قِيلَ:Itوَقَدِمَwas said: And arrivedالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanبْنُson ofعَلِيٍّ،Ali,رِضْوَانُmay the pleasure ofاللَّهِGodعَلَيْهِ،be upon him,عَلَىtoمُعَاوِيَةَ،Mu'awiyah,
It was said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali, may God's pleasure be upon him, arrived before Mu'awiyah.
فَلَمَّاso whenدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَيْهِupon himوَجَدَhe foundعِنْدَهُwith himعَمْرَوAmrبْنَson ofالْعَاصِAl-Asوَمَرْوَانَand Marwanبْنَson ofالْحَكَمِAl-Hakamوَالْمُغِيرَةَand Al-Mughirahبْنَson ofشُعْبَةَShu'bahوَصَنَادِيدَand the chieftains ofقَوْمِهِhis peopleوَوُجُوهَand the notables ofالْيَمَنِYemenوَأَهْلَand the people ofالشَّامِ،Al-Sham,
When he entered upon him, he found with him Amr ibn al-As, Marwan ibn al-Hakam, al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, the chieftains of his people, and the notables of Yemen and al-Sham.
فَلَمَّاso whenنَظَرَlookedإِلَيْهِat himمُعَاوِيَةُMu'awiyahأَقْعَدَهُhe seated himعَلَىonسَرِيرِهِhis couchوَأَقْبَلَand turnedعَلَيْهِto himبِوَجْهِهِwith his faceيُرِيهِshowing himالسُّرُورَjoyبِمَقْدَمِهِ،at his arrival,
When Mu'awiyah saw him, he seated him on his couch and turned to him with his face, showing him joy at his arrival.
فَلَمَّاso whenنَظَرَlookedمَرْوَانُMarwanإِلَىatذَلِكَthatحَسَدَهُhe envied himوَكَانَand hadمُعَاوِيَةُMu'awiyahقَالَsaidلَهُمْ:to them:
When Marwan saw that, he envied him, for Mu'awiyah had said to them:
لَاDo notتُحَاوِرُواconverse withهَذَيْنِthese twoالرَّجُلَيْنِmenفَلَقَدْfor indeedقَلَّدَاكُمْthey have saddled you withالْعَارَshameوَفَضَحَاكُمْand disgraced youعِنْدَbeforeأَهْلِthe people ofالشَّامِ،Al-Sham,
"Do not converse with these two men, for indeed they have saddled you with shame and disgraced you before the people of al-Sham,"
يَعْنِيmeaningالْحَسَنَAl-Hasanبْنَson ofعَلِيٍّ،Ali,رَضِيَmay God beاللَّهُpleasedعَنْهُمَا،with them both,وَعَبْدَand Abdullahاللَّهِson ofبْنَson ofالْعَبَّاسِ،Al-Abbas,رَضِيَmay God beاللَّهُpleasedعَنْهُمَا،with them both,
meaning Al-Hasan ibn Ali, may God be pleased with them both, and Abdullah ibn al-Abbas, may God be pleased with them both.
فَقَالَSo saidمَرْوَانُ:Marwan:يَاOحَسَنُHasan,لَوْلَاwere it not forحِلْمُthe clemency ofأَمِيرِthe Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulوَمَاand whatقَدْhasبَنَىbuiltلَهُfor himآبَاؤُهُhis fathersالْكِرَامُthe nobleمِنَofالْمَجْدِgloryوَالْعَلَاءِand high statusمَاwould notأَقْعَدَكَhave seated youهَذَاthisالْمَقْعَدَseatوَلَقَتَلَكَand he would have killed youوَأَنْتَwhile youلَهُto himمُسْتَوْجِبٌwere deservingبِقَوْدِكَby leadingالْجَمَاهِيرَ،the masses,
So Marwan said: "O Hasan, were it not for the clemency of the Commander of the Faithful and the glory and high status built for him by his noble fathers, he would not have seated you in this seat and he would have killed you, for you deserved it by leading the masses.
فَلَمَّاSo whenأَحْسَسْتَyou sensedبِنَاusوَعَلِمْتَand you knewأَنْthatلَاnoطَاقَةَpowerلَكَfor youبِفُرْسَانِagainst the horsemen ofأَهْلِthe people ofالشَّامِal-Shamوَصَنَادِيدِand the chieftains ofبَنِيBanuأُمَيَّةَUmayyahأَذْعَنْتَyou submittedبِالطَّاعَةِin obedienceوَاحْتَجَرْتَand took refugeبِالْبَيْعَةِin the pledge of allegianceوَبَعَثْتَand you sentتَطْلُبُasking forالْأَمَانَ،safety,
When you sensed us and knew that you had no power against the horsemen of al-Sham and the chieftains of Banu Umayyah, you submitted in obedience, took refuge in the pledge of allegiance, and sent asking for safety.
أَمَاNowوَاللَّهِby Godلَوْلَاwere it not forذَلِكَthatلَأُرِيقَwould have been shedدَمُكَ،your blood,وَعَلِمْتَand you knewأَنَّاthat weنُعْطِيgiveالسُّيُوفَthe swordsحَقَّهَاtheir dueعِنْدَatالْوَغَى،battle,فَاحْمَدِso praiseاللَّهَGodإِذْwhenابْتَلَاكَHe tested you withبِمُعَاوِيَةَMu'awiyahفَعَفَاso he forgaveعَنْكَyouبِحِلْمِهِout of his clemencyثُمَّthenصَنَعَhe treatedبِكَyouمَاwith whatتَرَى،you see."
Now by God, were it not for that, your blood would have been shed, and you knew that we give swords their due in battle; so praise God when He tested you with Mu'awiyah, for he forgave you out of his clemency, then treated you as you see."
فَنَظَرَThen lookedإِلَيْهِat himالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanفَقَالَ:and said:وَيْحَكَWoe to youيَاOمَرْوَانُMarwan,لَقَدْverilyتَقَلَّدْتَyou have shoulderedمَقَالِيدَthe keys ofالْعَارِshameفِيinالْحُرُوبِwarsعِنْدَuponمُشَاهَدَتِهَاwitnessing themوَالْمُخَاذَلَةَand desertionعِنْدَatمُخَالَطَتِهَا،engaging in them,
Then Al-Hasan looked at him and said: "Woe to you, O Marwan! Verily you have shouldered the keys of shame in wars upon witnessing them, and desertion upon engaging in them.
نَحْنُ،We,هَبِلَتْكَmay mothers mournالْهَوَابِلُ،you,لَنَاareالْحُجَجُthe decisive proofsالْبَوَالِغُconclusiveوَلَنَاand areإِنْifشَكَرْتُمْyou are gratefulعَلَيْكُمُupon youالنِّعَمُthe blessingsالسَّوَابِغُ،abundant,
We—may mothers mourn you—possess the conclusive arguments, and upon you, if you are grateful, are the abundant blessings.
نَدْعُوكُمْWe call youإِلَىtoالنَّجَاةِsalvationوَتَدْعُونَنَاand you call usإِلَىtoالنَّارِ،the Fire,فَشَتَّانَhow great is the differenceمَاwhat isبَيْنَbetweenالْمَنْزِلَتَيْنِ،the two stations,
We invite you to salvation and you invite us to the Fire; how great is the difference between the two stations!
تَفْخَرُYou boastبِبَنِيof BanuأُمَيَّةَUmayyahوَتَزْعُمُand claimأَنَّهُمْthat they areصُبَّرٌpatientفِيinالْحُرُوبِwarsأُسْدٌlionsعِنْدَatاللِّقَاءِ،encounter,
You boast of Banu Umayyah and claim that they are steadfast in wars, lions at the encounter.
ثَكِلَتْكَMay your motherأُمُّكَbereave youأُولَئِكَthose areالْبَهَالِيلُthe noble lordsالسَّادَةُthe mastersوَالْحُمَاةُand the defendersالذَّادَةُthe protectorsوَالْكِرَامُand the nobleالْقَادَةُleadersبَنُوsons ofعَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِ،Al-Muttalib,
May your mother bereave you! Those are the noble lords, the masters, the vigilant defenders, and the generous leaders, the sons of Abd al-Muttalib.
أَمَاNowوَاللَّهِby GodلَقَدْverilyرَأَيْتُهُمْI saw themوَجَمِيعَand allمَنْwhoفِيinهَذَاthisالْبَيْتِhouseمَاdid notهَالَتْهُمُterrify themالْأَهْوَالُthe terrorsوَلَمْand norيَحِيدُواdid they turn awayعَنِfromالْأَبْطَالِthe heroesكَاللَّيُوثِlike the lionsالضَّارِبَةِstrikingالْبَاسِلَةِvaliantالْحَنِقَةِ،wrathful,
By God, I have seen them and all who are in this house; terrors did not appall them, nor did they turn away from heroes, being like striking, valiant, wrathful lions.
فَعِنْدَهَاThen at that timeوَلَّيْتَyou turnedهَارِباًfleeingوَأُخِذْتَand you were takenأَسِيراًcaptiveفَقَلَّدْتَso you saddledقَوْمَكَyour people withالْعَارَshameلِأَنَّكَbecause youفِيinالْحُرُوبِwarsخَوَّارٌ،are cowardly,
Then at that time you turned fleeing and were taken captive, bringing shame upon your people because in wars you are a coward.
أَيُرَاقُIs to be shedدَمِيmy bloodزَعَمْتَ؟you claim?أَفَلَاWhy did you notأَرَقْتَshedدَمَthe blood ofمَنْhe whoوَثَبَassaultedعَلَىagainstعُثْمَانَUthmanفِيinالدَّارِthe houseفَذَبَحَهُand slaughtered himكَمَاasيُذْبَحُis slaughteredالْجَمَلُthe camelوَأَنْتَwhile youتَثْغُوwere bleatingثُغَاءَthe bleating ofالنَّعْجَةِa eweوَتُنَادِيand crying outبِالْوَيْلِwith woeوَالثُّبُورِand ruinكَالْأَمَةِlike the slave-girlاللَّكْعَاءِ،vile,
My blood, you claim, is to be shed? Why did you not shed the blood of the one who assaulted Uthman in his house and slaughtered him as a camel is slaughtered, while you were bleating like a ewe and crying out with woe and ruin like a vile slave-girl?
أَلَاDid you notدَفَعْتَdefendعَنْهُhimبِيَدٍwith a handأَوْorنَاضَلْتَfightعَنْهُfor himبِسَهْمٍ؟with an arrow?لَقَدِVerilyارْتَعَدَتْshookفَرَائِصُكَyour flanksوَغَشِيَand became coveredبَصَرُكَyour visionفَاسْتَغْثْتَso you sought helpبِيfrom meكَمَاasيَسْتَغِيثُseeks helpالْعَبْدُthe slaveبِرَبِّهِ،from his Lord,
Did you not defend him with a hand or fight for him with an arrow? Verily your flanks shook and your vision became covered, so you sought help from me as a slave seeks help from his Lord.
فَأَنْجَيْتُكَSo I saved youمِنَfromالْقَتْلِbeing killedوَمَنَعْتُكَand protected youمِنْهُfrom itثُمَّthenتَحُثُّyou inciteمُعَاوِيَةَMu'awiyahعَلَىagainstقَتْلِي،killing me,وَلَوْand hadرَامَattemptedذَلِكَthatمَعَكَwith youلَذُبِحَhe would have been slaughteredكَمَاjust asذُبِحَwas slaughteredابْنُson ofعَفَّانَ،Affan,
I saved you from being killed and protected you from it, yet you incite Mu'awiyah against killing me! Had he attempted that with you, he would have been slaughtered just as the son of Affan was slaughtered.
أَنْتَYouمَعَهُwith himأَقْصَرُare shorter ofيَدًاhandوَأَضْيَقُand narrower ofبَاعًاreachوَأَجْبَنُand more cowardly ofقَلْبًاheartمِنْthan toأَنْthatتَجْسُرَyou dareعَلَىuponذَلِكَthat,ثُمَّthenتَزْعُمُyou claimأَنِّيthat Iابْتُلِيتُwas tested withبِحِلْمِthe clemency ofمُعَاوِيَةَ،Mu'awiyah,
You, alongside him, are shorter of hand, narrower of reach, and more cowardly of heart than to dare upon that. Then you claim that I was tested by Mu'awiyah's clemency!
أَمَاNowوَاللَّهِby Godلَهُوَhe isأَعْرَفُmore knowingبِشَأْنِهِof his own standingوَأَشْكَرُand more gratefulلِمَاfor whatوَلَّيْنَاهُwe entrusted to himهَذَاof thisالْأَمْرَaffairفَمَتَىso wheneverبَدَاit appearsلَهُto himفَلَاthen let him notيُغْضِيَنَّcloseجَفْنَهُhis eyelidعَلَىoverالْقَذَىthe speckمَعَكَ،with you,
By God, he is far more aware of his own standing and more grateful for what we entrusted to him of this affair; so whenever it becomes apparent to him, let him not close his eyelid over a speck of dust regarding you!
فَوَاللَّهِFor by GodلَأُثْخِنَنَّI will certainly afflict severelyأَهْلَthe people ofالشَّامِal-Shamبِجَيْشٍwith an armyيَضِيقُtoo narrow for whichعَنْهُthereinفَضَاؤُهَاis its expanseوَيَسْتَأْصِلُand it will exterminateفُرْسَانَهَاits horsemenثُمَّthenلَاwill notيَنْفَعُكَbenefit youعِنْدَatذَلِكَthat timeالْهَرَبُflightوَالرَّوَغَانُand evasionوَلَاnorيَرُدُّwill ward offعَنْكَfrom youالطَّلَبَthe pursuitتَدْرِيجُكَyour sequencing ofالْكَلاَمَ،speech,
By God, I will certainly afflict the people of al-Sham with an army whose vastness they will find too narrow, and it will exterminate their horsemen. Then flight and evasion will not benefit you at that time, nor will your artful phrasing ward off pursuit from you.
فَنَحْنُFor we areمِمَّنْfrom those whoseلَاnotيُجْهَلُis unknownآبَاؤُنَاour fathersالْقُدَمَاءُthe ancientالْأَكَابِرُgreat onesوَفُرُوعُنَاand our branchesالسَّادَةُare the mastersالْأَخْيَارُ،the pious,انْطِقْspeakإِنْifكُنْتَyou areصَادِقاً.truthful.
For we are of those whose ancient, great fathers are not unknown, and whose scions are the pious masters. Speak if you are truthful!
فَقَالَSo saidعَمْرٌو:Amr:يَنْطِقُHe speaksبِالْخَنَىwith obscenityوَتَنْطِقُwhile you speakبِالصِّدْقِ.with truth.ثُمَّThenأَنْشَأَhe beganيَقُولُ:reciting:
So Amr said: "He speaks with obscenity, while you speak with truth." Then he began reciting:
قَدْIndeedيَضْرِطُfartsالْعَيْرُthe he-assوَالْمِكْوَاةُwhile the branding ironتَأْخُذُهُis applied to it......لَاnotيَضْرِطُfartsالْعَيْرُthe he-assوَالْمِكْوَاةُwhile the branding ironفِيis inالنَّارِthe fire
The he-ass farts while the branding iron is applied to it... The he-ass does not fart when the branding iron is in the fire.
ذُقْTasteوَبَالَthe consequence ofأَمْرِكَyour affairيَاOمَرْوَانُ.Marwan.
"Taste the consequence of your affair, O Marwan."
وَأَقْبَلَAnd turnedعَلَيْهِto himمُعَاوِيَةُMu'awiyahفَقَالَ:and said:قَدْIndeedكُنْتُI wasنَهَيْتُكَforbidding youعَنْfromهَذَاthisالرَّجُلِmanوَأَنْتَwhile youتَأْبَىrefuseإِلَّاexceptانْهِمَاكاًto plungeفِيمَاinto whatلَاdoes notيَعْنِيكَ،concern you,
Mu'awiyah turned to him and said: "I had forbidden you from this man, but you refuse except to plunge into what does not concern you.
ارْبَعْRestعَلَىuponنَفْسِكَyourselfفَلَيْسَfor is notأَبُوكَyour fatherكَأَبِيهِlike his fatherوَلَاnorأَنْتَare youمِثْلَهُ،like him;أَنْتَyou areابْنُthe son ofالطَّرِيدِthe banishedالشَّرِيدِoutcastوَهُوَand he isابْنُthe son ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,صَلَّىmay the blessings ofاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,الْكَرِيمِ،the noble,
Control yourself! Your father is not like his father, nor are you like him. You are the son of the banished outcast, and he is the son of the Messenger of God—may God bless him and grant him peace—the noble one.
وَلَكِنَّHoweverرُبَّmany aبَاحِثٍsearcherعَنْforحَتْفِهِhis doomوَحَافِرٍand diggerعَنْforمَدِيَتِهِ.his blade.
However, many a searcher brings about his own doom and digs for his own blade."
فَقَالَSo saidمَرْوَانُ:Marwan:ارْمِShootمِنْfromدُونِbehindبَيْضَتِكَyour helmetوَقُمْand standبِحُجَّةِwith the argument ofعَشِيرَتِكَ.your clan.
So Marwan said: "Defend your own sanctuary and stand with the argument of your clan!"
ثُمَّThenقَالَhe saidلِعَمْرٍو:to Amr:طَعَنَكَstabbed youأَبُوهُhis fatherفَوَفَيْتَso you savedنَفْسَكَyourselfبِخُصيَيْكَwith your testiclesفَلِذَلِكَand thereforeتُحَذِّرُهُ.you warn against him.
Then he said to Amr: "His father stabbed you, and you saved yourself with your testicles, and therefore you warn against him."
وَقَامَAnd he stood upمَغْضَباً.angry.
And he stood up angry.
فَقَالَSo saidمُعَاوِيَةُ:Mu'awiyah:لَاDo notتُجَارِvie withالْبُحُورَthe seasفَتَغْمُرَكَlest they overwhelm youوَلَاnorالْجِبَالَthe mountainsفَتُبْهِرَكَlest they crush youوَاسْتَرِحْand restمِنَfromالْاعْتِذَارِ.apologizing.
So Mu'awiyah said: "Do not vie with the seas lest they overwhelm you, nor the mountains lest they crush you, and rest from apologizing."
