كَانُواThey wereمُنْكِرِينَdeniersلِيُوسُفَof Joseph
They were deniers of Joseph,
لَاnotيَعْرِفُونَهُknowing him،,
not knowing him,
وَلَكِنْbutمَاnotأَنْكَرَهُمْdenied themيُوسُفُJoseph
but Joseph did not deny them;
بَلْratherعَرَفَهُمْhe knew them.
rather, he knew them.
عَرَفَKnewيُوسُفُJosephأَنَّthatهَؤُلَاءِthese
Joseph knew that these
هُمُareالَّذِينَthose whoأَلْقَوْهُthrew himفِيinالْبِئْرِthe well.
are those who threw him in the well.
وَأَنَّAnd thatهَؤُلَاءِtheseهُمُareالَّذِينَthose who
And that these are those who
كَانُواwereيُرِيدُونَwantingقَتْلَهُto kill him،,
were wanting to kill him,
وَلَكِنَّbutاللَّهَAllahحَفِظَهُsaved him.
but Allah saved him.
وَلَكِنَّButيُوسُفَJosephلَمْdid notيَقُلْsay
But Joseph did not say
لَهُمْto themشَيْئًاanythingوَلَمْand did notيَفْضَحْهُمْexpose them.
to them anything and did not expose them.
١٨18وandبَيْنَBetweenيُوسُفَJosephوَإِخْوَتِهِand his brothers
18 - Between Joseph and his brothers
وَكَلَّمَهُمُAnd spoke to themيُوسُفُJosephوَقَالَand saidلَهُمْto themمِنْFromأَيْنَwhereأَنْتُمْare you?
And Joseph spoke to them and said to them: From where are you?
قَالُواThey saidمِنْFromكَنْعَانَCanaan
They said: From Canaan
قَالَHe saidمِنْFromأَبُوكُمْyour father?
He said: From your father?
قَالُواThey saidيَعْقُوبُJacobبْنُson ofإِسْحَاقَIsaac
They said: Jacob son of Isaac
بْنِson ofإِبْرَاهِيمَAbraham
son of Abraham
قَالَHe saidهَلْDoلَكُمْyou haveأَخٌa brotherآخَرُanother?
He said: Do you have another brother?
قَالُواThey saidنَعَمْYesلَنَاwe haveأَخٌa brotherاسْمُهُnamedبِنْيَامِينُBenjamin
They said: Yes, we have a brother named Benjamin
قَالَHe saidلِمَاذَاWhyمَاnotجَاءَdid he comeمَعَكُمْwith you?
He said: Why did he not come with you?
قَالُواThey saidلِأَنَّBecauseوَالِدَنَاour fatherلَاnotيَتْرُكُهُleaves him
They said: Because our father does not leave him
وَلَاand notيُحِبُّhe likesأَنْtoيَبْعُدَbe farعَنْهُfrom him
and does not like him to be far from him.
قَالَHe saidلِأَيِّFor whatشَيْءٍthingلَاnotيَتْرُكُهُdoes he leave him?
He said: For what reason does he not leave him?
هَلْIsهُوَheوَلَدٌa childصَغِيرٌsmallجِدًّاvery?
Is he a very small child?
قَالُواThey saidلَاNoوَلَكِنْbutكَانَhe hadلَهُto himأَخٌa brother
They said: No, but he had a brother
اسْمُهُnamedيُوسُفُJosephذَهَبَhe wentمَعَنَاwith usمَرَّةًonce
named Joseph, he went with us once
ذَهَبْنَاwe went
we went
