يَصُدُّTurns awayالشَّاعِرُthe poetالْعَرَّافُthe divinerعَنِّيfrom me
The divining poet turns away from me...
صُدُودَwith the turning awayالْبِكْرِof the virgin camelعَنْfromقَرْمٍa nobleهِجَانِwhite stallion
like the turning of a virgin camel from a noble white stallion.
[مَحَاسِنُ[The virtuesكَلامِof the speech ofغَانِمَةَGhanimahبِنْتِdaughter ofغَانِمٍ]Ghanim]
[The virtues of the speech of Ghanimah, daughter of Ghanim]
[فِي[Regardingشَرَفِthe nobility ofبَنِيBaniهَاشِمٍHashimوَفَخْرِهِمْ]and their pride]
[Regarding the nobility of Banu Hashim and their pride]
قِيلَ:It was said:وَلَمَّاAnd whenبَلَغَreachedغَانِمَةَGhanimahبِنْتَdaughter ofغَانِمٍGhanim
It was said: When it reached Ghanimah, daughter of Ghanim,
سَبُّthe insulting ofمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahوَعَمْرِوand Amrبْنِson ofالْعَاصِal-Asبَنِيof BanuهَاشِمٍHashim
that Muawiyah and Amr ibn al-As insulted Banu Hashim,
قَالَتْshe saidلِأَهْلِto the people ofمَكَّةَ:Mecca:أَيُّهَاOالنَّاسُpeople,
she said to the people of Mecca: "O people,
إِنَّverilyقُرَيْشاًQurayshلَمْdid notتَلِدْgive birthمِنْfromرَقْمٍRaqmوَلَاnorرُقْمٍ،Ruqm,
Quraysh did not give birth from Raqm or Ruqm,
سَادَتْthey became mastersوَجَادَتْ،and were generous,وَمُلِّكَتْand were given sovereigntyفَمَلَكَتْ،and ruled,
they became masters and were generous, were given sovereignty and ruled,
وَفُضِّلَتْand were favoredفَفُضِلَتْ،and excelled,وَاصْطُفِيَتْand were chosenفَاصْطَفَتْ،and chose,
and were favored and excelled, and were chosen and chose,
لَيْسَthere is notفِيهَاin themكَدَرُturbidity ofعَيْبٍa defectوَلَاnorأَفَنُweakness ofرِيبٍ،suspicion,
there is in them no turbidity of defect nor weakness of suspicion,
وَلَاnorحُشِرُواwere they gatheredطَاغِينَas tyrantsوَلَاnorحَادُواdid they deviateنَادِمِينَ،as repentant,
nor were they gathered as tyrants, nor did they deviate as repentant,
وَلَاnorالْمَغْضُوبِthose upon whom is wrathعَلَيْهِمْupon themوَلَاnorالضَّالِّينَ،the astray,
nor those upon whom is wrath, nor the astray.
إِنَّVerilyبَنِيBanuهَاشِمٍHashimأَطْوَلُare the longestالنَّاسِof peopleبَاعاًin reach
Verily, Banu Hashim are the most generous of people,
وَأَمْجَدُand the most gloriousالنَّاسِof peopleأَصْلاًin originوَأَحْلَمُand the most forbearingالنَّاسِof peopleحِلْماًin forbearance
and the most glorious in origin, the most forbearing in forbearance,
وَأَكْثَرُand the mostالنَّاسِof peopleعَطَاءً،in giving,مِنَّاfrom us isعَبْدُAbdمَنَافٍManafالَّذِيwhoيَقُولُsaysفِيهِabout himالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
and the most abundant in giving. From us is Abd Manaf, concerning whom the poet says:
كَانَتْQuraysh wasقُرَيْشٌan eggبَيْضَةًthat splitفَتَفَلَّقَتْopen
Quraysh was an egg that split open,
فَالْمُخُّso the marrowخَالِصُهَاits pure partلِعَبْدِbelongs to AbdمَنَافِManaf
and its purest marrow belongs to Abd Manaf.
وَوَلَدُهُAnd his sonهَاشِمٌHashimالَّذِيwhoهَشَمَbrokeالثَّرِيدَthe tharidلِقَوْمِهِ،for his people,
And his son is Hashim, who broke the tharid for his people,
وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
and concerning him the poet says:
هَشَمَHe brokeالثَّرِيدَthe tharidلِقَوْمِهِfor his peopleوَأَجَارَهُمْand gave them refuge
He broke the tharid for his people and gave them refuge,
وَرِجَالُwhile the men ofمَكَّةَMeccaمُسَنْتُونَwere suffering droughtعِجَافٌand emaciated
while the men of Mecca were suffering drought and emaciated.
ثُمَّThenمِنَّاfrom us isعَبْدُAbdالْمُطَّلِبِal-Muttalibالَّذِيwhoسُقِينَاwe were given rainبِهِthrough himالْغَيْثَ،the rain,
Then from us is Abd al-Muttalib, through whom we were given rain,
وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
and concerning him the poet says:
وَنَحْنُAnd weسَنِيُّthe year ofالْمَحْلِdroughtقَامَstoodشَفِيعُنَاour intercessor
And in the year of drought, our intercessor stood
بِمَكَّةَin Meccaيَدْعُوprayingوَالْمِيَاهُwhile the watersتَغُورُwere sinking
in Mecca praying while the waters were sinking.
وَابْنُهُAnd his sonأَبُوAbuطَالِبٍTalibعَظِيمُthe great one ofقُرَيْشٍ،Quraysh,وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
And his son is Abu Talib, the great one of Quraysh, and concerning him the poet says:
آتَيْتُهُI came to him withمُلْكاًdominionفَقَامَso he stood forبِحَاجَتِيmy need
I came to him with dominion so he fulfilled my need,
وَتَرَىand you seeالْعُلَيْجَthe wretched little manخَائِباًdisappointedمَذْمُومَاand blamed
and you see the wretched little man disappointed and blamed.
وَمِنَّاAnd from us isالْعَبَّاسُal-Abbasبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِal-Muttalib
And from us is al-Abbas son of Abd al-Muttalib,
أَرْدَفَهُwhom made ride behind himرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,صَلَّىmay God's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،be upon him,
whom the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, placed behind him on his mount,
فَأَعْطَاهُand gave himمَالَهُ،his wealth,وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
and gave him his wealth, and concerning him the poet says:
رَدِيفُThe rider behindرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِGod,لَمْI have notأَرَseenمِثْلَهُhis like
The rider behind the Messenger of God, I have not seen his like,
وَلَاnorمِثْلَهُhis likeحَتَّىuntilالْقِيَامَةِthe Resurrectionيُوجَدُwill be found
nor will his like be found until the Resurrection.
وَمِنَّاAnd from us isحَمْزَةُHamzahسَيِّدُthe master ofالشُّهَدَاءِ،the martyrs,وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
And from us is Hamzah, the master of the martyrs, and concerning him the poet says:
أَبَاOيَعْلَىYa'la,لَكَfor youالْأَرْكَانُthe pillarsهُدَّتْwere shaken
O Abu Ya'la, for you the pillars were shaken,
وَأَنْتَand you areالْمَاجِدُthe nobleالْبَرُّthe piousالْوَصُولُthe maintaining of ties
and you are the noble, pious one who maintains ties.
وَمِنَّاAnd from us isجَعْفَرٌJa'farذُوthe possessor ofالْجَنَاحَيْنِthe two wings
And from us is Ja'far, the possessor of the two wings,
أَحْسَنُthe most handsome ofالنَّاسِpeopleحُسْناًin beautyوَأَكْمَلُهُمْand the most perfect of themكَمَالاً،in perfection,
the most handsome of people in beauty and the most perfect of them in perfection,
لَيْسَhe is notبِغَدَّارٍa traitorوَلَاnorخَتَّارٍ،deceitful,
not a traitor nor deceitful.
بَدَّلَهُGod replacedاللَّهُHimجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyلَهُfor him
God, Majestic and Mighty, replaced for him
بِكُلِّwith everyيَدٍhandلَهُof hisجَنَاحاًa wingيَطِيرُhe fliesبِهِwith itفِيinالْجَنَّةِ،Paradise,
for every hand of his a wing with which he flies in Paradise,
وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
and concerning him the poet says:
هَاتُواBringكَجَعْفَرِنَاlike our Ja'farالطَّيَّارِthe Flierأَوْorكَعَلِيِّنَاlike our Ali
Bring the likes of our Ja'far the Flier or our Ali,
أَلَيْسَاare they notأَعَزَّthe mightiestالنَّاسِof peopleعِنْدَtoالْخَلَائِقِcreation
are they not the mightiest of people to creation?
وَمِنَّاAnd from us isأَبُوAbuالْحَسَنِal-HasanعَلِيُّAliبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍ،Talib,
And from us is Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abi Talib,
رَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُ،him,أَفْرَسُthe most skilled horseman ofبَنِيBanuهَاشِمٍHashim
may God be pleased with him, the most skilled horseman of Banu Hashim
وَأَكْرَمُand the most noble ofمَنْthose whoاحْتَفَىwore shoesوَتَنَعَّلَand sandalsبَعْدَafterرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,
and the most noble of those who wore shoes and sandals after the Messenger of God,
صَلَّىmay God's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،be upon him,وَمِنْand fromفَضَائِلِهِhis virtuesمَاis that whichقَصُرَfell short ofعَنْكُمْyouأَنْبَاؤُهَا،their reports,
may God bless him and grant him peace. Among his virtues are those whose reports fell short of you,
وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
and concerning him the poet says:
وَهَذَاAnd this isعَلِيٌّAli,سَيِّدُthe master ofالنَّاسِpeople,فَاتَّقُواso fear
And this is Ali, the master of people, so fear
عَلِيّاًAliبِإِسْلَامٍwith an Islamتَقَدَّمَthat precededمِنْfromقَبْلُbefore
Ali with an Islam that preceded from before.
وَمِنَّاAnd from us isالْحَسَنُal-Hasanبْنُson ofعَلِيٍّ،Ali,رَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُ،him,
And from us is al-Hasan ibn Ali, may God be pleased with him,
سِبْطُthe grandson ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,صَلَّىmay God's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،be upon him,
the grandson of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace,
وَسَيِّدُand the master ofشَبَابِthe youths ofأَهْلِthe people ofالْجَنَّةِ،Paradise,وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
and the master of the youths of the people of Paradise, and concerning him the poet says:
وَمَنْAnd whoeverيَكُisجَدُّهُhis grandfatherحَقّاًtrulyنَبِيّاًa Prophet
And whoever has a prophet truly as his grandfather,
فَإِنَّthenلَهُfor him isالْفَضِيلَةَvirtueفِيamongالْأَنَامِmankind
then for him is the virtue among mankind.
وَمِنَّاAnd from us isالْحُسَيْنُal-Husaynبْنُson ofعَلِيٍّ،Ali,رِضْوَانُthe good pleasure ofاللَّهِGodعَلَيْهِ،upon him,
And from us is al-Husayn ibn Ali, may the good pleasure of God be upon him,
حَمَلَهُcarried himجِبْرِيلُ،Gabriel,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,عَلَىonعَاتِقِهِhis shoulder
whom Gabriel, upon him be peace, carried on his shoulder,
وَكَفَىand it sufficesبِذَلِكَwith thatفَخْراً،as pride,وَفِيهِand concerning himيَقُولُsaysالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
and that suffices as pride, and concerning him the poet says:
نَفَىWarded offعَنْهُfrom himعَيْبَthe defect ofالْآدَمِيِّينَhuman beingsرَبُّهُhis Lord
His Lord warded off from him the defect of human beings,
وَمِنْand fromمَجْدِهِhis glory isمَجْدُthe glory ofالْحُسَيْنِal-Husaynالْمُطَهَّرِthe purified
and from his glory is the glory of the purified al-Husayn.
