مِنَfromالْقِدْرِthe pot،,وَيَأْكُلُand he eatsقَبْلَbeforeالنُّضْجِcooking،,وَقَبْلَand beforeأَنْthatتَنْزِلَit descendsالْقِدْرُthe pot،,وَيَتَتَامُّand he is completedالْقَوْمُ1the people۔.

From the pot, and he eats before it is cooked, and before the pot is taken down, and the people are finished (see footnote 1).

وَand«"النَّشَّافُthe dryer (snatcher)»"،,الَّذِيwhoيَأْخُذُtakesحَرْفَedgeالْجَرْدَقَةِthe flatbread،,فَيَفْتَحُهُand opens it،,ثُمَّthenيَغْمِسُهُdips itفِيinرَأْسِhead (top)الْقِدْرِthe pot،,وَيُشَرِّبُهُand soaks itالدَّسَمَthe fat۔.

And the 'nashshaf' (the dryer), who takes the edge of the flatbread, opens it, then dips it in the top of the pot and soaks it with fat.

يَسْتَأْثِرُhe monopolizesبِذَٰلِكَwith thatدُونَwithoutأَصْحَابِهِhis companions۔.

He keeps it to himself, excluding his companions.

وَand«"الْمُرْسَالُthe sender»"رَجُلَانِtwo men::أَحَدُهُمَاone of themإِذَاwhenوَضَعَhe placedفِيinفِيهِhis mouthلُقْمَةَa morselهَرِيسَةٍof harisa (a dish)،,أَوْorثَرِيدَةٍtharida (a dish)،,أَوْorحَيْسَةٍhaysa (a dish)،,أَوْorأَرُزَّةٍ2rice dish،,أَرْسَلَهَاhe sent itفِيinجَوْفِinteriorحَلْقِهِhis throatإِرْسَالًاsending۔.

And the 'mursal' (the sender) are two men: one of them, if he puts a morsel of harisa, or tharida, or haysa, or rice dish in his mouth, he sends it down into the depths of his throat.

وَالْوَجْهُand the aspectالْآخَرُthe other::هُوَhe isالَّذِيwhoإِذَاwhenمَشَىhe walkedفِيinأَشَبٍdense plantationمِنْofفَسِيلٍyoung palm treesأَوْorشَجَرٍtrees،,قَبَضَhe graspedعَلَىonرَأْسِhead (top)السَّعْفَةِ3the palm branch،,أَوْorعَلَىonرَأْسِhead (top)الْغُصْنِthe branch،,لِيُنَحِّيَهَاto move it asideعَنْfromوَجْهِهِhis face،,فَإِذَاand whenقَضَىhe fulfilledوَطَرَهُ4his need،,أَرْسَلَهَاhe let it goمِنْfromيَدِهِhis hand۔.

And the other aspect: he is the one who, when he walks in a dense plantation of young palm trees or trees, he grasps the top of a palm branch (see footnote 3) or the top of a branch, to move it away from his face, and when he has fulfilled his need (see footnote 4), he lets it go from his hand.

فَهِيَso itلَاnotمَحَالَةَinevitablyتَصُكُّstrikesوَجْهَfaceصَاحِبِهِits companion (the next person)الَّذِيwhoيَتْلُوهُfollows him،,لَاnotيَحْفِلُhe caresبِذَٰلِكَabout that،,وَلَاand notيَعْرِفُhe knowsمَاwhatفِيهِin it۔.

So it inevitably strikes the face of the one who follows him; he (the first) does not care about that and does not know what harm is in it.

وَأَمَّاand as for«"اللُّكَّامُthe 'lukkam' (one who crams)»"،,فَالَّذِيso the one whoفِيinفِيهِhis mouthاللُّقْمَةُthe morsel،,ثُمَّthenيَلْكَمُهَاhe crams itبِأُخْرَىwith another،,قَبْلَbeforeإِجَادَةِdoing wellمَضْغِهَاchewing it،,أَوْorابْتِلَاعِهَاswallowing it۔.

And as for the 'lukkam' (the crammer), it is the one who has a morsel in his mouth, then he crams another one on top of it, before thoroughly chewing or swallowing it.

وَand«"الْمَصَّاصُthe sucker»"،,الَّذِيwhoيَمُصُّsucksجَوْفَinsideقَصَبَةِthe boneالْعَظْمِthe bone،,بَعْدَafterأَنِthatاسْتَخْرَجَhe extractedمُخَّهُits marrow،,وَاسْتَأْثَرَand he keptبِهِitدُونَwithoutأَصْحَابِهِhis companions۔.

And the 'massas' (the sucker), who sucks the inside of the bone, after having extracted its marrow, and keeps it for himself to the exclusion of his companions.

وَأَمَّاand as for«"النَّفَّاضُthe flapper»"،,فَالَّذِيso the one whoإِذَاwhenفَرَغَhe finishedمِنْfromغَسْلِwashingيَدِهِhis handفِيinالطَّسْتِthe basin،,نَفَضَhe flickedيَدَيْهِhis handsمِنَfromالْمَاءِthe water،,فَنَضَحَand he splashedعَلَىonأَصْحَابِهِhis companions۔.

And as for the 'naffad' (the flapper), it is the one who, when he finishes washing his hand in the basin, flicks his hands of water, and splashes his companions.

وَأَمَّاand as for«"الدَّلَّاكُthe rubber»"،,فَالَّذِيso the one whoلَاnotيُجِيدُhe does wellتَنْقِيَةَcleaningيَدَيْهِhis handsبِالْأُشْنَانِ5with ash (cleaning agent)،,وَيُجِيدُand he does wellدَلْكَهَاrubbing them۔.

And as for the 'dallak' (the rubber), it is the one who does not do well cleaning his hands with ash (see footnote 5), but does well rubbing them.

  1. 1.أَيْ: وَيَكْمُلُ الْقَوْمُ الْأَكْلَ أَوْ يَنْتَهُونَ عَنْهُ. وَالظَّاهِرُ أَنَّ الْمَعْنَى: وَيَتَتَامُّ الْقَوْمُ أَيْ يَتَكَامَلُونَ عَلَى الْأَكْلِ، أَوْ يَكْمُلُ عَدَدُهُمْ. وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ.

    That is, the people complete the eating or finish it. The apparent meaning is: 'and the people are completed' i.e., they all come together to eat, or their number is completed. And God knows best.

  2. 2.أَرُزَّةٌ: طَعَامٌ مِنَ الْأَرُزِّ يُطْبَخُ.

    A dish made of rice that is cooked.

  3. 3.السَّعْفَةُ: وَرَقَةُ النَّخْلِ، أَوْ جَرِيدَةٌ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ.

    The palm leaf, or a branch of the palm.

  4. 4.الْوَطَرُ: الْحَاجَةُ، وَالْمُرَادُ: إِذَا قَضَى حَاجَتَهُ مِنَ الْمُرُورِ أَوِ الِاجْتِيَازِ.

    Need; the meaning is: when he has satisfied his need of passing through.

  5. 5.الْأُشْنَانُ: نَبَاتٌ يُسْتَعْمَلُ لِتَنْظِيفِ الْيَدَيْنِ، وَهُوَ مَعْرُوفٌ عِنْدَ الْعَرَبِ.

    A plant used for cleaning hands, well-known among the Arabs.
