وَقَالَAnd saidالنَّبِيُّthe Prophetصَلَّىmay peace beاللَّهُupon himعَلَيْهِandوَسَلَّمَblessings

And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

«لَا"Do notيَقُولَنَّdefinitely sayأَحَدُكُمْanyone of you:مَاwhatشَاءَwillsاللَّهُGodوَمَاand whatشَاءَwillsمُحَمَّدٌMuhammad.

"Let not any of you say: What God wills and what Muhammad wills.

وَلَكِنْButمَاwhatشَاءَwillsاللَّهُGodثُمَّthenشَاءَwillsمُحَمَّدٌ»Muhammad."

Rather: What God wills, then what Muhammad wills."

وَقَالَAnd saidلَهُto himرَجُلٌa man:مَاwhatشَاءَwillsاللَّهُGodوَشِئْتَand you willed.

And a man said to him: What God wills and you will.

فَقَالَSo he said«أَجَعَلْتَنِي"Have you made meلِلَّهِto Godنِدًّا؟!an equal?!بَلْRatherمَاwhatشَاءَwillsاللَّهُGodوَحْدَهُ»alone."

"Have you made me an equal to God? Rather, what God alone wills."

وَقَالَAnd he said:«لَا"Do notتُطْرُونِيpraise me excessivelyكَمَاasأَطْرَتِpraised excessivelyالنَّصَارَىthe ChristiansعِيسَىJesusابْنَthe son ofمَرْيَمَMary,

And he said: "Do not praise me excessively as the Christians praised Jesus the son of Mary,

إِنَّمَاindeedأَنَاI amعَبْدُa servant ofاللَّهِGod,فَقُولُواso say:عَبْدُServant ofاللَّهِGodوَرَسُولُهُ»and His Messenger."

I am only a servant of God, so say: The servant of God and His Messenger."

وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseلَاit is notيَجُوزُpermissibleلِأَحَدٍfor anyoneأَنْthatيَحْلِفَhe swearsبِتُرْبَةِby the soil ofأَبِيهِ،his father,

And likewise, it is not permissible for anyone to swear by the soil of his father,

وَلَاnorبِحَيَاةِby the life ofأَبِيهِhis father,وَلَاnorبِحَيَاةِby the life ofنَفْسِهِ،himself,

nor by the life of his father, nor by the life of himself,

وَلَاand it is notيَجُوزُpermissibleلِأَحَدٍfor anyoneمِنْofخَلْقِthe creation ofاللَّهِGodأَنْthatيَحْلِفَhe swears

and it is not permissible for anyone of God's creation to swear
