الْغُلَامُThe boyالَّذِيwhoالْتَقَطْنَاهُwe picked upمِنَfromالْبَحْرِ؟the sea?

The boy who we picked up from the sea?

أَلَمْDid notنُرَبِّكَwe raise youفِيْنَاamong usوَلِيْدًاas a childوَلَبِثْتَand you stayedفِيْنَاamong usمِنْofعُمُرِكَyour lifeسِنِيْنَyears

Did not we raise you among us as a child, and you stayed among us for years of your life,

وَفَعَلْتَand you didفَعْلَتَكَyour deedالَّتِيwhichفَعَلْتَyou didوَأَنْتَand youمِنَareالْكَافِرِينَthe disbelievers?

and you did your deed which you did, and you are one of the disbelievers?

وَلَمْAnd did notيَغْضَبْget angryمُوسَىMosesوَلَمْand did notيَكْذِبْlieوَلَمْand did notيَجْحَدْdenyوَلَمْand did notيَعْتَذِرْapologize

And Moses did not get angry, nor did he lie, nor did he deny, nor did he apologize,

بَلْratherأَجَابَhe answeredفِيwithصَرَاحَةٍfranknessوَوَقَارٍ:and dignity:

rather he answered with frankness and dignity:

قَالَHe said:فَعَلْتُهَاI did itإِذًاthenوَأَنَاand Iمِنَamالضَّالِّينَ.the misguided.

He said: I did it then, and I am one of the misguided.

فَفَرَرْتُSo I fledمِنْكُمْfrom youلَمَّاwhenخِفْتُكُمْ.I feared you.

So I fled from you when I feared you.

فَوَهَبَThen grantedلِيto meرَبِّيmy Lordحُكْمًاwisdomوَجَعَلَنِيand made meمِنَofالْمُرْسَلِينَ.the messengers.

Then my Lord granted me wisdom and made me of the messengers.

وَقَالَAnd saidمُوسَى:Moses:إِنَّكَIndeed youيَاOفِرْعَوْنُPharaohتَمُنُّboastعَلَيَّto meبِالتَّرْبِيَةِ،with the upbringing,

And Moses said: Indeed you, O Pharaoh, boast to me with the upbringing,

وَلَكِنْbutلَاdo notتَنْظُرُyou lookلِمَاذَاat whyوَقَعَتْit fellبِيَدِكَ؟into your hand?

but do you not look at why it fell into your hand?

وَكَيْفَAnd howأَمْكَنَكَwas it possible for youأَنْtoتُرَبِّيْنِي؟raise me?

And how was it possible for you to raise me?

إِنَّكَHad youلَوْifلَمْnotتَأْمُرْorderedبِقَتْلِthe killingالْأَطْفَالِof children

Had you not ordered the killing of children,

لَمَاwould notأَلْقَتْنِيhave thrown meأُمِّيmy motherفِيintoالنِّيلِthe Nile

my mother would not have thrown me into the Nile,

وَمَاand would notوَقَعْتُhave fallenبِيَدِكَ!into your hand!

and I would not have fallen into your hand!

وَهَلْAnd isهَذِهِthisنِعْمَةٌa favorتُعَدُّthat is countedوَتُذْكَرُand mentioned

And is this a favor that is counted and mentioned

فِيinجَنْبِcomparison toظُلْمِكَyour injusticeوَقَسَاوَتِكَ؟and your cruelty?

in comparison to your injustice and your cruelty?

إِنَّكَIndeed youعَامَلْتَtreatedقَوْمِيmy peopleكُلَّهُمْallمُعَامَلَةَlikeالْحَمِيرِdonkeysوَالدَّوَابِّ،and beasts,

You treated my people all like donkeys and beasts,

وَكُنْتَand you used toتَزْجُرُهُمْscold themزَجْرَlikeالْكِلَابِ،dogs,

and you used to scold them like dogs,

وَكُنْتَand you used toتَسُومُهُمْsubject them toسُوءَsevereالْعَذَابِ!torment!

and you used to subject them to severe torment!

فَأَيُّSo whatفَضْلٍmeritلَكَdo you haveإِذَاifكَفَلْتَyou sponsoredطِفْلًاa childمِنْهُمْ!from them!

So what merit do you have if you sponsored a child from them!

وَذَلِكَAnd thatأَيْضًاalsoعَنْout ofجَهْلٍignoranceوَخَطَأٍ!and error!

And that also is out of ignorance and error!
