Henry saw that the lieutenant was standing now in tranquility, leaning on his sword.

وَسَادَAnd prevailedشُعُورٌa feelingغَرِيبٌstrangeفِيinتِلْكَthatالْفَتْرَةِperiodالْقَصِيرَةِ.short.

A strange feeling prevailed in that short period.

بَدَاSeemedالْمُلَازِمُthe officerكَالطِّفْلِlike the childالَّذِيwhoاسْتَنْزَفَexhaustedدُمُوعَهُhis tears

The officer seemed like the child who exhausted his tears

وَلَمْand did notيَعُدْanymoreيَعْرِفُknowمَاذَاwhatيَفْعَلُ.to do.

and no longer knew what to do.

كَانَHe wasيُفَكِّرُthinkingوَيُغَمْغِمُand murmuringلِنَفْسِهِto himselfبِكَلَامٍwith wordsغَيْرِunمَفْهُومٍ.comprehensible.

He was thinking and murmuring to himself with incomprehensible words.

تَصَاعَدَتْRoseبَعْضُsomeالْأَدْخِنَةِsmokesحَوْلَaroundالْكَتِيبَةِthe battalion

Some smoke rose around the battalion

بَيْنَمَاwhileانْتَظَرَwaitedالْجُنُودُthe soldiersالْمُخْتَبِئُونَwho were hidingمِنَfromالطَّلَقَاتِthe shots

while the soldiers who were hiding from the shots waited

ارْتِفَاعَthe riseالدُّخَانِof the smokeلِيَرَوْاto seeلِآخِرِfor the lastمَرَّةٍtimeمَاذَاwhatسَيَحْدُثُwill happenلَهُمْto them.

for the smoke to rise to see for the last time what would happen to them.

Chapter Twenty-Four

انْتِصَارٌVictoryمُؤَقَّتٌtemporary

Temporary Victory

فَجْأَةًSuddenlyقَطَعَcutصَمْتَthe silence ofالْجُنُودِthe soldiersصَوْتُthe voice ofالْمُلَازِمِthe lieutenantالْمُنْفَعِلِagitated

Suddenly, the silence of the soldiers was cut by the voice of the agitated lieutenant

عِنْدَمَاwhenقَالَ:he said:«هَا هُمْ قَادِمُونَ!»"Here they are coming!"

when he said: "Here they are coming!"

وَتَاهَتْAnd got lostكَلِمَاتُهُhis wordsالْأُخْرَىotherوَسْطَamidstضَجِيجِthe noise ofالطَّلَقَاتِ.the shots.

And his other words got lost amidst the noise of the shots.

نَظَرَLookedهنريHenryإِلَىatالْمَكَانِthe placeالَّذِيwhichأَشَارَpointedإِلَيْهِto itالْمُلَازِمُthe lieutenant

Henry looked at the place which the lieutenant pointed to

وَرَأَىand sawجُنُودَthe soldiers ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyيَقْتَرِبُونَ.approaching.

and saw the enemy soldiers approaching.

كَانُواThey wereقَرِيبِينَcloseجِدًّا،very,حَتَّىto the extentإِنَّهُthat heرَأَىsawوُجُوهَهُمْtheir faces

They were very close, to the extent that he saw their faces

وَزِيَّهُمُand their attireالرَّمَادِيَّgrayالَّذِيwhichبَدَاappearedجَدِيدًا.new.

and their gray attire which appeared new.

كَانَتْWereقُوَّاتُthe forces ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyتَتَقَدَّمُadvancingبِحَذَرٍcautiously

The enemy forces were advancing cautiously

وَبَنَادِقُهُمْand their riflesمُسْتَعِدَّةٌpreparedلِإِطْلَاقِto fireالنِّيرَانِ.the shots.

and their rifles prepared to fire.

وَعِنْدَمَاAnd whenصَاحَshoutedالْمُلَازِمُ،the lieutenant,وَبَدَأَتْand beganكَتِيبَةُthe battalion ofهنريHenryفِيinإِطْلَاقِopeningالنِّيرَانِ،fire,

And when the lieutenant shouted, and Henry's battalion began opening fire,

بَدَاit seemedوَكَأَنَّas ifجُنُودَthe soldiers ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyبُوغِتُواwere surprisedوَأُخِذُواand takenعَلَىonحِينِa moment ofغَفْلَةٍ.negligence.

it seemed as if the enemy soldiers were surprised and caught in a moment of negligence.

تَبَادَلَExchangedالْجَيْشَانِthe two armiesالضَّرَبَاتِ،the strikes,وَاسْتَمَرَّand continuedالْقَصْفُthe bombardmentالْغَاضِبُangryوَالسَّرِيعُand rapidمِنَfromالْجَانِبَيْنِ.the two sides.

The two armies exchanged strikes, and the angry and rapid bombardment continued from both sides.

كَانَWereالْجُنُودُthe soldiersفِيinكَتِيبَةِthe battalion ofهنريHenryبِزِيِّهِمُin their uniformsالْأَزْرَقِblueمُتَلَهِّفِينَeagerلِلثَّأْرِfor revenge.

The soldiers in Henry's battalion — in their blue uniforms — were eager for revenge.

تَوَارَىWithdrewهنريHenryبَعْضَfor someالْوَقْتِtime.

Henry withdrew for some time.

لَمْDid notيَكُنْheيَسْتَطِيعُableرُؤْيَةَto seeالْعَدُوِّthe enemyبِوُضُوحٍclearly

He could not see the enemy clearly

لَكِنْbutبَدَاit seemedأَنْthatهُنَاكَthere areالكَثِيرِينَmanyمِنْهُمْof them

but it seemed that there were many of them

وَأَنَّهُمْand that theyيَتَقَدَّمُونَare advancingإِلَىtowardsالْأَمَامِthe frontشَيْئًاlittleفَشَيْئًا.by little.

and that they were advancing towards the front little by little.

جَلَسَHe satعَلَىonالْأَرْضِthe groundحَزِينًاsadlyوَandالْرَّايَةُthe flagبَيْنَbetweenرُكْبَتَيْهِ.his knees.

He sat on the ground sadly with the flag between his knees.

وَعِنْدَمَاAnd whenلَاحَظَnoticedهنريHenryالْغَضَبَthe angerالشَّدِيدَintenseالَّذِيthatيَجْتَاحُsweepsأَصْدِقَاءَهُhis friends

And when Henry noticed the intense anger sweeping his friends

أَدْرَكَhe realizedأَنَّهُthatإِذَاifانْتَصَرَtriumphsالعَدُوُّthe enemyحَقًّاtrulyفَسَيَكُونُthen it will beذَلِكَthatنَصْرًاa victoryعَسِيرًاdifficultوَمُؤْلِمًا.and painful.

he realized that if the enemy truly triumphs, then it will be a difficult and painful victory.

لَكِنْButبَدَأَتْbeganضَرَبَاتُthe strikes ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyتَضْعُفُ،to weaken,وَتَضَاءَلَand lessenedعَدَدُthe number ofالطَّلَقَاتِshotsالْقَادِمَةِcomingمِنْfromجِهَتِهِمْ.their side.

But the enemy's strikes began to weaken, and the number of shots coming from their side lessened.

وَأَخِيرًاAnd finallyعِنْدَمَاwhenتَوَقَّفَstoppedالرِّجَالُthe menقَلِيلًاfor a little whileلِإِلْقَاءِto castنَظْرَةٍa glance

And finally, when the men stopped for a short while to cast a glance

لَمْthey didيَرَوْاnot seeسِوَىexceptالدُّخَانِthe smokeالدَّاكِنِdarkيَمْلَأُfillingالْمَكَانَ.the place.

they saw nothing but the dark smoke filling the place.

وَقَفَStoodالْجُنُودُthe soldiersوَحَدَّقُواand staredفِيatالْخَلَاءِthe voidحَوْلَهُمْaround them

The soldiers stood and stared at the void around them

فَرَأَوُاand sawالأَرْضَthe landخَالِيَةًemptyمِنْofجُنُودِthe soldiers ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyعَدَاexceptجُثَثَthe corpsesالْقَتْلَى.of the killed.

and saw the land empty of the enemy's soldiers except for the corpses of the killed.

عِنْدَUponرُؤْيَةِseeingهَذَاthisالْمَشْهَدِ،scene,انْطَلَقَcame outالكَثِيرُmanyمِنَofالْجُنُودِthe soldiersمِنْfromمَخَابِئِهِمْ،their hideouts,وَرَقَصُواand dancedرَقْصَةَa danceفَرَحٍof joyغَرِيبَةً.strange.

Upon seeing this scene, many soldiers came out of their hideouts and danced a strange dance of joy.

اتَّقَدَتْFlaredعُيُونُهُمْtheir eyesوَانْطَلَقَand burstهُتَافٌa cryأَجَشُّhoarseمِنْfromبَيْنَbetweenشِفَاهِهِمُtheir lipsالْجَافَّةِ.dry.

Their eyes flared, and a hoarse cry burst from between their dry lips.

كَانُواThey wereقَدْindeedأَوْشَكُواaboutأَنْtoيُصَدِّقُواbelieveأَنَّهُمْthat theyبِلَاwithoutجَدْوَى،benefit,وَأَنَّهُمْand that theyلَنْwill notيَصْمُدُواwithstandأَمَامَbeforeالْعَدُوِّ،the enemy,

They were indeed about to believe that they were without benefit, and that they would not withstand before the enemy,

لَكِنَّهُمْbut theyعِنْدَمَاwhenكَانُواthey wereعَلَىonوَشْكِthe verge ofخَسَارَةِlosingهَذِهِthisالْمَعْرَكَةِbattleالصَّغِيرَةِ،small,أَدْرَكُواthey realizedأَنَّthatحَجْمَthe size ofالْجَيْشِthe armyلَيْسَis notمُهِمًّا.important.

but when they were on the verge of losing this small battle, they realized that the size of the army is not important.

لَقَدْIndeedثَأَرُواthey avengedلِأَنْفُسِهِمْthemselvesمِنَfromالْعَدُوِّthe enemyوَانْتَصَرُواand were victoriousعَلَيْهِ.over him.

Indeed, they avenged themselves from the enemy and were victorious over him.
