جَلِيَّةٌClearفِيinكِتَابِهِ،his book,

Clear in his book,

إِذْsinceإِنَّindeedالْجَاحِظَAl-Jahizتَجَرَّدَdivestedمِنْhimself ofذَاتِهِ،his self,

since Al-Jahiz divested himself of his self,

وَتَرَكَand leftالْبُخَلَاءَthe misersأَنْفُسَهُمْthemselvesيَتَحَدَّثُونَspeakingعَنْaboutقَضَايَاهُمْ،their issues,

and left the misers themselves speaking about their issues,

دُونَwithoutأَنْthatيُدْخِلَhe introduceنَفْسَهُhimselfشَرِيكاًas a partnerأَوْorمُوَجِّهاًa directorفِيinالصُّورَةِ،the picture,

without introducing himself as a partner or a director in the picture,

أَوْorفِيinالْمَوْضُوعِ.the subject.

or in the subject.

وَلَمْAnd did notتَجْرِrunأَقَاصِيصُهُhis talesعَلَىonوَتِيرَةٍa paceوَاحِدَةٍ؛single;

And his tales did not run on a single pace;

بَلْratherكَانَتْeach wasكُلٌّeachمِنْهَاof themتَطْغَىsurpassingعَلَىtheالْأُخْرَىotherمِنْinحَيْثِterms ofالنَّكْهَةِflavorوَالْمَوْضُوعِsubjectوَالْأُسْلُوبِ.and style.

rather, each of them surpassed the other in terms of flavor, subject, and style.

وَيَقِينُنَاAnd our certaintyأَنَّis thatأُسْلُوبَهُhis styleالصَّامِتَsilentهَذَا،this,

And our certainty is that this silent style of his,

كَانَwasمِنَone ofالْأَسَالِيبِthe methodsالَّتِيthatأَدَّتْledإِلَىtoنَجَاحِthe success ofنَوَادِرِهِhis anecdotesوَتَحْلِيلِand the analysis ofنَفْسِيَّاتِthe psyches ofبُخَلَائِهِ.his misers.

was one of the methods that led to the success of his anecdotes and the analysis of the psyches of his misers.

لَقَدْIndeedرَسَمَdrewأَبُوAbuعُثْمَانَUthmanبُخَلَاءَهُhis misersبِرِيشَتِهِwith his brushالْمَاهِرَةِskillfulالسَّاخِرَةِsatiricalالَّتِيwhichيَصْعُبُis difficultعَلَىforالْمُتَقَدِّمِينَthe predecessorsوَالْمُتَأَخِّرِينَand successorsاسْتِعْمَالُهَا،to use it,

Indeed, Abu Uthman drew his misers with his skillful, satirical brush which predecessors and successors find difficult to use,

أَوْorإِجَادَةُto masterالتَّصْوِيرِdepictingبِهَا،with it,

or to master depicting with it,

لِأَنَّهَاbecause itرِيشَةٌis a brushمُتَمَيِّزَةٌdistinctiveلَهَاhavingخَصَائِصُهَاits characteristicsالْأُسْلُوبِيَّةُstylisticوَالذَّوْقِيَّةُaestheticوَالنَّفْسِيَّةُand psychologicalالَّتِيthatطَبَعَتْimprintedأَدَبَthe literature ofالْجَاحِظِAl-Jahizبِطَابِعٍwith a stampخَاصٍّspecialمُتَفَرِّدٍ.and unique.

because it is a distinctive brush with stylistic, aesthetic, and psychological characteristics that imprinted the literature of Al-Jahiz with a special, unique stamp.

كَانَWasالْجَاحِظُAl-Jahizفِيinكِتَابِthe book of«الْبُخَلَاءِ»"Al-Bukhala"فَنَّاناًan artistبِطَبْعِهِby natureاعْتَمَدَwho relied onلَوْناًa colorأَسَاسِيّاً،primary,

Al-Jahiz in the book "Al-Bukhala" was an artist by nature who relied on a primary color,

وَهُوَand itالذَّاتُis the selfالْبَشَرِيَّةُ.human.

and that is the human self.

فَغَاصَSo he doveإِلَىintoأَعْمَاقِهَا،its depths,

So he dove into its depths,

يَسْتَنْبِطُextractingمَاwhatفِيinجَوَانِبِهَاits aspectsمِنْofعُقَدٍcomplexesوَغَرَابَةٍstrangenessوَغُمُوضٍ.and ambiguity.

extracting the complexes, strangeness, and ambiguity within its aspects.

فَهُوَFor heلَمْdid notيَقُصُّnarrateحِكَايَاتِهِhis storiesلِإِثَارَةِto provokeتِلْكَthatالْغَرَابَةِ،strangeness,

For he did not narrate his stories to provoke that strangeness,

وَإِنَّمَاbut ratherلِلدَّلَالَةِto indicateعَلَىthoseتِلْكَpsychologicalالْمَوَاقِفِattitudesالنَّفْسِيَّةِand complicationsوَالتَّعْقِيدَاتِthatالَّتِيthe misersكَانَused toيُعَانِيهَاsuffer fromالْبُخَلَاءُinفِيhis era.عَصْرِهِ.era.

but rather to indicate those psychological attitudes and complications that the misers suffered from in his era.

وَبِالْإِضَافَةِAnd in additionإِلَىtoذَلِكَ،that,

And in addition to that,

فَإِنَّنَاweلَاdo notنَغْفُلُoverlookالْأُسْلُوبَthe theatricalالْمَسْرَحِيَّstyleالَّذِيwhichتَحَقَّقَwas achievedلَهُfor itفِيinكُلِّeveryنَادِرَةٍ،anecdote,

we do not overlook the theatrical style that was achieved in every anecdote,

وَخَاصَّةًand especiallyفِيinأُقُوصُوصَةِthe short story of«مَرْيَمَ"Maryamالصَّنَّاعِ»the Artisan"وَand«شَيْخِ"Sheikhالنَّخَّالَةِ»Al-Nakhala"وَand«مُعَاذَةَ"Mu'adhahالْعَنْبَرِيَّةِ»،Al-Anbariyya",

and especially in the short stories of "Maryam the Artisan", "Sheikh Al-Nakhala", and "Mu'adhah Al-Anbariyya",

فَإِنَّنَاfor weوَبَحَقٍّtrulyنَجِدُfindأَنْفَسَنَاourselvesأَمَامَin front ofخَشَبَةِa stageمَسْرَحٍof a theaterتَقُومُupon whichعَلَيْهَاstandهَذِهِtheseالشَّخْصِيَّاتُcharactersوَتَنْهَضُand riseوَتَتَحَرَّكُand moveكَأَنَّهَاas if theyمِنْare ofلَحْمٍfleshوَدَمٍ.and blood.

for we truly find ourselves before a theater stage upon which these characters stand, rise, and move as if they were of flesh and blood.

وَمِمَّاAnd among whatيَنْبَغِيis appropriateأَنْtoنَقُولَهُsay itفِيregardingكِتَابِthe book of«الْبُخَلَاءِ»"Al-Bukhala"أَنَّis thatصَاحِبَهُits authorلَمْdid notيَصِلْreachمِنْthroughخِلَالِهِitإِلَىtoغَايَةٍgoalوَاحِدَةٍ،single,

And among what should be said regarding the book "Al-Bukhala" is that its author did not reach through it a single goal,

بَلْratherبَلَغَhe reachedبِهِwith itغَايَاتٍgoalsأُخْرَىotherأَكْثَرَmoreشُمُولِيَّةًcomprehensiveوَإِحَاطَةًand encompassingبِدِرَاسَةِin studyingالْفَرْدِthe individualوَالْمُجْتَمَعِsocietyوَالْإِنْسَانِ.and man.

rather, he reached with it other goals that are more comprehensive and encompassing in studying the individual, society, and man.

فَإِذَاSo ifكَانَwasكِتَابُthe book of«الْبُخَلَاءِ»"Al-Bukhala"قِمَّةًa peakفِيinالنَّقْدِcriticismالِاجْتِمَاعِيِّsocialوَالْأَخْلَاقِيِّ،and moral,

So if the book "Al-Bukhala" was a peak in social and moral criticism,

وَصُورَةًand a pictureتَرْسُمُdepictingحَقِيقَةَthe reality ofطَبَقَةٍa classمُعَيَّنَةٍ،specific,

and a picture depicting the reality of a specific class,

فَإِنَّthenكُتُبَthe books ofالْجَاحِظِAl-Jahizكُلَّهَاall of themتُوَازِيparallelقِمَّةَthe peak of«الْبُخَلَاءِ»"Al-Bukhala"شُمُوخاً.in loftiness.

then all the books of Al-Jahiz parallel the peak of "Al-Bukhala" in loftiness.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisقَالَsaidابْنُIbnالْعَمِيدِ:Al-Amid:

And for this Ibn Al-Amid said:

«كُتُبُ"The books ofالْجَاحِظِAl-Jahizتُعَلِّمُteachالْعَقْلَthe intellectأَوَّلاً،first,

"The books of Al-Jahiz teach the intellect first,

وَالْأَدَبَand literatureثَانِياً»secondly"

and literature secondly"
