وَعَرَفَAnd he knewالرَّجُلُthe manمَاwhatيَمْنَعُpreventsالْقَوْمَthe peopleمِنْfromاتِّبَاعِfollowingمُوسَىٰMoses،,ذَٰلِكَthat isبِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyسُكَارَىٰare drunk
And the man knew what prevented the people from following Moses, that is because they are drunk.
بِسُكْرَةِwith the intoxicationالدُّنْيَا.of the worldly life.
With the intoxication of the worldly life.
وَالسَّكْرَانُAnd the drunk personمَاdoes notيَسْمَعُhearوَمَاand does notيَشْعُرُ.feel.
And the drunk person does not hear and does not feel.
ذَٰلِكَThat isبِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyحَيْثُwhereلَاnotيَسْمَعُونَthey hearصَوْتَthe voiceمُوسَىٰof Moses
That is because they do not hear the voice of Moses.
فَأَرَادَSo he wantedأَنْtoيُنَبِّهَهُمْawaken themمِنْfromغَفْلَتِهِمْtheir heedlessness،,فَقَالَ:and he said:
So he wanted to awaken them from their heedlessness, and he said:
يَاOقَوْمِmy peopleإِنَّمَاindeedهَٰذِهِthisالْحَيَاةُlifeالدُّنْيَاthe worldlyمَتَاعٌis enjoymentوَإِنَّand indeedالْأَخِرَةَthe hereafterهِيَisدَارُthe abodeالْقَرَارِof stability.
O my people, this worldly life is but [temporary] enjoyment, and indeed, the Hereafter is the abode of stability.
وَطَفِقَAnd beganالْجُهَّالُthe ignorantمِنْfromقَوْمِهِhis peopleيَدْعُونَهُto call himإِلَىtoالْكُفْرِdisbeliefوَالشِّرْكِand associating partners [with Allah]وَيَدْعُونَهُand they call himإِلَىٰtoدِينِthe religionالْآبَاءِ.of the forefathers.
And the ignorant from his people began to call him to disbelief and associating partners [with Allah], and they called him to the religion of the forefathers.
فَإِذَاSo whenقَالَhe saidلَهُمْto themتَعَالَوْاComeإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllah!!قَالُواthey saidلَهُto himارْجِعْReturnإِلَىٰtoدِينِthe religionالْآبَاءِof the forefathers!!
So when he said to them, 'Come to Allah!', they said to him, 'Return to the religion of the forefathers!'
وَلَمَّاAnd whenبَالِغُواthey exaggeratedفِيinالدَّعْوَةِthe invitationقَالَhe saidلَهُمْ:to them:
And when they exaggerated in the invitation, he said to them:
وَيَاAnd Oقَوْمِmy peopleمَاwhatلِيis for meأَدْعُوكُمْI call youإِلَىٰtoالنَّجَاةِsalvationوَتَدْعُونَنِيand you call meإِلَىٰtoالنَّارِthe Fire?تَدْعُونَنِيYou call meلِأَكْفُرَto disbelieveبِاللَّهِin Allahوَأُشْرِكَand associateبِهِwith Himمَاthat whichلَيْسَis notلِيfor meبِهِwith itعِلْمٌknowledgeۖوَأَنَاand Iأَدْعُوكُمْcall youإِلَىtoالْعَزِيزِthe Almightyالْغَفَّارِthe Forgiving.
And O my people, what is it [that is] with me that I call you to salvation, but you call me to the Fire? You call me to disbelieve in Allah and associate with Him that which I have no knowledge of, and I call you to the Almighty, the Forgiving.
وَقَالَAnd saidلَهُمُto themالرَّجُلُthe manالرَّشِيدُ:the rightly guided:أَيُّWhichنَبِيٍّprophetجَاءَcameمِنْfromآلِهَتِكُمْ؟your gods?
And the rightly guided man said to them: Which prophet came from your gods?
وَأَيُّAnd whichكِتَابٍbookنَزَلَ؟was revealed?
And which book was revealed?
وَمَنْAnd whoدَعَاcalledإِلَيْهِto it?
And who called to it?
إِنْThey are notهِيَtheyإِلَّاexceptأَسْمَاءُnamesسَمَّيْتُمُوهَاyou have namedأَنْتُمْyouوَأَبَاؤُكُمْand your fathersمَاnotأَنْزَلَsent downاللَّهُAllahبِهَاby themمِنْany
They are not except names you and your fathers have named; Allah has not sent down any [authority] by them.
