It was said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, asked permission to enter upon Muawiyah while Abdullah ibn Jaafar and Amr ibn al-As were with him, and permission was granted to him.

When he approached, Amr said: There has come to you the inarticulate, stammering one whose jaws are chubby. Abdullah ibn Jaafar said: Hold your tongue! For by Allah, you have aimed at a smooth round rock which torrents cascade down from, mountain goats fall short of, and arrows cannot reach. So beware of al-Hasan, beware, for you continue to graze upon the flesh of a man from Quraysh, and you have shot but your arrow did not miss, and you struck fire but your flint did not spark.

So al-Hasan heard the speech, and when the people took their seats he said: O Muawiyah, there still remains with you a slave grazing upon the flesh of people! Verily by Allah, if I wished, matters between us would escalate and hearts would be distressed by them. Then he began to recite:

And they mentioned that Amr ibn al-As said to Muawiyah one day: Send word to al-Hasan ibn Ali and command him to deliver a sermon on the pulpit, perhaps he will falter so that may be a means by which we taunt him. So Muawiyah sent to him, and he ascended the pulpit while the people had gathered for him, and he praised Allah and extolled Him, then said:

Al-Hasan said: Verily the caliph is he who walks by the conduct of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and acts in obedience to Allah. And the caliph is not he who practices tyranny, suspends the Sunnahs, and takes the world as a father and mother. Rather, that is a king who attained a sovereignty, enjoys it briefly, whereas it has been cut off from him, and he hastened its pleasure while its burden remained upon him. He was as Allah, Majestic and Mighty, said: And I know not, perhaps it is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a time.

Then he departed. Muawiyah said to Amr: By Allah, you intended nothing save my humiliation! The people of the Levant did not think that anyone was like me until they heard from al-Hasan what they heard.
