وَرُوِيَAndعَنْitابْنِwasعَبَّاسٍnarratedأَنَّهُfromقَالَ:Ibn Abbasقَدِمْتُthatعَلَىheمُعَاوِيَةَsaid:
And it was narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said: I arrived at Muawiyah
وَقَدْwhileقَعَدَheعَلَىwasسَرِيرِهِsittingوَجَمَعَonأَصْحَابَهُhisوَوُفُودَbedالْعَرَبِandعِنْدَهُ،gathered
and he was sitting on his bed and had gathered his companions and the delegations of the Arabs with him,
فَدَخَلْتُsoفَسَلَّمْتُI enteredوَقَعَدْتُ،and greetedفَقَالَ:and sat down,مِنَand he said:النَّاسِWhoيَاareابْنَthe peopleعَبَّاسٍ؟O
so I entered, greeted him, and sat down. He said: Who are the people, O Ibn Abbas?
فَقُلْتُ:Iنَحْنُ.said:قَالَ:Weفَإِذَاare.غِبْتُمْ؟Heقُلْتُ:said:فَلَاAndأَحَدَ.if
I said: We are. He said: And if you are absent? I said: Then no one.
قَالَ:Heتَرَىsaid:أَنِّيDoقَعَدْتُyouهَذَاthinkالْمَقْعَدَthatبِكُمْ؟I
He said: Do you think I sat in this seat because of you?
قُلْتُ:Iنَعَمْ،said:فَبِمَنْYes,قَعَدْتُ؟then
I said: Yes, then because of whom did I sit?
قَالَ:Heبِمَنْsaid:كَانَBecauseمِثْلَofحَرْبِoneبْنِlikeأُمَيَّةَ.Harb
He said: Because of one like Harb bin Umayya.
قُلْتُ:Iمَنْsaid:أَكْفَأَTheعَلَيْهِoneإِنَاءَهُwhoوَأَجَارَهُtippedبِرِدَائِهِ.his
I said: The one who tipped his vessel over him and protected him with his cloak.
قَالَHeفَغَضِبَsaidوَقَالَ:andوَارِbecameشَخْصَكَangryمِنِّيandشَهْراًsaid:فَقَدْHideأَمَرْتُyourلَكَpersonبِصِلَتِكَfromوَأَضْعَفْتُهَاmeلَكَ.for
He became angry and said: Hide your person from me for a month, for I have ordered your gift and doubled it for you.
فَلَمَّاWhenخَرَجَIbnابْنُAbbasعَبَّاسٍwentقَالَout,لِخَاصَّتِهِ:heأَلَاsaidتَسْأَلُونِيtoمَاhisالَّذِيinnerأَغْضَبَcircle:مُعَاوِيَةَ؟Will
When Ibn Abbas went out, he said to his inner circle: Will you not ask me what angered Muawiyah?
إِنَّهُIndeed,لَمْnoيَلْتَقِtwoأَحَدٌmenمِنْfromرُؤَسَاءِtheقُرَيْشٍchieftainsفِيofعَقَبَةٍQurayshوَلَاmetمَضِيقٍinمَعَaقَوْمٍmountainإِلَّاpassلَمْorيَتَقَدَّمْهُnarrowأَحَدٌdefileحَتَّىwithيَجُوزَهُ،a people
Indeed, no two chieftains of Quraysh ever met in a mountain pass or narrow defile with any people, but that one preceded the other until he passed him,
فَالْتَقَىsoحَرْبُHarbبْنُbinأُمَيَّةَUmayyaمَعَmetرَجُلٍaمِنْmanبَنِيfromتَمِيمٍBaniفِيTamimعَقَبَةٍinفَتَقَدَّمَهُa passالتَّمِيمِيُّ،and
so Harb bin Umayya met a man from Bani Tamim in a pass, and the Tamimi preceded him.
فَقَالَHarbحَرْبٌ:said:أَنَاIحَرْبُamبْنُHarbأُمَيَّةَ،binفَلَمْUmayya,يَلْتَفِتْbutإِلَيْهِheوَجَازَهُ،did
Harb said: I am Harb bin Umayya. But he did not turn to him and passed him by.
فَقَالَ:Heمَوْعِدُكَsaid:مَكَّةُ.Your
He said: Your appointment is Mecca.
فَبَقِيَTheالتَّمِيمِيُّTamimiدَهْراًremainedثُمَّforأَرَادَa longدُخُولَtime,مَكَّةَthenفَقَالَ:heمَنْwantedيُجِيرُنِيtoمِنْenterحَرْبِMeccaبْنِandأُمَيَّةَ؟said:
The Tamimi remained for a long time, then he wanted to enter Mecca and said: Who will grant me protection from Harb bin Umayya?
فَقَالُوا:Theyعَبْدُsaid:الْمُطَّلِبِ.Abd
They said: Abd al-Muttalib.
قَالَ:Heعَبْدُsaid:الْمُطَّلِبِAbdأَجَلُّal-Muttalibقَدْراًisمِنْtooأَنْgrandioseيُجِيرَinعَلَىstatusحَرْبٍ،to
He said: Abd al-Muttalib is too grandiose in status to grant protection against Harb,
فَأَتَىsoلَيْلاًheدَارَcameالزُّبَيْرِatبْنِnightعَبْدِtoالْمُطَّلِبِtheفَدَقَّhouseعَلَيْهِ،of
so he came at night to the house of al-Zubayr bin Abd al-Muttalib and knocked on it,
فَقَالَandالزُّبَيْرُal-Zubayrلِلْغَيْدَاقِ:saidقَدْtoجَاءَنَاGhaydaq:رَجُلٌAإِمَّاmanطَالِبُhasحَاجَةٍcomeوَإِمَّاtoطَالِبُus,قُرًىeitherوَإِمَّاseekingمُسْتَجِيرٌa need,وَقَدْorأَعْطَيْنَاهُseekingمَاhospitality,أَرَادَor
and al-Zubayr said to Ghaydaq: A man has come to us, either seeking a need, or seeking hospitality, or seeking protection, and we have given him what he wanted.
فَقَالَ:Heفَخَرَجَsaid:إِلَيْهِSoالزُّبَيْرُ،al-Zubayrفَقَالَwentالتَّمِيمِيُّ:out
He said: So al-Zubayr went out to him, and the Tamimi said:
لاقَيْتُIحَرْباًmetفِيHarbالثَّنِيَّةِinمُقْبِلاًthe...mountainوَالصُّبْحُpassأَبْلَجُapproaching,ضَوْءُهُandلِلسَّارِيthe
I met Harb in the mountain pass approaching... while the morning was bright, its light for the traveler
فَدَعَاSoبِصَوْتٍheوَاکْتَنَىcalledلِيُرَوْعَنِيout...withوَدَعَاa voiceبِدَعْوَتِهِandيُرِيدُusedفَخَارِيhis
So he called out with a voice and used his epithet to frighten me... and called with his call wanting my glory
فَتَرَكْتُهُSoكَالْكَلْبِIيَنْبَحُleftوَحْدَهُhim...likeوَأَتَيْتُa dogأَهْلَbarkingمَعَالِمٍalone,وَفَخَارِand
So I left him like a dog barking alone... and came to the people of landmarks and glory
لَيْثاًAهَبْرَراًfierceيُسْتَجَارُlionبِقُرْبِهِwhose...vicinityرَحْبَisالْمَبَاءَةِsoughtمُكْرِماًforلِلْجَارِprotection,
A fierce lion whose vicinity is sought for protection, spacious in abode, honoring the neighbor
وَلَقَدْAndحَلَفْتُIبِزَمْزَمٍsworeوَبِمَكَّةٍby...ZamzamوَالْبَيْتِandذِيbyالْأَحْجَارِMecca,وَالْأَسْتَارِand
And I swore by Zamzam and by Mecca, and the House of stones and curtains
إِنَّThatالزُّبَيْرَal-Zubayrلَمَانِعِيisمِنْtrulyخَوْفِهِmy...protectorمَاfromكَبَّرَhisالْحَاجُّfear,فِيasالْأَمْصَارِlong
That al-Zubayr is truly my protector from his fear, as long as the pilgrims shout takbir in the cities
فَقَالَ:Heتَقَدَّمْsaid:فَإِنَّاAdvance,لَاforنَتَقَدَّمُweمَنْdoنُجِيرُهُ.not
He said: Advance, for we do not abandon the one whom we protect.
فَتَقَدَّمَSoالتَّمِيمِيُّtheفَدَخَلَTamimiالْمَسْجِدَ،advancedفَرَآهُandحَرْبٌenteredفَقَامَtheإِلَيْهِmosque.فَلَطَمَهُ،Harb
So the Tamimi advanced and entered the mosque. Harb saw him, stood up to him, and slapped him.
فَحَمَلَThenعَلَيْهِal-Zubayrالزُّبَيْرُattackedبِالسَّيْفِhimفَعَدَاwithحَتَّىtheدَخَلَsword,دَارَsoعَبْدِheالْمُطَّلِبِfledفَقَالَ:untilأَجِرْنِيheمِنَenteredالزُّبَيْرِ،the
Then al-Zubayr attacked him with the sword, so he fled until he entered the house of Abd al-Muttalib and said: Protect me from al-Zubayr,
فَأَكْفَأَsoعَلَيْهِheجَفْنَةًturnedكَانَa largeهَاشِمٌbowlيُطْعِمُoverفِيهَاhimالنَّاسَ،which
so he turned a large bowl over him, which Hashim used to feed the people in,
فَبَقِيَandهُنَاكَheسَاعَةًremainedثُمَّthereقَالَforلَهُ:anاخْرُجْ.hour,
and he remained there for an hour, then he said to him: Come out.
فَقَالَ:Heكَيْفَsaid:أَخْرُجُHowوَتِسْعَةٌcanمِنْIوَلَدِكَcomeقَدْoutاحْتَبَوْاwhileبِسُيُوفِهِمْnineعَلَىofالْبَابِ؟your
He said: How can I come out while nine of your sons are wrapping themselves with their swords at the door?
فَأَلْقَىSoعَلَيْهِheرِدَاءًthrewكَانَoverكَسَاهُhimإِيَّاهُa cloakسَيْفُthatبْنُSaifذِيbinيَزَنَDhiلَهُYazanطُرْتَانِhadخَضْرَاوَانِ،given
So he threw over him a cloak that Saif bin Dhi Yazan had given him, which had two green borders,
فَخَرَجَandعَلَيْهِمْheفَعَلِمُواwentأَنَّهُoutقَدْtoأَجَارَهُthem,فَتَفَرَّقُواsoعَنْهُ.they
and he went out to them, and they knew that he had granted him protection, so they dispersed from him.
قَالَ:Heوَحَضَرَsaid:مَجْلِسَAndمُعَاوِيَةَthereعَبْدُattendedاللَّهِtheبْنُassemblyعَبَّاسٍofوَابْنُMuawiyahالْعَاصِ،Abdullah
He said: And there attended the assembly of Muawiyah Abdullah bin Abbas and Ibn al-As,
فَأَقْبَلَandعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنُJaafarجَعْفَرٍapproached,فَلَمَّاandنَظَرَwhenإِلَيْهِIbnابْنُal-Asالْعَاصِlookedقَالَ:atقَدْhimجَاءَكُمْheرَجُلٌsaid:كَثِيرُThereالْخَلَوَاتِhasبِالتَّمَنِّيcomeوَالطَّرَبَاتِtoبِالتَّغَنِّي،you
and Abdullah bin Jaafar approached, and when Ibn al-As looked at him, he said: There has come to you a man much given to seclusion with wishful thinking and merriment with singing,
مُحِبٌّlovingلِلْقِيَانِ،songstresses,كَثِيرٌaboundingمِزَاحُهُ،inشَدِيدٌjesting,طَمَاحُهُ،intenseصَدُوفٌinعَنِhisالسِّنَانِ،ambition,ظَاهِرٌturningالطَّيْشِ،awayلَيِّنُfromالْعَيْشِ،theأَخَّاذٌspear,بِالسَّلَفِ،manifestمِنْفَاقٌinبِالسَّرَفِ.frivolity
loving songstresses, abounding in jesting, intense in his ambition, turning away from the spear, manifest in frivolity, soft in living, taking loans, lavish in extravagance.
فَقَالَIbnابْنُAbbasعَبَّاسٍ:said:كَذَبْتَYouوَاللَّهِhaveأَنْتَliedوَلَيْسَbyكَمَاGod,ذَكَرْتَ،andوَلَكِنَّهُnotلِلَّهِasذُكُورٌ،youوَلِنَعْمَائِهِmentioned,شَكُورٌ،butوَعَنِheالْخَنَاisزُجُورٌ،mindful
Ibn Abbas said: You have lied by God, and he is not as you mentioned, but he is mindful of God, grateful for His blessings, refraining from obscenity,
جَوَادٌgenerous,كَرِيمٌ،noble,سَيِّدٌa master,حَلِيمٌ،forbearing,مَاجِدٌglorious,لَهَمِيمٌ،ambitious,إِنْifابْتَدَأَheأَصَابَ،initiatedوَإِنْheسُئِلَsucceeded,أَجَابَ،andغَيْرُifحَصِرٍaskedوَلَاheهَيَّابٍ،answered,وَلَاneitherفَحَّاشٍtongue-tiedعَيَّابٍ،nor
generous, noble, a master, forbearing, glorious, ambitious, if he initiated he succeeded, and if asked he answered, neither tongue-tied nor cowardly, nor foul-mouthed nor atoning with faults,
حَلَّheمِنْsettledقُرَيْشٍamongفِيQurayshكَرِيمِinالنِّصَابِ،a nobleكَالْهِزْبَرِlineage,الضَّرْغَامِ،likeالْجَرِيءِtheالْمِقْدَامِ،fierceفِيlion,الْحَسَبِtheالْقَمْقَامِ،bold
he settled among Quraysh in a noble lineage, like the fierce lion, the bold and valiant, in noble and immense lineage,
لَيْسَnotيَدَّعِيclaimingلِدَعِيٍّ،a falseوَلَاclaim,يُدْنِيnorلِدَنِيٍّ،bringingكَمَنِcloseاخْتَصَمَa baseفِيهِperson,مِنْlikeقُرَيْشٍhimشِرَارُهَاaboutفَغَلَبَwhomعَلَيْهِtheجَزَّارُهَا،worst
not claiming a false claim, nor bringing close a base person, like the one about whom the worst of Quraysh disputed and his butchers overcame him,
فَأَصْبَحَsoأَلْأَمَهَاheحَسَباًbecameوَأَدْنَاهَاtheمَنْصِباً،meanestيَنُوءُinمِنْهَاlineageبِالذَّلِيلِandوَيَأْوِيlowestمِنْهَاinإِلَىstatus,الْقَلِيلِ،struggling
so he became the meanest in lineage and lowest in status, struggling with the lowly and seeking refuge in the few,
يَتَذَبْذَبُwaveringبَيْنَbetweenالْحَيَّيْنِtheكَالسَّاقِطِtwoبَيْنَtribesالْفِرَاشَيْنِ،likeلَاtheالْمُضْطَرُّoneإِلَيْهِمْfallingعَرَفُوهُbetweenوَلَاtwoالظَّاعِنُmattresses,عَنْهُمْneitherفَقَدُوهُ،did
wavering between the two tribes like the one falling between two mattresses, neither did the one in need of them recognize him nor did the one departing from them miss him.
وَلَيْتَAndشِعْرِيIبِأَيِّwishقَدَمٍIتَتَعَرَّضُknewلِلرِّجَالِwithوَبِأَيِّwhatحَسَبٍfootتُبَارِزُyouعِنْدَconfrontالنِّضَالِ،men
And I wish I knew with what foot you confront men and with what lineage you compete at the time of contest,
أَبِنَفْسِكَisفَأَنْتَitالْوَغْدُwithالزَّنِيمُyourselfأَمْforبِمَنْyouتَنْتَمِيareإِلَيْهِ،theفَأَهْلُignobleالسَّفَهِoutcastوَالطَّيْشِorوَالدَّنَاءَةِwithفِيtheقُرَيْشٍ،one
is it with yourself for you are the ignoble outcast or with the one you belong to, for the people of foolishness, levity, and baseness in Quraysh,
لَاneitherبِشَرَفٍfamousفِيforالْجَاهِلِيَّةِhonorشُهِرُوا،inوَلَاpre-Islamicبِقَدِيمٍtimes,فِيnorالْإِسْلَامِrememberedذُكِرُوا،for
neither famous for honor in pre-Islamic times, nor remembered for anything ancient in Islam,
غَيْرَexceptأَنَّكَthatتَتَكَلَّمُyouبِغَيْرِspeakلِسَانِكَ،withوَتَنْطِقُotherبِغَيْرِthanأَزْكَانِكَ،your
except that you speak with other than your tongue, and utter with other than your minds.
وَاللَّهِByلَكَانَGod,أَبْيَنَitلِلْفَضْلِwouldوَأَطْهَرَhaveلِلْعُدْوَانِbeenأَنْclearerيُنْزِلَكَforمُعَاوِيَةُvirtueمَنْزِلَةَandالْبَعِيدِpurerالسَّحِيقِ،forفَإِنَّهُenmityطَالَماthatسَلَسَMuawiyahدَاؤُكَ،placeوَطَمَحَyouبِكَinرَجَاؤُكَtheإِلَىpositionالْغَايَةِofالْقُصْوَىtheالَّتِيdistantلَمْstranger,يَخْضَرَّforبِهَاyourرَعْيُكَdiseaseوَلَمْhasيُورِقْlongبِهَاrunغُصْنُكَ.rampant
By God, it would have been clearer for virtue and purer for enmity that Muawiyah place you in the position of the distant stranger, for your disease has long run rampant and your hope has soared with you to the utmost limit where your pasture has not grown green and your branch has not leafed.
قَالَAbdullahعَبْدُbinاللَّهِJaafarبْنُsaid:جَعْفَرٍ:Iأَقْسَمْتُimploreعَلَيْكَyouلَمَّاbyأَمْسَكْتَanفَإِنَّكَoathعَنِّيtoنَاضَلْتَstop,وَلِيforفَاوَضْتَ.you
Abdullah bin Jaafar said: I implore you by an oath to stop, for you have defended me and negotiated on my behalf.
قَالَIbnابْنُAbbasعَبَّاسٍ:said:دَعْنِيLeaveوَالْعَبْدَmeفَإِنَّهُandقَدْtheكَانَslave,يَهْدِرُforخَالِياًheإِذْusedلَاtoيَجِدُbrayمَرَامِيّاً،in
Ibn Abbas said: Leave me and the slave, for he used to bray in private when he found no opponent,
وَقَدْandأُتِيحَthereلَهُhasضَيْغَمٌbeenشَرِسٌ،matchedوَلِلْأَقْرَانِwithمُفْتَرِسٌ،himوَلِلْأَرْوَاحِa fierceمُخْتَلِسٌ.lion,
and there has been matched with him a fierce lion, a predator of peers, and a snatcher of souls.
فَقَالَAmrعَمْرُbinبْنُal-Asالْعَاصِ:said:دَعْنِيLeaveيَاme,أَمِيرَOالْمُؤْمِنِينَCommanderانْتَصِفْofمِنْهُtheفَوَاللَّهِFaithful,مَاthatتَرَكَIشَيْئاً.may
Amr bin al-As said: Leave me, O Commander of the Faithful, that I may take vengeance upon him, for by God he did not leave a thing.
قَالَIbnابْنُAbbasعَبَّاسٍ:said:دَعْهُLeaveفَلَاhim,يُبْقِيforالْمُبْقِيtheإِلَّاoneعَلَىwhoنَفْسِهِ،spares
Ibn Abbas said: Leave him, for the one who spares only spares himself,
فَوَاللَّهِforإِنَّbyقَلْبِيGodلَشَدِيدٌ،myوَإِنَّheartجَوَابِيisلَعَتِيدٌ،indeedوَبِاللَّهِstrong,الثِّقَةُ،andفَإِنِّيmyكَمَاanswerقَالَisنَابِغَةُready,بَنِيandذُبْيَانَ:in
for by God my heart is indeed strong, and my answer is ready, and in God is trust, for I am as the Nabighah of Bani Dhubyan said:
وَقَبْلَكَAndمَاbeforeقُذِعْتُyouوَقَادَعُونِيI...wasفَمَاreviledنَزْرُandالْكَلاَمِIوَلَاreviledشَجَانِيthem
And before you I was reviled and I reviled them... so neither was my speech scanty nor did it grieve me
