So this state: they will stay for periods, then the punishment will remain forever and they will drink from the drinks of Hell.

And the second saying: that it is not determined '7/1', and those said: this does not indicate an end, because whenever a period passed, it was followed by a period. If he said: 'staying in it for ten periods, or five periods,' it would indicate an end. This is the saying of Ibn Qutaybah and others.

Abu Al-Faraj Ibn Al-Jawzi said: And this is the saying of Ibn Qutaybah and the majority, and its explanation is that the time of the people of Paradise and Hell is imagined as entering under numbers, as His saying: {Bukrah wa 'Ashiyyan} (morning and evening).

And like this, the words of Allah are included under the number, even if they do not have an end. It is said that this is forbidden, for what does not have an end cannot be included under the number. Only that which has a limited measure is included under the number. But if taking parts from its parts is included under the number, like the morning and evening, which is an amount of a day of the days of Paradise, and it is known by a light that appears to them, increases.
