4 - Pharaoh of Egypt
وَجَاءَAnd there cameعَلَىٰuponعَرْشِthe throneمِصْرَof EgyptفَرَاعِنَةُPharaohsمُلُوكِkingsمِصْرَof Egypt))يُبْغِضُونَhatedبَنِيthe Childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israel
And there came upon the throne of Egypt, Pharaohs, kings of Egypt, who hated the Children of Israel.
بُغْضًاa hatredشَدِيدًا،intense,وَجَاءَand there cameعَلَىٰuponعَرْشِthe throneمِصْرَof Egyptمَلِكٌa kingجَبَّارٌtyrannicalجِدًّا.very.
An intense hatred, and there came upon the throne of Egypt a very tyrannical king.
فَكَانَSo he wasلَاnotيَرَىٰseeingأنَّthatبَنِيthe Childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelمِنْare fromأَوْلَادِthe childrenالْأَنْبِيَاءِthe prophetsوَأَنَّهُمْand that they areمِنْfromبَيْتِthe houseيُوسُفَof Josephمَلِكِkingمِصْرَof Egyptالْكَرِيمِ.the noble.
So he was not seeing that the Children of Israel are from the children of the prophets, and that they are from the house of Joseph, the noble king of Egypt.
بَلْRather,كَانَhe wasلَاnotيَرَىٰseeingأَنَّهُمْthat they areبَشَرٌhuman beingsيَسْتَحِقُّونَdeservingالرَّحْمَةِof mercyوَالْإِنْصَافِ،and justice,وَجَاءَand there cameعَلَىٰuponعَرْشِthe throneمِصْرَof Egyptمَلِكٌa kingجَبَّارٌtyrannicalجِدًّا.very.
Rather, he was not seeing that they are human beings deserving of mercy and justice, and there came upon the throne of Egypt a very tyrannical king.
وَكَانَAnd he wasيَرَىٰseeingأَنَّthatقَوْمَهُhis people((الْقِبْطُthe Copts)))مِنْare fromنَوْعٍa kindوَأَنَّand thatبَنِيthe Childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelمِنْare fromنَوْعٍa kindآخَرَ.another.
And he was seeing that his people (the Copts) are from one kind, and that the Children of Israel are from another kind.
الْقِبْطُThe Coptsمِنْare fromنَوْعِthe kindالْمُلُوكِ،of kings,خُلِقُواthey were createdلِيَحْكُمُوا،to rule,وَبَنُوand the Childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelمِنْare fromنَوْعِthe kindالْعَبِيدِ،of slaves,خُلِقُواthey were createdلِيَخْدِمُوا.to serve.
The Copts are from the kind of kings, created to rule, and the Children of Israel are from the kind of slaves, created to serve.
وَكَانَAnd PharaohفِرْعَوْنُPharaohيُعَامِلُused to treatبَنِيthe Childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelمُعَامَلَةَtreatmentالْحَمِيرِof donkeysوَالدَّوَابِّand beastsيَسْتَخْدِمُهَاhe uses themالْإِنْسَانُa personوَلَاand does notيُعْطِيهَاgive themإِلَّاexceptقُوتَthe sustenanceيَوْمِهَا.of their day.
And Pharaoh used to treat the Children of Israel like donkeys and beasts that a person uses and gives them only the sustenance of their day.
وَكَانَAnd he wasفِرْعَوْنُPharaohمَلِكًاa kingجَبَّارًاtyrannicalمُتَكَبِّرًاarrogantلَاnotيَرَىٰseeingفَوْقَهُabove himأَحَدًا.anyone.وَكَانَAnd he wasلَاnotيُؤْمِنُbelievingبِاللَّهِin Godبَلْbut ratherكَانَhe wasيَقُولُsayingأَنَاI amرَبُّكُمْyour Lordالْأَعْلَىٰthe Most High.
And Pharaoh was a tyrannical, arrogant king, not seeing anyone above him. And he was not believing in God, but rather he was saying, 'I am your Lord, the Most High.'
وَكَانَAnd he wasمَغْرُورًاproudبِمُلْكِهِof his kingdomوَقُصُورِهِand his palacesوَقُوَّتِهِ،and his might,وَيَقُولُand sayingأَلَيْسَIs notلِيmineمُلْكُthe kingdomمِصْرَof Egyptوَهَذِهِand theseالْأَنْهَارُriversتَجْرِيflowمِنْfromتَحْتِيْbeneath meأَفَلَاWill you notتُبْصِرُوْنَsee?..
And he was proud of his kingdom, his palaces, and his might, and saying, 'Is not the kingdom of Egypt mine, and these rivers flow from beneath me? Will you not see?'
