وَجَزَاءُAnd the recompenseأَعْمَالِهِمْ.of their deeds.
And the recompense of their deeds.
وَضَرَبَAnd struckاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِمُupon themالذِّلَّةَhumiliationوَالْمَسْكَنَةَand miseryوَبَاءُواand they returnedبِغَضَبٍwith wrathمِّنَfromاللَّهِ.Allah.
And Allah struck upon them humiliation and misery, and they returned with wrath from Allah.
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyقَدْhaveأَسْخَطُواangeredاللَّهَAllahالَّذِيwhoجَعَلَmadeفِيهِمُamong themأَنْبِيَاءَ،prophets,وَجَعَلَهُمْand made themمُلُوكًا،kings,آتَاهُمْand gave them
Indeed, they have angered Allah, who made prophets among them, and made them kings, and gave them
مَاwhatلَمْnotيُؤْتِHe gaveأَحَدًاanyoneمِّنَfromالْعَالَمِينَthe worldsفِيinعَصْرِهِمْ؛their era;
what He gave to no one from the worlds in their era;
الَّذِيthe One whoأَنْجَاهُمْsaved themمِنْfromآلِthe family ofفِرْعَوْنَPharaohيَسُومُونَهُمْwho were afflicting them withسُوءَevilالْعَذَابِtorment,يَذْبَحُونَslaughteringأَبْنَاءَهُمْtheir sonsوَيَسْتَحْيُونَand keeping aliveنِسَاءَهُمْ؛their women;
the One who saved them from the family of Pharaoh, who were afflicting them with evil torment, slaughtering their sons and keeping alive their women;
الَّذِيthe One whoفَرَّقَdividedبِهِمُfor themالْبَحْرَthe seaفَأَنْجَاهُمْand saved themوَأَغْرَقَand drownedآلَthe family ofفِرْعَوْنَPharaohوَهُمْwhile theyيَنظُرُونَ؛were looking;
the One who divided the sea for them and saved them, and drowned the family of Pharaoh while they were looking;
الَّذِيthe One whoظَلَّلَshadedعَلَيْهِمُupon themالْغَمَامَthe cloudsوَأَنزَلَand sent downعَلَيْهِمُupon themالْمَنَّthe mannaوَالسَّلْوَىٰ؛and the quails;
the One who shaded them with the clouds and sent down upon them the manna and the quails;
الَّذِيthe One whoفَجَّرَcaused to gush forthلَهُمfor themمِّنَfromالْأَرْضِthe earthعُيُونًا،springs,وَوَسَّعَand provided abundantlyلَهُمfor themفِيinمَأْكَلٍfoodوَمَشْرَبٍ.and drink.
the One who caused to gush forth for them from the earth springs, and provided abundantly for them in food and drink.
وَكَانَAnd wasجَزَاءُthe recompenseكُلِّof allذَٰلِكَthatأَنthatكَفَرُواthey disbelievedبِآيَاتِin the signsاللَّهِof Allahوَعَصَوْاand disobeyedوَاعْتَدَوْا،and transgressed,وَأَغْضَبُواand angeredنَبِيَّهُمْtheir prophetمُوسَىٰMoses,أَشْفَقَwho was the most compassionateخَلْقِof the creationاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْهِمْ،towards them,وَأَشْفَقَand more compassionateعَلَيْهِمْtowards themمِنْthanآبَائِهِمْtheir fathersوَأُمَّهَاتِهِمْ.and mothers.
And the recompense of all that was that they disbelieved in the signs of Allah and disobeyed and transgressed, and angered their prophet Moses, who was the most compassionate of the creation of Allah towards them, and more compassionate towards them than their fathers and mothers.
ذَٰلِكَThat is the oneالَّذِيwhoكَانَwasيَحْنُوshowing tendernessعَلَيْهِمْtowards themحُنُوَّwith the tendernessالْمُرْضِعِof a nursing motherعَلَىtowardsالْفَطِيمِthe weaned childوَالْأُمِّand the motherالْحَنُونِwho is tenderعَلَىtowardsالْيَتِيمِ؛the orphan;
That is the one who was showing tenderness towards them with the tenderness of a nursing mother towards the weaned child and the mother who is tender towards the orphan;
ذَٰلِكَThat is the oneالَّذِيwhoكُلَّمَاwheneverسَبُّوهُthey reviled himدَعَاhe prayedلَهُمْ،for them,وَكُلَّمَاand wheneverضَحِكُواthey laughedعَلَيْهِat himبَكَىٰhe weptلَهُمْ؛for them;وَكُلَّمَاand wheneverجَفَوْهُthey were harsh with himرَثَىٰhe felt pityلَهُمْ؛for them;
That is the one who, whenever they reviled him, he prayed for them, and whenever they laughed at him, he wept for them; and whenever they were harsh with him, he felt pity for them;
