From the overwhelming joy, it changed him and his master ‘Maḥlūl’.
عَلِيُّAliالْأَعْمَىthe blind
Ali the Blind
دَخَلَenteredعَلِيٌّAliالْأَعْمَىthe blindعَلَىuponيُوسُفَYusufبْنِibnكُلِّeveryخَيْرٍgood،,وَقَدْand indeedتَغَدَّىhe had eaten lunch،,فَقَالَand he said::
Ali the Blind entered upon Yusuf ibn Kulli Khair, who had already eaten lunch, and he said:
«يَاOجَارِيَةُgirlهَاتِيbringلِأَبِيfor Abuالْحَسَنِal-Hasanغَدَاءًlunch»..
“O girl, bring Abu al-Hasan some lunch.”
قَالَhe said::«لَمْnotيَبْقَremainعِنْدَنَاwith usشَيْءٌanything»..
He said: “We have nothing left.”
قَالَhe said::«هَاتِيbring،,وَيْلَكِwoe to you،,مَاwhateverكَانَis،,فَلَيْسَfor notمِنْfromأَبِيAbuالْحَسَنِal-Hasanحَشْمَةٌ1shyness»..
He said: “Bring, woe to you, whatever there is, for Abu al-Hasan has no shyness.”
وَلَمْand notيَشُكَّdoubtعَلِيٌّAliأَنَّهُthat heسَيُؤْتَىwill be broughtبِرَغِيفٍa loafمُلَطَّخٍsmeared،,وَبِرُقَاقَةٍand a thin breadمُلَطَّخَةٍsmeared،,وَبِسُكَّرٍand sugarوَبَقِيَّةِand remainderمَرَقٍbroth،,وَبِعِرْقٍand a boneوَبِفَضْلَةِand leftoverشِوَاءٍroast meat،,وَبِبَقَايَاand remnantsمَاwhatيَفْضُلُremainsفِيinالْجَامَاتِ2the bowlsوَالسُّكُرُّجَاتِ3and the small bowls..
Ali did not doubt that he would be brought a smeared loaf, a smeared thin bread, sugar, leftover broth, a bone, leftover roast, and remnants of what remains in the bowls and small bowls.
فَجَاءَتْand she cameبِطَبَقٍwith a trayلَيْسَnotعَلَيْهِon itإِلَّاexceptرَغِيفُa loafأَرُزٍّof riceقَاحِلٍ4dry،,لَاnotشَيْءَthingمَعَهُwith itغَيْرُهُother than it..
She came with a tray on which there was nothing but a dry rice loaf, with nothing else with it.
فَلَمَّاand whenوَضَعُواthey placedالْخِوَانَthe dining tableبَيْنَbetweenيَدَيْهِhis hands،,فَأَجَالَand he movedيَدَهُhis handفِيهِin it،,وَهُوَwhile heأَعْمَىblind،,فَلَمْand notيَقَعْfallإِلَّاexceptعَلَىonذَلِكَthatالرَّغِيفِloaf..
When they placed the dining table before him, he moved his hand over it, being blind, and his hand landed only on that loaf.
وَقَدْand indeedعَلِمَhe knewأَنَّthatقَوْلَهُhis saying::«لَيْسَnotمِنْهُfrom himحَشْمَةٌshyness»لَاnotيَكُونُbeإِلَّاexceptمَعَwithالْقَلِيلِthe little..
He knew that his saying “He has no shyness” is only said with little food.
فَلَمْand notيَظُنَّhe thinkأَنَّthatالْأَمْرَthe matterبَلَغَreachedذَلِكَthat،,فَلَمَّاand whenلَمْnotيَجِدْhe findغَيْرَهُother than it،,قَالَhe said::«وَيْلَكُمْwoe to youوَلَاand notكُلُّallهَذَاthisبِمَرَّةٍat all،,رَفَعْتُمُyou removedالْحَشْمَةَthe shynessكُلَّهَاall of it..
He did not think that the matter had reached that point, and when he found nothing else, he said: “Woe to you! Not even all this at all? You have removed all shyness.”
وَالْكَلَامُand the speechلَمْnotيَقَعْoccurإِلَّاexceptعَلَىonهَذَاthis»؟?
And the speech was only about this?
الْغَزَّالُal-Ghazzal::
Al-Ghazzal:
حَدَّثَنِيtold meمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُibnحَسَّانَHassanالْأَسْوَدُal-Aswad،,قَالَhe said::أَخْبَرَنِيinformed meزَكَرِيَّاZakariyyaالْقَطَّانُal-Qattanقَالَhe said::
Muhammad ibn Hassan al-Aswad told me, he said: Zakariyya al-Qattan informed me, he said:
كَانَwasلِلْغَزَّالِfor al-Ghazzalقِطْعَةُa pieceأَرْضٍof landقُدَّامَin front ofحَانُوتِهِhis shop..
Al-Ghazzal had a piece of land in front of his shop.
فَأَكْرَى6and he rentedنِصْفَهَاhalf of itمِنْfromسَمَّاكٍa fishmonger،,يَسْقُطُfallsعَنْهُfrom himمَاwhatاسْتَطَاعَhe couldمِنْofمَئُونَةِexpenseالْكِرَاءِthe rent..
He rented half of it to a fishmonger, who was excused as much as possible from the rent expenses.

- 1.الْحَشْمَةُ: الْحَيَاءُ وَالِاسْتِحْيَاءُ، وَالْمَقْصُودُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَسْتَحِي مِنْ قِلَّةِ الطَّعَامِ.
Al-ḥashmah: shyness and modesty; the meaning is that he is not ashamed of the scarcity of food.
- 2.الْجَامَاتُ: جَمْعُ جَامَةٍ، وَهِيَ الْإِنَاءُ الَّذِي يُوضَعُ فِيهِ الطَّعَامُ.
Al-jāmāt: plural of jāmah, a vessel in which food is placed.
- 3.السُّكُرُّجَاتُ: جَمْعُ سُكُرُّجَةٍ، وَهِيَ وِعَاءٌ صَغِيرٌ يُوضَعُ فِيهِ الشَّيْءُ الْقَلِيلُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ أَوِ الشَّرَابِ.
Al-sukrujjāt: plural of sukrujjah, a small vessel in which a small amount of food or drink is placed.
- 4.الْقَاحِلُ: الْيَابِسُ الَّذِي لَا دَسَمَ فِيهِ.
Al-qāḥil: dry, having no grease or moistness.
- 5.أَجَالَ: حَرَّكَ وَقَلَّبَ.
Ajāla: he moved and turned around.
- 6.أَكْرَى: آجَرَ.
Akrā: he rented out.
