فَقَدْFor indeedنَهَىforbadeرَسُولُMessenger ofاللَّهِAllahصَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

For indeed the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him,

قَبْلَbeforeمَوْتِهِhis deathبِخَمْسٍby five (days)

five days before his death,

أَنْthatيَتَّخِذُواthey should takeالْقُبُورَthe gravesمَسَاجِدَas places of worship

to take graves as places of worship,

وَبَيَّنَand he explainedأَنَّthatالَّذِينَthose whoكَانُواwereقَبْلَنَاbefore us

and he explained that those before us

كَانُواused toيَتَّخِذُونَtakeقُبُورَgraves ofالْأَنْبِيَاءِthe prophetsوَالصَّالِحِينَand the righteousمَسَاجِدَas places of worship

used to take the graves of the prophets and the righteous as places of worship,

وَأَنَّهُand that heهُوَhimselfصَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

and that he, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him,

نَهَانَاforbade usأَنْfromنَتَّخِذَtakingالْقُبُورَthe gravesمَسَاجِدَas places of worship

forbade us from taking graves as places of worship;

لِئَلَّاlestيَعْتَقِدَsomeone believesأَحَدٌanyoneأَنَّthatهَذَاthisمِمَّاis from that whichيُقْتَدَىis followedبِهِمْin themفِيهِin it

lest anyone believe that this is something to be followed in regard to them,

فَإِنَّfor indeedاللَّهَAllahأَخْبَرَinformedعَنْهُمْabout themبِذَلِكَwith thatفِيinقَوْلِهِHis statement

for Allah has informed about them in His statement:

قَالَSaidالَّذِينَthose whoغَلَبُواprevailedعَلَىoverأَمْرِهِمْtheir affairلَنَتَّخِذَنَّWe will surely takeعَلَيْهِمْover themمَسْجِدًاa place of worship

“Those who prevailed over their affair said, 'We will surely take over them a place of worship.'”

ثُمَّThenإِنَّهُindeedصَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

Then indeed he, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him,

وَقْتَat the time ofلِقَاءِmeetingرَبِّهِhis Lord

at the time of meeting his Lord,

لَعَنَcursedالْكِتَابِيِّينَthe People of the Bookالَّذِينَwhoاتَّخَذُواtookالْقُبُورَthe gravesمَسَاجِدَas places of worship

cursed the People of the Book who took graves as places of worship;

لِيُعْتَبَرَso that it may be taken as a warningبِذَلِكَby thatوَلَاand notيُتَّخَذَbe takenقَبْرُهُhis graveوَلَاnorقَبْرُthe grave ofغَيْرِهِsomeone elseمَسْجِدًاas a place of worship

so that warning might be taken from that, and neither his grave nor the grave of anyone else be taken as a place of worship.

وَلَهَذَاAnd because of thisلَمَّاwhenقَبَضَهُtook himاللَّهُAllahإِلَىtoكَرَامَتِهِHis honor

And for this reason, when Allah took him to His honor,

دُفِنَhe was buriedفِيinبَيْتِهِhis houseوَلَمْand was notيُبْرَزْmade prominentقَبْرُهُhis grave

he was buried in his house and his grave was not made prominent;

لِئَلَّاlestيَقْصِدَهُintend itالنَّاسُthe peopleلِلصَّلَاةِfor prayerعِنْدَهُnear itوَيَتَّخِذُوهُand take itمَسْجِدًاas a place of worship

lest people intend to pray near it and take it as a place of worship,

فَإِنَّهُfor indeedقَدْit hasجَاءَcomeعَنْهُfrom himأَنَّهُthat heقَالَsaid

for indeed it has been reported from him that he said:

اللَّهُمَّO Allahلَاdo notتَجْعَلْmakeقَبْرِيmy graveوَثَنًاan idolيُعْبَدُthat is worshipped

“O Allah, do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped.”

وَقَالَAnd he said

And he said:

لَاDo notتَتَّخِذُواtakeقَبْرِيmy graveعِيدًاas a festival

“Do not take my grave as a festival.”
