وَقَالَAndتَعَالَى:He said, Most High:
And He, the Most High, said:
{قُلِSayادْعُواinvokeالَّذِينَthoseزَعَمْتُمْyou claimedمِنْbesidesدُونِهِHim,
Say, Invoke those you claimed besides Him,
فَلَاthen they do notيَمْلِكُونَpossessكَشْفَthe removal ofالضُّرِّadversityعَنْكُمْfrom youوَلَاand neitherتَحْوِيلًاtransfer.
then they do not possess the ability to remove adversity from you or to transfer it.
••أُولَئِكَThoseالَّذِينَwhomيَدْعُونَthey invoke -
Those whom they invoke -
يَبْتَغُونَseekإِلَىtoرَبِّهِمُtheir Lordالْوَسِيلَةَthe means -
seeking the means to their Lord -
أَيُّهُمْwhich of themأَقْرَبُis nearest -
which of them is nearest -
وَيَرْجُونَand they hope forرَحْمَتَهُHis mercyوَيَخَافُونَand they fearعَذَابَهُHis punishment.
and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment.
إِنَّIndeedعَذَابَthe punishment ofرَبِّكَyour Lordكَانَisمَحْذُورًا}something to be feared.
Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.

قَالَSaidعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِMasoud:مَسْعُودٍ:Masoud:
Abdullah bin Masoud said:
كَانَThere wereأَقْوَامٍgroups of people(١)(1)يَدْعُونَinvokingالْمَلَائِكَةَthe angels,وَعُزَيْرًاEzra,وَالْمَسِيحَ،and the Messiah.
There were groups of people invoking the angels, Ezra, and the Messiah.
فَقَالَSo saidاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَى:the Most High:
So Allah, the Most High, said:
هؤلاءTheseالذينwhomتدعونyou invokeهمtheyيتقربونseek nearnessإليّto Meكماjust asتتقربونyou seek nearnessإليّ،to Me,
These whom you invoke, they seek nearness to Me just as you seek nearness to Me,
ويرجونand they hope forرحمتيMy mercyكماjust asترجونyou hope forرحمتي،My mercy,
and they hope for My mercy just as you hope for My mercy,
ويخافونand they fearعذابيMy punishmentكماjust asتخافونyou fearعذابيMy punishment(٢)(2)..
and they fear My punishment just as you fear My punishment (2).
وَقَالَAnd saidاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَى:the Most High:
And Allah, the Most High, said:
{مَاIt is notكَانَbefittingلِبَشَرٍfor a humanأَنْthatيُؤْتِيَهُHe should give himاللَّهُAllahالْكِتَابَthe Bookوَالْحُكْمَand wisdomوَالنُّبُوَّةَand prophethood
It is not for a human [prophet] that Allah should give him the Book and wisdom and prophethood
ثُمَّand thenيَقُولَhe saysلِلنَّاسِto the people,كُونُواBeعِبَادًاservantsلِيto meمِنْinstead ofدُونِbesidesاللَّهِAllah,
and then he says to the people, "Be servants to me rather than Allah,"
وَلَكِنْbut ratherكُونُواbeرَبَّانِيِّينَpious scholarsبِمَاbecause of whatكُنْتُمْyou used to
but rather, "Be pious scholars because of what you used to
