Henry forgot the matter of the possibility of his injury by a gunfire, and watched the battle in a daze.

Wilson was extremely pale and his lips were trembling.

غَمْغَمَmumbledهنريHenryفِيinذُهُولٍastonishmentبَالِغٍ:extreme:«مَاWhatالْأَمْرُ؟!»is the matter?!'

And he ended his speech with a sigh that expressed his sadness over his condition, and he delivered a small package to Henry.

قَالَsaidهنري:Henry:«مَا الَّذِيWhat is that…»...

Henry said: What is that...?

تَوَقَّفَStoppedالرِّجَالُthe menعَلَىonحَافَّةِthe edge ofإِحْدَىone ofالْحَدَائِقِ،the gardens,حَيْثُwhereجَثَمُواthey squattedعَلَىonالْأَرْضِthe groundبَيْنَbetweenالْأَشْجَارِ،the trees,يُصَوِّبُونَaimingأَسْلِحَتَهُمْtheir weaponsنَحْوَtowardالْحُقُولِ،the fields,وَandيُحَاوِلُونَtryingالنَّظَرَto look atفِيمَاwhat isوَرَاءَbeyondالضَّبَابِ؛the fog;حَيْثُwhereاسْتَطَاعُواthey couldرُؤْيَةَseeرِجَالٍmenآخَرِينَothersيَرْكُضُونَrunningوَandبَعْضُهُمْsome of themيَصِيحُshoutingوَandيُلَوِّحُونَ.waving.

The men stopped on the edge of one of the gardens, where they squatted on the ground between the trees, aiming their weapons toward the fields, and trying to look at what is beyond the fog; where they could see other men running and some of them shouting and waving.

نَظَرَLookedرِجَالُthe men ofوَحْدَةِthe unit ofهنريHenryوَاسْتَمَعُواand listenedفِيinحِرْصٍ،eagerness,وَظَلُّواand they remainedمَشْغُولِينَbusyبِالْحَدِيثِtalkingعَنِaboutالشَّائِعَاتِthe rumorsالَّتِيthatسَمِعُوهَا.they heard.

The men of Henry's unit looked and listened with eagerness, and remained busy talking about the rumors that they heard.

قَالَSaidأَحَدُone ofالْرِجَالِthe men:قَابَلْتُI metأَحَدَone ofالْفِتْيَانِthe youthsمِنْfromوِلَايَةِthe state ofمَيْنMaine,وَقَالَand he saidإِنَّthatفِرْقَتَهُhis groupحَارَبَتْfoughtجَيْشَthe army ofالْمُتَمَرِّدِينَthe rebelsكُلَّهُallلِمُدَّةِfor a period ofأَرْبَعِfourسَاعَاتٍhoursوَقَتَلَتْand killedنَحْوَaboutخَمْسَةِfiveآلَافٍthousandمِنْهُمْ.of them.

One of the men said: I met one of the youths from the state of Maine, and he said that his group fought the army of the rebels all for a period of four hours and killed about five thousand of them.

قَالَHe saidإِنَّthatمَعْرَكَةًa battleأُخْرَىanotherكَهَذِهِlike thisسَوْفَwillتُنْهِيendالْحَرْبَthe warتَمَامًا.completely.

He said that another battle like this will completely end the war.

تَزَايَدَIncreasedالصَّخَبُthe noiseأَمَامَهُمْ،in front of them,وَandتَجَمَّدَfrozeهنريHenryوَرِفَاقُهُand his companionsصَمْتًاsilentlyفِيinأَمَاكِنِهِمْ.their places.

The noise increased in front of them, and Henry and his companions froze silently in their places.

لَاذَتْFledمَجْمُوعَةٌa groupمُرْتَبِكَةٌconfusedمِنَofالرِّجَالِthe menبِالْفِرَارِby running awayعَبْرَacrossالْحُقُولِ.the fields.

A confused group of the men fled by running away across the fields.

مَرَّتْPassedقَذِيفَةٌa shellمُدَوِّيَةٌthunderingمِثْلَlikeالْعَاصِفَةِthe stormفَوْقَaboveرُءُوسِthe heads ofجُنُودِthe soldiers ofالِاحْتِيَاطِthe reserve,وَهَبَطَتْand descendedفَوْقَuponأَرْضِthe land ofالْبُسْتَانِ،the garden,ثُمَّthenانْفَجَرَتْexplodedلِتُبَعْثِرَto scatterالتُّرَابَthe dustالْبُنِّيَّbrownوَأَوْرَاقَand the leaves ofالصَّنَوْبَرِthe pineفِيinكُلِّeveryمَكَانٍ.place.

A thundering shell passed like the storm above the heads of the reserve soldiers, and descended upon the land of the garden, then exploded to scatter the brown dust and the leaves of the pine in every place.

وَبَدَأَAnd beganصَفِيرُthe whistling ofالرَّصَاصَاتِbulletsبَيْنَbetweenالْأَغْصَانِthe branchesوَانْطِلَاقُهَاand their launchingبِسُرْعَةٍquicklyنَحْوَtowardالْأَشْجَارِ.the trees.

And the whistling of bullets began between the branches and their launching quickly toward the trees.

وَتَدَلَّتِAnd drooped downالْأَغْصَانُthe branchesوَالْأَوْرَاقُand the leavesإِلَىtoالْأَسْفَلِ،the bottom,وَكَأَنَّas ifآلَافَthousands ofالْفُئُوسِaxesالْخَفِيَّةِhiddenتَنْزِلُwere descendingعَلَيْهَا؛upon them;فَاضْطُرَّhence was forcedكَثِيرٌmanyمِنَofالرِّجَالِthe menإِلَىtoتَغْطِيَةِcoverرُءُوسِهِمْ.their heads.

And the branches and the leaves drooped down to the bottom, as if thousands of hidden axes were descending upon them; hence many of the men was forced to cover their heads.

أُصِيبَWas hitمُلَازِمُthe lieutenant ofكَتِيبَةِthe battalion ofهنريHenryبِطَلْقَةٍwith a bulletفِيinيَدِهِ،his hand,وَأَخَذَand he beganيَكِيلُto hurlاللَّعَنَاتِcursesحَتَّىuntilسَرَتْspreadضَحِكَةٌa laughمَشُوبَةٌtingedبِالتَّوَتُّرِwith tensionبَيْنَamongأَفْرَادِthe members ofالْكَتِيبَةِ.the battalion.

The lieutenant of Henry's battalion was hit with a bullet in his hand, and he began to hurl curses until a laugh tinged with tension spread among the members of the battalion.

The lieutenant pressed on his wound so that the blood would not drip upon his trousers, then the leader of the group tied a handkerchief around the wound.
