verseمِنَofالْأَسْمَاءِthe namesوَالصَّفَاتِand the attributesمَاwhatسَبَقَprecededفِيinالَّتِيthe one thatقَبْلَهَاbefore it
"And in the verse are names and attributes that preceded those in the previous one."
الْآيَةُThe verseالثَّالِثَةُthe thirdقَوْلُهُis his saying::﴿(فَمَاSo whatاسْتَقَامُواupright they wereلَكُمْfor youفَاسْتَقِيمُواso be uprightلَهُمْto themإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahيُحِبُّlovesالْمُتَّقِينَthe righteous
"The third verse is his saying: 'So what they were upright for you, be upright to them. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous.'" [Surah At-Tawbah: 7]
مَاWhatشَرْطِيَّةٌconditionalوَفِعْلٌand the verbالشَّرْطِof the conditionاسْتَقَامُواwere upright،,وَجَوَابُهَاand its responseفَاسْتَقِيمُواbe upright؛;أَيْ:that is:مَهْمَاhoweverاسْتَقَامَwere uprightلَكُمْfor youالْمُعَاهِدُونَthe covenant holdersالَّذِينَwhoعَاهَدتُّمُyou made a covenantعِندَatالْمَسْجِدِthe mosqueالْحَرَامِthe sacredبِالْوَفَاءِto fulfillبِالْعَهْدِthe covenant؛;فَاسْتَقِيمُواso be uprightلَهُمْto themفِيinذَٰلِكَthat
"What is conditional is: and the conditional verb is 'be upright'; that is: however much the covenant holders, who you made a covenant at the sacred mosque to fulfill the covenant; so be upright to them in that."
وَهَذِهِAnd thisالْجُمْلَةُsentenceالشَّرْطِيَّةُconditionalتَقْتَضِيrequiresبِمَنْطُوقِهَا؛by its stipulation;أَنْهُمْthat theyإِذَاifاسْتَقَامُواwere uprightلَنَا؛to us;وَجَبَit is obligatoryأَنْthatنَسْتَقِيمَwe be uprightلَهُمْ،to them,وَأَنْand thatتُوَفُّواto fulfillبِعَهْدِهِم.their covenant.
"And this conditional sentence requires that they, if they were upright to us; it is obligatory that we be upright to them, and that we fulfill their covenant."
