العِصْمَةُ1The immunity،,وَمِنَand fromالحَوْرِthe changeبَعْدَafterالكَوْرِ2the turban..
The immunity, and from the change after the turban.
لَوْIfكَانَit wereهَذَاthisفِيinالحَدَاثَةِ3youthكَانَit would beأَهْوَنَeasier..
If this were in youth, it would be easier.
هَذَاThisالدُّوشَابُ4grape syrupدَسِيسٌis a secretمِنَfromالحِرْفَةِcraftiness،,وَكَيْدٌand a schemeمِنَfromالشَّيْطَانِSatan،,وَخَدْعَةٌand a deceptionمِنَfromالحَسُودِthe envious..
This grape syrup is a secret from craftiness, a scheme from Satan, and a deception from the envious.
وَهُوَAnd it isالحَلَاوَةُthe sweetnessالَّتِيthatتُعْقِبُfollowsالمَرَارَةَbitterness..
And it is the sweetness that follows bitterness.
مَاWhatأَخْوَفَنِيmakes me fearأَنْthatيَكُونَbeأَبُوAbuسُلَيْمَانَSulaimanقَدْhasمَلَّbecame wearyمُنَادَمَتِيof my companionship،,فَهُوَso heيَحْتَالُdevisesلِيfor meالحِيَلَtricks..
What makes me fear is that Abu Sulaiman has become weary of my companionship, so he devises tricks for me.
وَكُنَّاAnd we wereمَرَّةًonceمَوْضِعَin a placeحُشْمَةٍof modesty،,وَفِيand inجَمَاعَةٍa groupكَثِيرَةٍlarge،,وَالْقَوْمُand the peopleسُكُوتٌsilent،,وَالْمَجْلِسُand the gatheringكَبِيرٌlarge..
And we were once in a place of modesty, in a large group, with the people silent and the gathering large.
وَهُوَAnd heبَعِيدُfarالمَكَانِin placeمِنِّيfrom me..
And he was far in place from me.
فَأَقْبَلَThen he turnedعَلَيَّto meالمَكِّيُّthe Meccanوَقَالَand said،,وَالْقَوْمُwhile the peopleيَسْمَعُونَhearing::
Then the Meccan turned to me and said, while the people were hearing:
يَاOأَبَاAbuعُثْمَانَUthmanمَنْwhoأَبْخَلُis most stingyأَصْحَابِنَاamong our companions؟?
O Abu Uthman, who is the most stingy among our companions?
قُلْتُI said::أَبُوAbuالْهُذَيْلِal-Hudhayl..
I said: Abu al-Hudhayl.
قَالَHe said::ثُمَّthenمَنْwho؟?
He said: Then who?
قُلْتُI said::صَاحِبٌa companionلَنَاof oursلَاnotأُسَمِّيهِI name him..
I said: A companion of ours whom I do not name.
قَالَHe saidالحِزَامِيُّal-Hizamiمِنْfromبَعِيدٍfar::إِنَّمَاonlyيَعْنِينِيhe means me..
Al-Hizami said from afar: He only means me.
ثُمَّThenقَالَhe said::حَسَدْتُمْYou enviedلِلْمُقْتَصِدِينَthe frugalتَدْبِيرَهُمْtheir management،,وَنَمَاءَand growthأَمْوَالِهِمْ5of their wealth،,وَدَوَامَand permanenceنِعْمَتِهِمْof their blessing،,فَالْتَمَسْتُمْso you soughtتَهْجِينَهُمْ6to vilify themبِهَذَاwith thisاللَّقَبِlabel،,وَأَدْخَلْتُمُand you broughtالمَكْرَdeceitعَلَيْهِمْupon themبِهَذَاwith thisالنَّبْزِ7nickname..
Then he said: You envied the frugal for their management, growth of wealth, and permanence of blessing, so you sought to vilify them with this label, and you brought deceit upon them with this nickname.
تَظْلِمُونَYou wrongالمُتْلِفَthe spenderلِمَالِهِfor his wealthبِاسْمِwith the nameالجُودِof generosity،,إِدَارَةًturningلَهُhimعَنْaway fromشَأْنِهِhis matter،,وَتَظْلِمُونَand you wrongالمُصْلِحَthe one who savesلِمَالِهِhis wealthبِاسْمِwith the nameالبُخْلِof stinginess،,حَسَدًاout of envyمِنْكُمْfrom youلِنِعْمَتِهِfor his blessing،,فَلَاso neitherالمُفْسِدُthe corruptيَنْجُوescapes،,وَلَاnorالمُصْلِحُthe righteousيَسْلَمُis safe..
You wrong the spender with the name of generosity, turning him away from his matter, and you wrong the saver with the name of stinginess, out of envy for his blessing, so neither the corrupt escapes nor the righteous is safe.

[Narration of Khalid ibn Abdullah al-Qasri:]
قَالَHe saidأَبُوAbuعُبَيْدَةَUbaida::بَلَغَreachedخَالِدَKhalidبْنَibnعَبْدِAbdاللهِAllahالقَسْرِيَّal-Qasriأَنَّthatالنَّاسَthe peopleيَرْمُونَهُaccuse him..
Abu Ubaida said: It reached Khalid ibn Abdullah al-Qasri that the people accuse him.

Meaning the infallibility of the prophets, peace be upon them.
- 2.مَثَلٌ: أَيْ بَعْدَ العِزِّ وَالرِّفْعَةِ إِلَى الذُّلِّ وَالانْحِطَاطِ
A proverb: i.e., after honor and elevation to humiliation and degradation.
- 3.الحَدَاثَةُ: الصِّبَا وَسِنُّ الشَّبَابِ
Youth: childhood and the age of young adulthood.
- 4.الدُّوشَابُ: شَرَابٌ مَعْقُودٌ مِنْ عَصِيرِ العِنَبِ
Dushab: a syrup made from grape juice.
- 5.أَيْ لِأَنَّهُمْ يُصْلِحُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فَتَنْمُو
Because they manage their wealth well, so it grows.
- 6.تَهْجِينَهُمْ: تَقْبِيحَهُمْ وَعَيْبَهُمْ
To vilify them: to make them seem ugly and to find fault with them.
- 7.النَّبْزُ: اللَّقَبُ
Nickname: the label.
