وَلاAnd do notتَجْعَلُواmakeبُيُوتَكُمْyour housesقُبُورًاgraves
And do not make your houses graves
وَصَلُّواand prayعَلَيَّupon meحَيْثُwhereverمَاyouكُنْتُمْare
and send blessings upon me wherever you are
فَإِنَّfor indeedصَلَاتَكُمْyour prayersتَبْلُغُنِيreach me
for indeed your prayers reach me
وَكَانَتْAnd wasحُجْرَةُthe chamber ofعَائِشَةَAishaرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهَاherخَارِجَةًoutsideعَنْofمَسْجِدِهِhis mosque
And the chamber of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, was outside his mosque
فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَit wasفِيinزَمَانِthe time ofالْوَلِيدِAl-Walidبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِAl-Malik
So when it was the time of Al-Walid ibn Abd Al-Malik
اشْتَرَىhe boughtحُجَرَthe chambers ofأَزْوَاجِthe wives ofالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِand grant him peaceوَسَلَّمَpeace
he bought the chambers of the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace
مِنْfromقِبْلِيِّthe southern side ofالْمَسْجِدِthe mosqueوَمِنْand fromشَرْقِيِّهِits eastern side
from the southern side of the mosque and from its eastern side
وَهَدَّهَاand demolished themوَزَادَهَاand added themفِيtoالْمَسْجِدِthe mosque
and demolished them and added them to the mosque
وَسَدَّAnd he blockedحُجْرَةَthe chamber ofعَائِشَةَAisha
And he blocked the chamber of Aisha
وَبَنَىand builtعَلَيْهَاover itحَائِطًاa wallبَعْدَafterحَائِطٍwall
and built over it wall after wall
وَحَرَّفَand slantedحَائِطَهَاits wallعَنِaway fromالْقِبْلَةِthe Qibla
and slanted its wall away from the Qibla
وَجَعَلَand madeمُؤَخَّرَهَاits back partمُسَنَّمًاsloped
and made its back part sloped
كُلُّAllذَلِكَof thatلِئَلَّاso thatيُصَلَّىprayer is not performedفِيهَاin itوَلَاnorإِلَيْهَاtoward it
all of that so that prayer is not performed in it nor toward it
وَمَعَAnd withهَذَاthisلَقَدْindeedأَنْكَرَobjectedسَعِيدُSaeedبْنُson ofالْمُسَيَّبِAl-Musayyibوَغَيْرُهُand others
And with this, indeed Saeed ibn Al-Musayyib and others objected
عَلَىtoالْوَلِيدِAl-Walidفِيregardingهَدْمِthe demolition ofالْحُجَرِthe chambersوَإِدْخَالِهَاand their inclusionفِيinالْمَسْجِدِthe mosque
to Al-Walid regarding the demolition of the chambers and their inclusion in the mosque
ثُمَّThenإِنَّهُheصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِand grant him peaceوَسَلَّمَpeaceنَهَىforbadeعَنِfromالصَّلَاةِprayerعِنْدَatالْقُبُورِthe gravesوَإِلَيْهَاand toward them
Then he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade prayer at the graves and toward them
فَعَنْSo fromأَبِيAbuمَرْثَدٍMarthadالْغَنَوِيِّAl-Ghanawiقَالَwho said
So from Abu Marthad Al-Ghanawi who said
قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllahصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِand grant him peaceوَسَلَّمَpeace
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said
لَاDo notتُصَلُّواprayإِلَىtowardالْقُبُورِthe gravesوَلَاand do notتَجْلِسُواsit
Do not pray toward the graves, and do not sit
أَخْرَجَهُIt was collected byأَحْمَدُAhmad١٤14٤٠٣403وَأَبُوand AbuدَاوُدَDawud٢٠٤٢2042
It was collected by Ahmad (14/403) and Abu Dawud (2042)
مِنْfromحَدِيثِthe narration ofأَبِيAbuهُرَيْرَةَHurayrahرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُhim
from the narration of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him
صَحَّحَهُIt was authenticated byالنَّوَوِيُّAl-NawawiفِيinرِيَاضِRiyadالصَّالِحِينَAl-Salihin١٤٠١1401وَالْأَلْبَانِيُّand Al-AlbaniفِيinسُنَنِSunanأَبِيAbuدَاوُدَDawud
It was authenticated by Al-Nawawi in Riyad Al-Salihin (1401) and Al-Albani in Sunan Abu Dawud
وَمَاAnd whateverبَيْنَis betweenالْمَعْقُوفَتَيْنِthe bracketsزِيَادَةٌis an additionمِنْfromمُسْنَدِMusnadالْإِمَامِImamأَحْمَدَAhmad
And whatever is between the brackets is an addition from Musnad Imam Ahmad
