وَلَكِن᠋َButبَنِيٓthe childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelكَانُوا۟wereمَفْتُونِينَfascinatedبِسِحْرِby the magicالسَّامِرِيِّof the Samiri،,وَأُشْرِبُوا۟and they were imbuedفِيinقُلُوبِهِمُtheir heartsالْعِجْلَwith the love of the calfفَقَالُوا۟:so they said:
But the children of Israel were fascinated by the magic of the Samiri, and they were imbued in their hearts with the love of the calf, so they said:
لَنْNeverنَبْرَحَwill we ceaseعَلَيْهِupon itعَاكِفِينَbeing devotedحَتَّىuntilيَرْجِعَreturnsإِلَيْنَاto usمُوسَىMoses.
Never will we cease being devoted upon it until Moses returns to us.
١٦16--الْعِقَابُThe Punishment
16 - The Punishment
وَلَمَّآAnd whenأَخْبَرَinformedاللَّهُAllahمُوسَىMosesأَنَّthatبَنِيٓthe childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelأَضَلَّهُمُwere led astray byالسَّامِرِيُّthe Samari،,رَجَعَhe returnedإِلَىtoقَوْمِهِhis peopleغَضْبَانَangryأَسِفًاand grieving.
And when Allah informed Moses that the children of Israel were led astray by the Samari, he returned to his people angry and grieving.
وَغَضِبَAnd he was angryعَلَىatقَوْمِهِhis peopleوَعَاتَبَand he rebukedأَخِيهِhis brotherهَارُونَ:Aaron:
And he was angry at his people and he rebuked his brother Aaron:
قَالَHe saidيَاهَارُونُO Aaronمَاwhatمَنَعَكَprevented youإِذْwhenرَأَيْتَهُمْyou saw themضَلُّوا۟go astrayأَلَّاthat you did notتَتَّبِعَنِfollow me?أَفَعَصَيْتَHave you then disobeyedأَمْرِيmy command?
He said, 'O Aaron, what prevented you when you saw them go astray that you did not follow me? Have you then disobeyed my command?'
وَاعْتَذَرَAnd excused himselfهَارُونُAaron،,وَقَالَand saidإِنِّيIndeed, Iخَشِيتُfearedأَنْthatتَقُولَyou would sayفَرَّقْتَ'You caused division amongبَيْنَbetweenبَنِيٓthe childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelوَلَمْand did notتَرْقُبْobserveقَوْلِيmy word.'
And Aaron excused himself, and said, 'Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the children of Israel and did not observe my word.''
إِنَّIndeed, theالْقَوْمَpeopleاسْتَضْعَفُونِيweakened meوَكَادُوا۟and almostيَقْتُلُونَنِيkilled me.'
Indeed, the people weakened me and almost killed me.
قَالَHe saidرَبِّMy Lordاغْفِرْforgiveلِيmeوَلِأَخِيand my brotherوَأَدْخِلْنَاand admit usفِيintoرَحْمَتِكَYour mercyوَأَنْتَand Youأَرْحَمُare the most mercifulالرَّاحِمِينَof the merciful.
He said, 'My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.'
ثُمَّThenالْتَفَتَturnedمُوسَىMosesإِلَىtoالسَّامِرِيِّthe Samariفَقَالَand saidفَمَاThen whatخَطْبُكَis your matterيَاسَامِرِيُّO Samari?
Then Moses turned to the Samari and said, 'Then what is your matter, O Samari?'
وَاعْتَرَفَAnd confessedالسَّامِرِيُّthe Samariبِجُرْمِهِto his crime،,وَقَالَand saidكَذَلِكَThusسَوَّتْtemptedلِيmeنَفْسِيmy soul.
And the Samari confessed to his crime, and said, 'Thus tempted me my soul.'
