فَأَيْنَSo whereتَعَلَّمَاdid they learnالسِّحْرَ؟the magic?
So where did they learn the magic?
أَفِيInمِصْرَ؟Egypt?لَا!No!
In Egypt? No!
أَفِيInمَدْيَنَ؟Midian?
In Midian?
مَاWe have notسَمِعْنَاheardأَنَّthatهُنَالِكَthere isفَنًّا!art!
We have not heard that there is an art!
وَجَاءَAnd cameبَنُوthe children ofإِسْرَائِيلَ،Israel,وَهُمْwhile they wereبَيْنَbetween
And the children of Israel came, while they were between
يَأْسٍdespairوَرُجَاءٍ،and hope,وَلَعَلَّand perhapsالْيَأْسَdespairأَغْلَبُ!was greater!
despair and hope, and perhaps despair was greater!
اللَّهُMay Allahيَرْحَمُhave mercy onابْنَthe son ofعِمْرَانَ!Imran!
May Allah have mercy on the son of Imran!
اللَّهُMay Allahيَنْصُرُhelpبَنِيthe children ofإِسْرَائِيلَ!Israel!
May Allah help the children of Israel!
وَجَاءَAnd cameالسَّحَرَةُ،the sorcerers,وَأَقْبَلُواand they advancedبِخُيَلَائِهِمْwith their arroganceوَفَخْرِهِمْ،and their pride,
And the sorcerers came, and they advanced with their arrogance and their pride,
وَخَرَجُواand they went outفِيinمَلَابِسَgarmentsمُلَوَّنَةٍ،colored,وَخَرَجُواand they went out
and they went out in colored garments, and they went out
يَحْمِلُونَcarryingالْعِصِيَّthe staffsوَالْحِبَالَ.and the ropes.
carrying the staffs and the ropes.
وَخَرَجُواAnd they went outيَضْحَكُونَlaughingوَيَمْرَحُونَ،and rejoicing,الْيَوْمَtoday
And they went out laughing and rejoicing, 'Today
يَوْمُis the day ofالْفَنِّ!art!'
is the day of art!'
الْيَوْمَTodayيَرَىseesالْمَلِكُthe kingصَنِيعَنَا،our work,الْيَوْمَtoday
'Today the king sees our work, today
يَرَىseesالْقَوْمُthe peopleفَضْلَنَا!our superiority!'
the people see our superiority!'
فَلَمَّاSo whenجَاءَcameالسَّحَرَةُthe sorcerers,قَالُواthey said
So when the sorcerers came, they said
لِفِرْعَوْنَ:to Pharaoh:إِنَّ'Indeed,لَنَاfor us isلَأَجْرًاa rewardإِنْifكُنَّاwe areنَحْنُweالْغَالِبِينَthe victorious.'
to Pharaoh: 'Indeed, for us is a reward if we are the victorious.'
قَالَHe said,نَعَمْ'Yes,وَإِنَّكُمْand indeed youلَمِنَare amongالْمُقَرَّبِينَthe near ones.'
He said, 'Yes, and indeed you are among the near ones.'
وَهَذِهِAnd thisهِيَisجَائِزَةُthe rewardالْمُلُوكِ!of kings!وَهَذَاAnd this
And this is the reward of kings! And this
عَطَاءُis the giftالْمُلُوكِ!of kings!
is the gift of kings!
وَهَذَاAnd thisالَّذِيis that by whichيُخْدَعُare deceivedبِهِtherebyالرِّجَالُ!men!
And this is that by which men are deceived!
وَهَذَاAnd thisالَّذِيis that by whichيُصَادُare caughtبِهِtherebyالْأَبْطَالُ!the heroes!
And this is that by which heroes are caught!
وَفَرِحَAnd rejoicedالسَّحَرَةُthe sorcerersبِمَوَاعِيدِat the promisesفِرْعَوْنَof Pharaoh.
And the sorcerers rejoiced at the promises of Pharaoh.
