وَذَاتَAnd oneلَيْلَةٍnight

And one night,

رَأَىsawإِبْرَاهِيمُAbrahamفِيinالْمَنَامِthe dream

Abraham saw in a dream

أَنَّهُthat heيَذْبَحُis slaughteringإِسْمَاعِيلَIshmael.

that he was slaughtering Ishmael.

وَكَانَAnd wasإِبْرَاهِيمُAbrahamنَبِيًّاa prophetصَادِقًاtruthful

And Abraham was a truthful prophet,

وَكَانَand wasمَنَامُهُhis dreamمَنَامًاa dreamصَادِقًاtruthful

and his dream was a true dream,

وَكَانَand wasإِبْرَاهِيمُAbrahamخَلِيلَthe close friendاللَّهِof God

and Abraham was the close friend of God,

فَأَرَادَso he wantedأَنْtoيَفْعَلَdoمَاwhatأَمَرَهُcommanded himاللَّهُGodفِيinالْمَنَامِthe dream

so he wanted to do what God had commanded him in the dream.

وَقَالَAnd saidإِبْرَاهِيمُAbrahamلِإِسْمَاعِيلَto Ishmael

And Abraham said to Ishmael:

إِنِّيIndeed Iأَرَىseeفِيinالْمَنَامِthe dreamأَنِّيthat Iأَذْبَحُكَam slaughtering you

“Indeed, I see in the dream that I am slaughtering you,

فَانْظُرْso lookمَاذَاwhatتَرَىyou see

so consider what you think.”

قَالَHe saidيَاOأَبَتِmy father

He said, “O my father,

افْعَلْdoمَاwhatتُؤْمَرُyou are commanded

do what you are commanded.

سَتَجِدُنِيYou will find meإِنْifشَاءَwillsاللَّهُGodمِنَamongالصَّابِرِينَthe patient ones

You will find me, if God wills, among the patient ones.”

وَأَخَذَAnd tookإِبْرَاهِيمُAbrahamإِسْمَاعِيلَIshmaelمَعَهُwith him

And Abraham took Ishmael with him,

وَأَخَذَand tookسِكِّينًاa knife

and took a knife.

وَلَمَّاAnd whenبَلَغَreachedإِبْرَاهِيمُAbrahamمِنًىMina

And when Abraham reached Mina,

أَرَادَhe wantedأَنْtoيَذْبَحَslaughterإِسْمَاعِيلَIshmael

he intended to slaughter Ishmael.

وَاضْطَجَعَAnd lay downإِسْمَاعِيلُIshmaelعَلَىonالْأَرْضِthe ground

And Ishmael lay down on the ground.

وَأَرَادَAnd wantedإِبْرَاهِيمُAbrahamأَنْtoيَذْبَحَslaughter

And Abraham wanted to slaughter,

فَوَضَعَso he placedالسِّكِّينَthe knifeعَلَىonحُلْقُومِthe throatإِسْمَاعِيلَof Ishmael

so he placed the knife on the throat of Ishmael.

وَلَكِنَّButاللَّهَGodيُحِبُّwishedأَنْtoيَرَىsee

But God wanted to see

هَلْwhetherيَفْعَلُwould doخَلِيلُهُHis close friendمَاwhatيَأْمُرُهُHe commands him

whether His close friend would do what He commanded him,

وَهَلْand whetherيُحِبُّhe lovedاللَّهَGodأَكْثَرَmoreأَوْorيُحِبُّhe lovedابْنَهُhis sonأَكْثَرَmore

and whether he loved God more or loved his son more.

وَنَجَحَAnd succeededإِبْرَاهِيمُAbrahamفِيinالِامْتِحَانِthe test

And Abraham succeeded in the test.

فَأَرْسَلَSo sentاللَّهُGodجِبْرَائِيلَGabrielبِكَبْشٍwith a ramمِنَfromالْجَنَّةِParadise

So God sent Gabriel with a ram from Paradise,

وَقَالَand saidاذْبَحْSlaughterهَذَاthisوَلَاand do notتَذْبَحْslaughterإِسْمَاعِيلَIshmael

and said, “Slaughter this and do not slaughter Ishmael.”

وَأَحَبَّAnd lovedاللَّهُGodعَمَلَthe actإِبْرَاهِيمَof Abraham

And God loved the act of Abraham,

فَأَمَرَso He commandedالْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsبِالذَّبْحِto sacrificeفِيonعِيدِthe Feastالْأَضْحَىof Sacrifice

so He commanded the Muslims to sacrifice on Eid al-Adha.
