وَكَانَAnd there wasفِيinمِصْرَEgyptوَالشَّامِand the Levantمَجَاعَةٌa famineكَمَاasأَخْبَرَinformedيُوسُفُJoseph.

And there was a famine in Egypt and the Levant, as Joseph informed.

وَسَمِعَAnd heardأَهْلُthe people ofالشَّامِthe Levant

And the people of the Levant heard.

وَسَمِعَAnd heardيَعْقُوبُJacobأَنَّthatفِيinمِصْرَEgyptرَجُلًاa manرَحِيمًاcompassionate,وَأَنَّand thatفِيinمِصْرَEgyptجَوَادًاa generousكَرِيمًاnoble one,وَهُوَand heعَلَىis overخَزَائِنِthe treasuriesالْأَرْضِof the land.

And Jacob heard that in Egypt there was a compassionate man, and that in Egypt there was a generous, noble one, and he is over the treasuries of the land.

وَكَانَAnd wasالنَّاسُthe peopleيَذْهَبُونَgoingإِلَيْهِto himوَيَأْخُذُونَand takingالطَّعَامَthe food,وَأَرْسَلَand sentيَعْقُوبُJacobأَبْنَاءَهُhis sonsإِلَىtoمِصْرَEgyptبِالْمَالِwith moneyلِيَأْتُواto bringبِالطَّعَامِthe food.

And the people were going to him and taking the food, and Jacob sent his sons to Egypt with money to bring the food.

وَبَقِيَAnd remainedبِنْيَامِينُBenjaminعِنْدَwithوَالِدِهِhis fatherلِأَنَّbecauseيَعْقُوبَJacobكَانَwasيُحِبُّهُloving himجِدًّاvery much

And Benjamin remained with his father because Jacob loved him very much.

وَمَاand notكَانَwasيُرِيدُwantingأَنْtoيُبْعِدَsend awayعَنْهُfrom him

and he did not want to send him away from him.

وَكَانَand wasيَعْقُوبُJacobيَخَافُfearingعَلَيْهِfor himكَمَاasكَانَwasيَخَافُfearingعَلَىforيُوسُفَJoseph.

And Jacob feared for him as he feared for Joseph.

وَتَوَجَّهَAnd headedإِخْوَةُthe brothers ofيُوسُفَJosephإِلَىtoيُوسُفَJosephوَهُمْwhile theyلَاnotيَعْرِفُونَهُknew him

And the brothers of Joseph headed to Joseph while they did not know him,

أَنَّهُthat heأَخُوهُمْis their brotherيُوسُفُJoseph,وَهُمْand theyلَاnotيَعْرِفُونَهُknew him

that he is their brother Joseph, and they did not know him,

أَنَّهُthat heيُوسُفُis Josephالَّذِيwhoكَانَwasفِيinالْبِئْرِthe well,

that he was Joseph who was in the well,

وَهُمْand theyيَظُنُّونَwere thinkingأَنَّهُthat heقَدْhasمَاتَdied

and they were thinking that he had died,

وَكَيْفَand howلَاnotيَمُوتُhe would dieوَقَدْand heكَانَwasفِيinالْبِئْرِthe well.

and how would he not die when he was in the well.

كَانَHe wasفِيinالْبِئْرِthe wellوَكَانَتِand wasالْبِئْرُthe wellعَمِيقَةًdeep.

He was in the well and the well was deep.

وَكَانَتِAnd wasالْبِئْرُthe wellفِيinالْغَابَةِthe forest,وَكَانَتِand wasالْغَابَةُthe forestمُوحِشَةًdesolate.

And the well was in the forest, and the forest was desolate.

وَكَانَAnd wasذَلِكَthatفِيinاللَّيْلِthe night,وَكَانَand wasاللَّيْلُthe nightمُظْلِمًاdark.

And that was in the night, and the night was dark.

وَجَاءَAnd cameإِخْوَةُthe brothers ofيُوسُفَJosephفَدَخَلُواso they enteredعَلَيْهِupon himفَعَرَفَهُمْso he recognized themوَهُمْwhile theyلَهُto himمُنْكِرُونَwere unaware.

And the brothers of Joseph came, so they entered upon him, and he recognized them while they were unaware of who he was.
