مَرُّواThey passedعَلَىbyجُنْدِيٍّa soldierجَرِيحٍwoundedدُونَwithoutأَنْthatيَتَوَقَّفُواthey stop

They passed by a wounded soldier without stopping.

وَAndبَعْدَafterلَحْظَةٍa momentتَوَجَّهَwentضَابِطٌan officerآخَرُotherعَلَىonجَوَادِهِhis horseنَحْوَtowardsالْجِنْرَالِthe general

After a moment, another officer went on his horse towards the general.

يَبْدُوIt seemsأَنَّthatأَحَدًاanyoneلَمْdid notيَلْمَحْnoticeهِنْرِيHenryوَandصَدِيقَهُhis friend

It seems that no one noticed Henry and his friend;

وَلِذَاand thereforeظَلَّاthey remainedقَرِيبَيْنِcloseيُحَاوِلَانِtryingالِاسْتِمَاعَto listenلِمَاto whatيَقُولُهُhe is sayingالْجِنْرَالُthe general

and therefore they remained close trying to listen to what the general was saying.

قَالَSaidالْجِنْرَالُthe generalتَسْتَعِدُّare preparingقُوَّاتُforces ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyهُنَاكَthereلِشَنِّto launchهُجُومٍattackآخَرَanother

The general said: 'The enemy forces are preparing there for another attack.'

كَانَHe wasيَتَحَدَّثُtalkingفِيinهُدُوءٍquietوَكَأَنَّهُand as if heيَتَكَلَّمُis speakingعَنْaboutمَلَابِسِclothes ofالضَّابِطِthe officer

He was talking quietly as if he was talking about the officer's clothes.

أَخْشَىI fearأَنَّهُمْthat theyسَيَخْتَرِقُونَwill breachصُفُوفَنَاour ranks

I fear that they will breach our ranks

مَاunlessلَمْwe doنَتَحَرَّكْmoveكَالرَّعْدِlike thunderلِإِيقَافِهِمْto stop them

unless we move like thunder to stop them.

قَالَSaidالضَّابِطُthe officerغَاضِبًاangrilyمِنَit isالصَّعْبِdifficultالتَّصَدِّيto confrontلَهُمْthem

The officer said angrily: 'It is difficult to confront them.'

قَالَSaidالْجِنْرَالُthe generalهَذَاthis isمَاwhatأَتَوَقَّعُهُI expectأَيْضًاalso

The general said: 'This is what I expect also.'

ثُمَّThenبَدَأَhe beganيَتَحَدَّثُto talkسَرِيعًاquicklyوَandبِصَوْتٍwith a voiceمُنْخَفِضٍlowمَعَwithمُسَاعِدِيهِhis assistants

Then he began to talk quickly and in a low voice with his assistants.

لَمْDid notيَسْمَعْhearهِنْرِيHenryوَandوِيلْسُونَWilsonشَيْئًاanythingآخَرَelseإِلَىuntilأَنْthatسَأَلَaskedالْجِنْرَالُthe generalالضَّابِطَthe officer

Henry and Wilson did not hear anything else until the general asked the officer

أَيُّWhichالْكَتَائِبِbattalionsيُمْكِنُكَyou canالِاسْتِغْنَاءُdispenseعَنْهَاwith?

'Which battalion can you dispense with?'

فَكَّرَThoughtالضَّابِطُthe officerثُمَّthenقَالَsaid

The officer thought then said:

الْكَتِيبَةُThe battalionرَقْمُnumberثَلَاثُ مِئَةٍ وَأَرْبَعَةٍ304

'The battalion number 304.

إِنَّهُمْIndeed theyعَدِيمُوare devoid ofالْجَدْوَىutilityيُحَارِبُونَthey fightوَكَأَنَّهُمْas if theyيَمْتَطُونَare ridingبِغَالًاdonkeys

Indeed, they are worthless, they fight as if they are riding donkeys.

يُمْكِنُنِيI canالِاسْتِغْنَاءُdispenseعَنْهُمْwith themبِسُهُولَةٍeasily

I can dispense with them easily.'

نَظَرَLookedهِنْرِيHenryوَandوِيلْسُونُWilsonأَحَدُهُمَاone of themلِلْآخَرِto the otherفِيinدَهْشَةٍamazement

Henry and Wilson looked at each other in amazement;

فَالْكَتِيبَةُfor the battalionرَقْمُnumberثَلَاثُ مِئَةٍ وَأَرْبَعَةٍ304هِيَisكَتِيبَتُهُمَاtheir battalion

for battalion number 304 is their battalion.

وَتَحَدَّثَAnd spokeالْجِنْرَالُthe generalبَعْدَهَاafter thatبِحِدَّةٍwith severity

And the general spoke after that with severity:

جَهِّزْPrepareتِلْكَthatالْكَتِيبَةَbattalionإِذَنْthen

'Prepare that battalion then.

سَأُرَاقِبُI will observeالْمَعْرَكَةَthe battleمِنْfromهُنَاhereوَandأُصْدِرُI will issueالْأَمْرَthe orderبِتَوْقِيتِat the timing ofالْبَدْءِthe start

I will observe the battle from here, and I will issue the order at the start time.

سَوْفَWillيَنْتَهِيendالْأَمْرُthe matterفِيinغُضُونِwithinخَمْسِfiveدَقَائِقَminutes

The matter will end within five minutes.

لَاI doأَعْتَقِدُnot believeأَنَّthatرَاكِبِيriders ofالْبِغَالِthe mulesسَيَنْجُونَwill surviveمِنْfromذَلِكَthat.'

I do not believe that the riders of the mules will survive from that.'

ابْتَسَمَSmiledالضَّابِطُthe officerوَandالْجِنْرَالُthe generalوَwhileهُمَاtheyيَفْتَرِقَانِparted ways

The officer and the general smiled as they parted ways.

أَسْرَعَHastenedهِنْرِيHenryوَandوِيلْسُونُWilsonبِالْعَوْدَةِto returnإِلَىtoكَتِيبَتِهِمَاtheir battalion

Henry and Wilson hastened to return to their battalion

وَwhileالُّذْعْرُfearيَكْسُوcoveredوَجْهَيْهِمَاtheir faces

while fear covered their faces.

وَمَعَAnd althoughأَنَّthatالْأَمْرَthe matterلَمْdid notيَسْتَغْرِقْtakeإِلَّاexceptدَقَائِقَminutesمَعْدُودَةًa few

Although the matter took only a few minutes,

شَعَرَfeltهِنْرِيHenryكَأَنَّهُas if heقَدْhadشَاخَagedعِدَّةَseveralسِنِينَyears

Henry felt as if he had aged several years.

أَدْرَكَRealizedهِنْرِيHenryأَنَّهُthat heلَاdoesيَعْنِيmeanأَيَّanyشَيْءٍthingلِلْجَيْشِto the army

Henry realized that he does not mean anything to the army.

تَحَدَّثَTalkedالضَّابِطُthe officerعَنْaboutكَتِيبَتِهِhis battalionوَكَأَنَّهُas if heيَتَحَدَّثُwas talkingعَنْaboutمِكْنَسَةٍa broom

The officer talked about his battalion as if he was talking about a broom.

وَعِنْدَمَاAnd whenعَادَاthey returnedأَخْبَرَاthey informedالْجَمِيعَeveryoneأَنَّهُمْthat theyسَيُهَاجِمُونَwill attackالْعَدُوَّthe enemyفِيinغُضُونِwithinدَقَائِقَminutes

And when they returned, they informed everyone that they would attack the enemy within a few minutes.

قَالَSaidالْمُلَازِمُthe lieutenantوَقَدْwhileعَلَتْappeared onوَجْهَهُhis faceابْتِسَامَةٌa smile

The lieutenant said, while a smile appeared on his face:

هُجُومٌAn attack?نَحْنُWeنُقَاتِلُare fightingالْآنَnowإِذَنْthen!

'An attack? We are fighting then!'

رَأَىSawالرِّجَالُthe menشَخْصَيْنِtwo personsفَوْقَuponصَهْوَتَيْthe saddles ofجَوَادَيْهِمَاtheir horsesعَلَىatمَسَافَةٍa distanceقَصِيرَةٍshort

The men saw two persons upon their horses' saddles at a short distance;

الْأَوَّلُthe firstقَائِدُcommander ofالْكَتِيبَةِthe battalionوَandالثَّانِيthe secondالضَّابِطُthe officerالَّذِيwhoتَلَقَّىreceivedالْأَوَامِرَthe ordersمِنَfromالْجِنْرَالِthe general

the first was the commander of the battalion, and the second was the officer who received the orders from the general.

كَانَاThey wereيَتَحَدَّثَانِtalkingأَحَدُهُمَاone of themإِلَىtoالْآخَرِthe otherوَandيُشِيرَانِpointingنَحْوَtowardsالْكَتِيبَةِthe battalion

They were talking to each other and pointing towards the battalion.

بَدَأَBeganالضُّبَّاطُthe officersفِيinتَقْسِيمِdividingالرِّجَالِthe menإِلَىintoمَجْمُوعَاتٍgroupsصَغِيرَةٍsmall

The officers began dividing the men into small groups.

وَسُرْعَانَAnd quicklyمَاwhatبَدَاappeared wasكُلُّeveryفَرْدٍindividualفِيinالْكَتِيبَةِthe battalionمَشْدُودَwith tenseالْقَامَةِstatureيَأْخُذُtakingنَفَسًاa breathعَمِيقًاdeep

And quickly every individual in the battalion appeared with a tense stature, taking a deep breath.

كَانُواThey wereيُرَاقِبُونَmonitoringالْغَابَةَthe forestوَwhileأَحَاطَsurroundedبِهِمْthemمِنْfromكُلِّeveryجَانِبٍsideضَجِيجُthe noise ofالْمَعْرَكَةِthe battleالْكُبْرَىgreatبَيْنَbetweenالْجَيْشَيْنِthe two armies

They were monitoring the forest, and the noise of the great battle between the two armies surrounded them from every side.

بَدَاSeemedسَائِرُthe rest ofالْعَالَمِthe worldمُنْشَغِلًاpreoccupiedبِأَشْيَاءَwith thingsأُخْرَىother

The rest of the world seemed preoccupied with other things.

وَكَانَAnd wasهَذَاthisالْقِتَالُfightمِنْofنَصِيبِshare ofتِلْكَthatالْكَتِيبَةِbattalionوَحْدَهَاalone

And this fight was the share of that battalion alone.
