اقْتَرَبَapproachedصَفٌّa rowكَبِيرٌlargeمِنْfromصُفُوفِthe ranksالْعَدُوِّof the enemyمِنْfromكَتِيبَةِthe battalionهنري؛of Henry;فَكَانَand it wasيَسْهُلُeasyرُؤْيَتُهُمْ.to see them.

A large row approached from the enemy's ranks from the battalion of Henry; and it was easy to see them.

كَانُواThey wereطِوَالَtallالْقَامَةِin stature,نَحِيفِيthinالْأَجْسَامِin bodies,مُنْفَعِلِيexpressive inالْوُجُوهِtheir faces,يَتَحَرَّكُونَmovingبِخُطًىwith stepsوَاسِعَةٍ.wide.

They were tall, thin in body, and expressive in their faces, moving with wide steps.

وَأَمَامَAnd beforeهَذَاthisالْمَشْهَدِ،scene,تَوَقَّفَتْstoppedكَتِيبَةُthe platoon ofهنريHenryلَحْظَةًa momentقَبْلَbeforeأَنْthatيَبْدَءُواthey startإِطْلَاقَfiringالنِّيرَانِthe shots,ثَانِيَةًa secondقَبْلَbeforeحَتَّىevenصُدُورِthe issuance ofالْأَوَامِرِthe ordersبِذَلِكَ.with that.

Before this scene, the platoon of Henry stopped for a moment before they started firing the shots, a second before the orders were issued for that.

They began firing as soon as they noticed the looming danger.

لَكِنْButأَسْرَعَتْhastenedقُوَّاتُforces ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyبِالِاخْتِبَاءِby hidingخَلْفَbehindأَحَدِone ofالأَسْيِجَةِ،the fences,ثُمَّthenبَدَءُواthey beganإِطْلَاقَfiringالنَّارِthe fireمِنْanجَدِيدٍanewعَلَىatكَتِيبَةِthe battalion ofهنريHenryالَّتِيthatهَيَّأَتْhad preparedنَفْسَهَاitselfلِمُوَاجَهَةٍfor a confrontationضَارِيَةٍ.fierce.

But the enemy forces hastened by hiding behind one of the fences, then they began firing the fire anew at the battalion of Henry that had prepared itself for a fierce confrontation.

لَمَعَتْSparkledأَسْنَانٌteethبَيْضَاءُwhiteمِنْfromبَيْنِbetweenالْوُجُوهِthe facesالْمُتَّسِخَةِdirty,وَandكَبِيرًاoftenمَاwhatصَاحَshoutedجُنُودُsoldiers ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyوَandحَاوَلُواtriedإِهَانَةَto insultالْكَتِيبَةِthe battalion,لَكِنَّهَاbut itظَلَّتْremainedصَامِتَةًsilent.

White teeth sparkled between the dirty faces, and often soldiers of the enemy shouted and tried to insult the battalion, but it remained silent.

رُبَّمَاPerhapsكَانُواthey wereيَتَذَكَّرُونَrememberingالْإِهَانَةَthe insultالَّتِيwhichوَجَّهَهَاdirectedالجِنْرَالُthe generalلَهُمْto them,وَandالَّتِيwhichجَعَلَتْهُمُmade themأَشَدَّmore strongبَأْسًاin might.

Perhaps they were remembering the insult which the general directed to them, and which made them more strong in might.

عَزَمَDecidedهنريHenryعَلَىtoأَلَّاnotيَتْرُكَleaveهَذَاthisالْمَكَانَplaceمَهْمَاwhateverحَدَثَhappens.

Henry decided to leave this place whatever happens.

كَانَHe wasيُرِيدُwantingالثَّأْرَrevengeمِنَfromالضَّابِطِthe officerالَّذِيwhoنَعَتَهُمْdescribed themبِرَاكِبِيas riders ofالْبِغَالِthe mulesوَandبِالْفَاشِلِينَas failures.

He was wanting revenge from the officer who described them as riders of the mules and as failures.

وَأَفْضَلُAnd the bestانْتِقَامٍrevengeفِيinرَأْيِهِhis opinionأَنْis thatيَبْقَىhe remainsفِيinهَذَاthisالْمَكَانِplaceإِلَىuntilأَنْthatيَهْزِمَhe defeatsالْعَدُوَّthe enemy.

And the best revenge in his opinion is that he remains in this place until that he defeats the enemy.

سَوْفَHe willيُثْبِتُproveلِلْجَمِيعِto everyoneكَمhow muchهُوَhe isشُجَاعٌbrave.

He will prove to everyone how much he is brave.

أُصِيبَWere injuredأَفْرَادُmembers ofالْكَتِيبَةِthe battalionإِصَابَاتٍinjuriesبَالِغَةًsevere,وَسَقَطَand fellالْكَثِيرُونَmanyمِنْهُمْof them.

Members of the battalion were injured severe, and fell many of them.

زَحَفَCrawledبَعْضُهُمْsome of themبَعِيدًاfar awayعَنْfromمَيْدَانِthe field ofالْمَعْرَكَةِbattle,لَكِنْbutبَقِيَremainedالْكَثِيرُونَmanyبِلَاwithoutحَرَاكٍmovement.

Some of them crawled far away from the field of battle, but many remained without movement.

بَحَثَSearchedهنريHenryعَنْforوِلْسُونَ،Wilson,وَandوَجَدَهُfound himلَاnotيَزَالُceasing toيُحَارِبُ.fight.

Henry searched for Wilson, and found him not ceasing to fight.

وَلَمْAnd was notيُصَبِaffectedالْمُلَازِمُthe lieutenantهُوَheالْآخَرُthe otherبِسُوءٍ.badly.

And the lieutenant, he the other, was not affected badly.

كَانَHe wasيَصِيحُshoutingفِيatالْجُنُودِ،the soldiers,لَكِنَّbutالْوَضْعَthe situationسَارَbecameمُخْتَلِفًاdifferentالْآنَ.now.

He was shouting at the soldiers, but the situation became different now.

كَانَWasمُعَدَّلُthe rate ofالطَّلَقَاتِthe shotsيَتَضَاءَلُdiminishingشَيْئًا فَشَيْئًا،little by little,وَكَانَand wasصَوْتُthe voice ofالْمُلَازِمِthe lieutenantيَزْدَادُincreasingوَهَنًا.in weakness.

The rate of the shots was diminishing little by little, and the voice of the lieutenant was increasing in weakness.

The other side of the wall

أَتَىCameقَائِدُthe leader ofالْكَتِيبَةِthe battalionمُسْرِعًاhurriedlyمِنَfromالْخَلْفِthe back,يَتْبَعُهُfollowed by himمَجْمُوعَةٌa groupمِنَofالضُّبَّاطِ.the officers.

The leader of the battalion came hurriedly from the back, followed by him a group of the officers.

صَاحُواThey shoutedلَاnoبُدَّescapeأَنْthatنَهْجُمَwe attackعَلَيْهِمْupon themلَاnoبُدَّescapeأَنْthatنَهْجُمَwe attackعَلَيْهِمْupon them.

They shouted: No escape that we attack upon them, no escape that we attack upon them.

عِنْدَمَاWhenسَمِعَheardهنريHenryذَلِكَthat,بَدَأَhe beganيَدْرُسُstudyingالْمَسَافَةَthe distanceبَيْنَهُbetween himوَandبَيْنَbetweenالْعَدُوِّthe enemy.

When Henry heard that, he began studying the distance between him and between the enemy.

أَدْرَكَHe realizedأَنَّthatعَلَىuponكَتِيبَتِهِhis battalionالتَّحَرُّكَthe movingإِلَىtoالْأَمَامِthe frontإِذَاifأَرَادُواthey wantedتَحْقِيقَachievingالنَّصْرِ.the victory.

He realized that upon his battalion the moving to the front if they wanted achieving the victory.

سَوْفَThey willيَلْقَوْنَmeetحَتْفَهُمْtheir doomإِذَاifبَقُواthey stayفِيinأَمَاكِنِهِمْ.their places.

They will meet their doom if they stay in their places.

أَمَلُهُمُTheir hopeالْوَحِيدُthe onlyأَنْis thatيَدْفَعُواthey repelالْعَدُوَّthe enemyبَعِيدًاfar awayعَنِfromالسِّيَاجِthe fenceالَّذِيwhichيَخْتَبِئُhidesوَرَاءَهُ.behind it.

Their hope the only is that they repel the enemy far away from the fence which hides behind it.

ظَنَّHe thoughtأَنَّthatرِفَاقَهُhis companionsسَيَكُونُونَwill beمُنْهَكِينَexhaustedلِلْغَايَةِto the utmost,لَاnotيَقْوَوْنَhaving powerعلَىuponشَنِّlaunchingالْهُجُومِ،the attack,وَأَنَّهُand that heلَاnoبُدَّescapeمِنْfromتَشْجِيعِهِمْ،encouraging them,لَكِنَّbutعِنْدَمَاwhenالْتَفَتَhe turnedلِيَنْظُرَto lookإِلَيْهِمْ،at them,أَدْهَشَهُamazed himأَنَّهُthatقَدِindeedارْتَسَمَتْwere drawnعَلَىuponوُجُوهِهِمْtheir facesجَمِيعًاall togetherتَعْبِيرَاتٌexpressionsأَكِيدَةٌcertainوَسَرِيعَةٌand quickبِالْمُوَافَقَةِ.with agreement.

He thought that his companions will be exhausted to the utmost, not having power upon launching the attack, and that he must encouraging them, but when he turned to look at them, amazed him that indeed were drawn upon their faces all together expressions certain and quick with agreement.
