لَنْNeverنُؤْمِنَwill we believeلَكَyou
We will never believe you until we see Allah openly.
حَتَّىٰuntilنَرَىٰwe seeاللَّهَAllahجَهْرَةًopenly.
Until we see Allah openly.
غَضِبَWas angryاللَّهُAllahعَلَىٰatهَٰذِهِthisالْوَقَاحَةِimpertinenceوَالْجُرْأَةِ،and audacity,
Allah became angry at this impertinence and audacity,
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُso seized themالصَّاعِقَةُthe thunderboltوَهُمْwhile theyيَنْظُرُونَwere looking.
so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking.
وَرَأَوْاAnd they sawأَنَّهُمْthat theyلَاnotيَتَحَمَّلُونَcan bearهَٰذِهِthisالصَّاعِقَةَthunderbolt
And they saw that they cannot bear this thunderbolt
الَّتِيwhichخَلَقَهَاcreated itاللَّهُAllah,فَكَيْفَso howيَتَحَمَّلُونَcan they bearنُورَthe lightاللَّهِof Allah!
which Allah created, so how can they bear the light of Allah!
وَدَعَاAnd calledمُوسَىٰMosesرَبَّهُۥhis Lordوَقَالَand said:
And Moses called his Lord and said:
رَبِّ"My Lord,لَوْifشِئْتَYou willed,أَهْلَكْتَهُمYou would have destroyed themمِّنfromقَبْلُbeforeوَإِيَّايَand me.
"My Lord, if You willed, You would have destroyed them from before and me.
آتُهْلِكُنَاWould You destroy usبِمَاfor whatفَعَلَdidالسَّفَهَاءُthe foolsمِنَّاamong us?
Would You destroy us for what the fools among us did?
وَأَجَابَAnd answeredاللَّهُAllahدُعَآءَهُۥhis prayer
And Allah answered his prayer
وَبَعَثَهُمand resurrected themمِنfromبَعْدِafterمَوْتِهِمْtheir deathلَعَلَّهُمْthat they mightيَشْكُرُونَbe grateful.
and resurrected them from after their death, that they might be grateful.
١٥15––اَلْعِجْلُThe Calf
15 – The Calf
وَكَانَAnd wereبَنُوٓthe childrenإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَof Israelيَعِيشُونَlivingمَعَwithالْمُشْرِكِينَthe polytheists
And the children of Israel were living with the polytheists
فِىinمِصْرَEgyptمُنْذُsinceقُرُونٍcenturies.
in Egypt for centuries.
وَكَانَAnd wereالْأَقْبَاطُthe Coptsيَعْبُدُونَworshippingأَشْيَاءَthingsكَثِيرَةًmanyفِىinمِصْرَ،Egypt,
And the Copts were worshipping many things in Egypt,
وَبَنُوٓand the childrenإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَof Israelيَرَوْنَwere seeingذَٰلِكَthatبِأَعْيُنِهِمْwith their own eyes.
and the children of Israel were seeing that with their own eyes.
وَزَالَتْAnd fadedمِنْهُمfrom themكَرَاهَةُthe hatredالشِّرْكِof polytheism
And the hatred of polytheism faded from them,
وَتَسَرَّبَand creptإِلَيْهِمْinto themحُبُّهُۥits loveكَمَاasيَتَسَرَّبُseepsالْمَاءُwaterإِلَىٰintoبَيْتٍa houseوَاهِنٍweakعَتِيقٍand old.
and its love crept into them as water seeps into a weak and old house.
وَكَانُواAnd they wereكُلَّمَاwheneverوَجَدُواthey foundفُرْصَةًan opportunityاِنْحَدَرُواthey would descendإِلَىintoالشِّرْكِ،polytheism,
And whenever they found an opportunity, they would descend into polytheism,
كَمَاasيَنْحَدِرُdescendsالْمَاءُwaterإِلَىtoالْحُدُورِa downhill.
as water descends to a downhill.
