وَهٰذَاand thisإِذَاwhenاسْتَحَالَit turnsخَلًّاvinegar،,
And this is when it turns into vinegar.
وَأَكْثَرُand mostذٰلِكَof thatأَنْis thatيَحُولَit changesعَنِfromالنَّبِيذِthe wine،,وَلَاand notيَصِيرُit becomesإِلَىtoالْخَلِّvinegar۔.
And most often it changes from wine and does not become vinegar.
وَإِنْand ifسَلِمَit remains safe،,وَأَعُوذُand I seek refugeبِاللهِwith God،,وَجَادَand it is excellentوَصَفَاand clear،,لَمْnotنَجِدْwe findبُدًّاalternativeمِنْfromشُرْبِهِdrinking it،,وَلَمْand notتَطِبْit becomes pleasantأَنْفُسُنَاour soulsبِتَرْكِهِwith leaving it۔.
And if it remains safe, and I seek refuge with God, and it is excellent and clear, we find no alternative but to drink it, and our souls do not delight in leaving it.
فَإِنْfor ifقَعَدْتُI sitفِيinالْبَيْتِthe houseأَشْرَبُI drinkمِنْهُfrom it،,لَمْnotيُمْكِنْit is possibleإِلَّاexceptبِتَرْكِby leavingسُلَافِ1the pure wineالْفَارِسِيِّPersianالْمُعَسَّلِhoneyed،,وَالدَّجَاجِand the chickensالْمُسَمَّنِfattened،,وَجِدَاءِand the goatsكَسْكَرَ2Kaskar،,وَفَاكِهَةِand fruits ofالْجَبَلِthe mountain،,وَالنَّقْلِand the dried fruitsالْهَشِّfresh،,وَالرَّيْحَانِand the basilالْغَضِّfresh،,عِنْدَwithمَنْone whoلَاnotيَغِيضُdiminishesمَالُهُhis wealth،,وَلَاand notتَنْقَطِعُceasesمَادَّتُهُhis supply،,وَعِنْدَand withمَنْone whoلَاnotيُبَالِيcaresعَلَىonأَيِّwhichقِطْرَيْهِ3of his two sidesسَقَطَhe falls،,مَعَwithفَوْتِthe lossالْحَدِيثِof the conversationالْمُؤْنِسِcomforting،,السَّمَاعِthe hearingالْحَسَنِpleasant۔.
For if I sit at home drinking it, it is only possible by leaving the Persian honeyed wine, the fattened chickens, the goats of Kaskar, the mountain fruits, the fresh dried fruits, and the fresh basil—with one whose wealth does not diminish and whose supply never runs out, and with one who does not care which side he falls on—along with the loss of comforting conversation and pleasant music.
وَعَلَىand moreoverأَنِّيthat IإِنْifجَلَسْتُI sitفِيinالْبَيْتِthe houseأَشْرَبُهُdrinking it،,لَمْnotيَكُنْit beلِيfor meبُدٌّalternativeمِنْfromوَاحِدٍone،,وَذٰلِكَand thatالْوَاحِدُthe oneلَاnotبُدَّavoidableلَهُfor himمِنْfromدِرْهَمِa dirhamلَحْمٍof meat،,وَمِنْand fromطَسُّوجِ4a tasoojنَقْلٍdried fruits،,وَقِيرَاطِand a qiratرَيْحَانٍof basil،,وَمِنْand fromأَبْرَازٍexcrementلِلْقِدْرِfor the pot،,وَمِنْand fromحَطَبٍfirewoodلِلْوَقُودِfor fuel۔.
And moreover, if I sit at home drinking it, I have no alternative from one companion, and that one inevitably requires a dirham of meat, a tasooj of dried fruits, a qirat of basil, and fuel for the pot, and firewood for burning.
وَهٰذَاand thisكُلُّهُall of itغُرْمٌloss،,وَهُوَand it isبَعْدَafterهٰذَاthisسُؤْمٌweariness،,وَحِرْفَةٌand a craft،,وَخُرُوجٌand departureمِنَfromالْعَادَةِthe habitالْحَسَنَةِgood،,فَإِنْfor ifكَانَwasذٰلِكَthatالنَّدِيمُthe companionغَيْرَnotمُوَافِقٍagreeable،,فَأَهْلُthen the peopleالْحَبْسِof prisonأَحْسَنُbetterحَالًاconditionمِنِّيthan me۔.
And all this is a loss, and after this it is weariness, a craft, and a departure from good habit; and if that companion is not agreeable, then the prisoners are in a better condition than me.
وَإِنْand ifكَانَhe wasوَأَعُوذُand I seek refugeبِاللهِwith God،,مُوَافِقًاagreeable،,فَقَدْthen indeedفَتَحَopenedاللهُGodعَلَىuponمَالِيmy wealthبَابًاa doorمِنَofالتَّلَفِdestruction،,لِأَنَّهُbecause heحِينَئِذٍthenيَسِيرُtravelsفِيinمَالِيmy wealthكَسَيْرِيlike my travelفِيinمَالِthe wealthمَنْof one whoهُوَhe isفَوْقِيabove me۔.
And if he is, and I seek refuge with God, agreeable, then God has opened a door of destruction upon my wealth, because he then travels through my wealth like my traveling through the wealth of one above me.
وَإِذَاand whenعَلِمَknowsالصَّدِيقُthe friendأَنَّthatعِنْدِيwith meزَائِرًاa visitorوَنَبِيذًاand wine،,دَقَّhe knocksالْبَابَthe door،,دَقَّknockالْمُدِلِّof the confident۔.
And when the friend knows that I have a visitor and wine, he knocks the door, the knock of the confident.
فَإِنْand ifحَجَبْنَاهُwe screen himفَبَلَاءٌthen it is affliction،,وَإِنْand ifأَدْخَلْنَاهُwe let him inفَشَقَاءٌthen it is misery۔.
If we screen him off, it is an affliction, and if we let him in, it is misery.
وَإِنْand ifبَدَاit appearsلِيto meفِيinاسْتِحْسَانِappreciatingحَدِيثِthe talkالنَّاسِof people،,كَمَاjust asيَسْتَحْسِنُهُhe appreciates itمِنِّيfrom meمَنْone whoأَكُونُI amعِنْدَهُwith him،,فَقَدْthen indeedشَارَكْتُI have sharedالْمُسْرِفِينَthe extravagant،,وَفَارَقْتُand I have partedإِخْوَانِيmy brothersمِنَfromالْمُصْلِحِينَthe reformers،,وَصِرْتُand I have becomeمِنْfromإِخْوَانِthe brothersالشَّيَاطِينِof the devils۔.
And if I take pleasure in appreciating people's talk, just as he from whom I am appreciates it, then I have shared with the extravagant, parted from my brothers among the reformers, and become one of the brothers of the devils.
فَإِذَاand whenصِرْتُI have becomeكَذٰلِكَlike that،,فَقَدْthen indeedذَهَبَgoneكَسْبِيmy earningsمِنْfromمَالِthe wealthغَيْرِيof others،,وَصَارَand it becomesغَيْرِيothersيَكْسِبُearnمِنِّيfrom me۔.
And when I become like that, then my earnings from others' wealth are gone, and others begin to earn from me.

And if I were tried with one of them, I could not stand it, so how when I am tried with giving but not taking?
أَعُوذُI seek refugeبِاللهِwith Godمِنَfromالْخِذْلَانِthe abandonmentبَعْدُafter۔.
I seek refuge with God from abandonment after [all this].
