وَارْتَسَمَتْAnd was imprintedعَلَىuponوَجْهِهِhis faceنَظْرَةُa lookحُبٍّof loveلِلْجَيْشِfor the army.
And a look of love for the army was imprinted upon his face.
سَأَلَAskedالرَّجُلُthe manهُنْرِيHenryبَعْدَafterبُرْهَةٍa while:
The man asked Henry after a while:
أَيْنَ"Whereأُصِبْتَwere you woundedيَاOفَتَى؟young man?"
"Where were you wounded, O young man?"
شَعَرَFeltهُنْرِيHenryبِالذُّعْرِpanicفَوْرًاimmediatelyعِنْدَuponسَمَاعِhearingالسُّؤَالِ.the question.
Henry felt panic immediately upon hearing the question.
سَأَلَHe askedهُنْرِيHenry:مَاذَا؟"What?"
Henry asked: "What?"
فَسَأَلَهُSo asked himالرَّجُلُthe manثَانِيَةًagain:أَيْنَ"Whereأُصِبْتَ؟were you injured?"
So the man asked him again: "Where were you injured?"
رَدَّRepliedهُنْرِيHenry:لِمَاذَا؟"Why?أَنَاI...إِنَّهُIt is...لِمَاذَا؟Why?أَنَا...I..."
Henry replied: "Why? I... It is... Why? I..."
اسْتَدَارَTurnedهُنْرِيHenryفَجْأَةًsuddenlyوَأَخَذَand beganيَرْكُضُrunningوَسْطَin the midst ofالْحَشْدِ.the crowd.
Henry suddenly turned and began running in the midst of the crowd.
اكْتَسَىOverspreadوَجْهُهُhis faceبِاللَّوْنِwith the colorالْأَحْمَرِ،red,وَالْتَقَطَتْand clutchedأَصَابِعُهُhis fingersفِيinتَوَتُّرٍtensionأَحَدَone ofأَزْرَارِهِ.his buttons.
His face overspread with the color red, and his fingers clutched in tension at one of his buttons.
ظَلَّHe remainedمُنَكَّسَbowedالرَّأْسِof head,يُحَدِّقُstaringفِيatالزِّرِّthe buttonكَأَنَّas ifبِهِthere wereخَطْبًاa matterمَا.grave.
He remained with his head bowed, staring at the button as if there were some grave matter concerning it.

تَرَاجَعَRetreatedهُنْرِيHenryحَتَّىtoمُؤَخِّرَةِthe rear ofالْحَشْدِ،the crowd,وَظَلَّand remainedمُتَوَارِيًاconcealedعَنِfromالْأَنْظَارِsightحَتَّىuntilاخْتَفَىdisappearedالْجُنْدِيُّthe soldierرَثُّof tatteredالثِّيَابِ،clothing,ثُمَّthenبَدَأَbeganيَسِيرُto walkمَعَwithالْآخَرِينَ.the others.
Henry retreated to the rear of the crowd and remained concealed from sight until the soldier in tattered clothing disappeared, then began to walk with the others.
لَكِنَّهُButكَانَhe wasمُحَاطًاsurroundedبِالْجَرْحَى،by the wounded.
But he was surrounded by the wounded.
السُّؤَالُThe questionالَّذِيthatطَرَحَهُposedعَلَيْهِto himالْجُنْدِيُّthe soldierرَثُّof tatteredالثِّيَابِclothingجَعَلَهُmade himيَشْعُرُfeelأَنَّthatعَارَهُhis shameسَيَكُونُwould beمَلْحُوظًاnoticedلِلْجَمِيعِ.by everyone.
The question that the tattered soldier posed to him made him feel that his shame would be noticed by everyone.
كَانَWasهُنْرِيHenryيَنْظُرُlookingأَحْيَانًاat timesإِلَىatالرِّجَالِthe menالْآخَرِينَotherبِعَيْنٍwith an eyeمِلْؤُهَاfull ofالْحَسَدُ،envy;
Henry at times looked at the other men with an eye full of envy;
كَانَheيَتَمَنَّىwishedلَوْthatكَانَhe hadلَدَيْهِwith himجُرْحٌa woundهُوَasالْآخَرُ؛the others had;شَارَةٌa markحَمْرَاءُredتَدُلُّindicatingعَلَىuponشَجَاعَتِهِ.his bravery.
he wished that he too had a wound like the others; a red mark indicating his bravery.
كَانَThere wasهُنَاكَthereرَجُلٌa manمُصَابٌinjuredعَلَىonجَانِبِthe side ofالطَّرِيقِ.the road.
There was an injured man on the side of the road.
حَاوَلَTriedالرِّجَالُthe menالْآخَرُونَotherمُسَاعَدَتَهُ،to help him,لَكِنَّهُbut heأَبْعَدَهُمْwarded them offوَطَلَبَand askedمِنْهُمْof themأَنْtoيَتْرُكُوهُleave himوَشَأْنَهُ.to his own devices.
The other men tried to help him, but he warded them off and asked them to leave him to his own devices.
كَانَWasوَجْهُهُhis faceرَمَادِيًّا،gray,وَشَفَتَاهُand his lipsمُغْلَقَتَيْنِclosedبِإِحْكَامٍ.securely.
His face was gray, and his lips were securely closed.
تَحَرَّكَMovedالرَّجُلُthe manبِصُعُوبَةٍwith difficultyوَكَأَنَّهُas though heيُحَاوِلُwere tryingأَنْtoيَحْمِيَprotectجُرُوحَهُ.his wounds.
The man moved with difficulty as though he were trying to protect his wounds.
بَدَاIt appearedأَنَّهُthat heيَبْحَثُwas searchingأَثْنَاءَduringسَيْرِهِhis walkعَنْforمَقْبَرَةٍ.a grave.
It appeared that he was searching during his walk for a grave.
شَيْءٌSomethingمَاinفِيthe mannerالطَّرِيقَةِwherebyالَّتِيwhichلَوَّحَwavedبِهَاthereinالرَّجُلُthe manإِلَىtoالْجُنُودِthe soldiersالْآخَرِينَotherلِيَبْتَعِدُواto keep awayعَنْهُfrom himأَدْهَشَastonishedهُنْرِي،Henry,
Something in the manner whereby the man waved to the other soldiers to keep away from him astonished Henry,
فَصَاحَso he cried outفِيinفَزَعٍ،terror,ثُمَّthenوَضَعَplacedيَدَهُhis handعَلَىuponذِرَاعِthe arm ofالرَّجُلِ،the man,وَعِنْدَمَاand whenالْتَفَتَhe turnedإِلَيْهِ،to him,صَاحَshoutedهُنْرِي:Henry:جِيمْ"Jimكُونَكْلِينْ!Conklin!"
so he cried out in terror, then placed his hand upon the man's arm, and when he turned to him, Henry shouted: "Jim Conklin!"
ارْتَسَمَتْWas drawnعَلَىuponوَجْهِthe face ofجِيمْJimابْتِسَامَةٌa smileصَغِيرَةٌsmall,وَقَالَ:and he said:مَرْحَبًا"WelcomeيَاOهُنْرِي.Henry."
A small smile was drawn upon Jim's face, and he said: "Welcome, O Henry."
قَالَSaidهُنْرِي:Henry:آهٍ"AhيَاOجِيمْ!Jim!آهٍAhيَاOجِيمْ!Jim!آهٍAhيَاOجِيمْ!Jim!"
Henry said: "Ah Jim! Ah Jim! Ah Jim!"
سَأَلَهُAsked himجِيمُ:Jim:أَيْنَ"Whereكُنْتَwere youيَاOهُنْرِي؟Henry?"
Jim asked him: "Where were you, O Henry?"
وَمَدَّAnd extendedيَدَيْهِ:his hands:لَقَدْ"Iكُنْتُhave beenقَلِقًاworriedعَلَيْكَ.about you."
And he extended his hands: "I have been worried about you."
لَمْDid notيَسْتَطِعْbe ableهُنْرِيHenryأَنْtoيَقُولَsayشَيْئًاanythingسِوَى:except:آهٍ"AhيَاOجِيمْ!Jim!"
Henry was not able to say anything except: "Ah Jim!"
قَالَSaidجِيمُ:Jim:أَتَعْلَمُ؟"Do you know?لَقَدْIndeedكُنْتُI wasهُنَاكَ،there,يَاohلَهُwhat aمِنْcircusسِيرْكٍ.it was.
Jim said: "Do you know? Indeed I was there, oh what a circus it was.
لَقَدْIndeedأُصِبْتُ،I was injured,لَقَدْindeedأُصِبْتُ.I was injured.الْوَضْعُThe situationسَيِّئٌis badلِلْغَايَةِ.extremely."
Indeed I was injured, indeed I was injured. The situation is extremely bad."
وَبَيْنَمَاAnd whileوَاصَلَcontinuedالصَّدِيقَانِthe two friendsسَيْرَهُمَاtheir walk,بَدَاit appearedفَجْأَةًsuddenlyأَنَّthatالْخَوْفَfearقَدْhadغَلَبَoverwhelmedجِيمًا؛Jim;
And while the two friends continued their walk, it suddenly appeared that fear had overwhelmed Jim;
فَأَمْسَكَso he graspedبِذِرَاعِthe arm ofهُنْرِيHenryوَبَدَأَand beganيَتَحَدَّثُspeakingبِصَوْتٍin a voiceهَامِسٍwhisperingمُرْتَجِفٍ.and trembling.
so he grasped Henry's arm and began speaking in a whispering and trembling voice.
رَأَىSawهُنْرِيHenryأَنَّthatصَدِيقَهُhis friendوَاهِنٌwas feebleلِلْغَايَةِ.in the extreme.
Henry saw that his friend was feeble in the extreme.
