فَلَوْSo ifقُلْتُI saidلَهُمَاto them bothشَيْئًاsomething
So if I had said something to them both,
لَسَمِعَاthey would have heardوَسَمِعَand heardأَهْلُthe people ofالسِّجْنِthe prison
they would have heard, and the people of the prison would have heard,
وَلَكِنَّbutيُوسُفَYusufلَمْdid notيَسْتَعْجِلْhasten
but Yusuf did not hasten.
بَلْRatherقَالَhe saidلَهُمَاto them bothأَنَاIأُخْبِرُكُمَاwill inform you both
Rather, he said to them, 'I will inform you both
بِتَأْوِيلِof the interpretationالرُّؤْيَاof the visionقَبْلَbeforeأَنْthatيَأْتِيَكُمَاcomes to you bothطَعَامُكُمَاyour food.
of the interpretation of the vision before your food comes to you.'
فَجَلَسَاSo they both satوَاطْمَأَنَّاand were at ease.
So they both sat and were at ease.
ثُمَّThenقَالَsaidلَهُمَاto them bothيُوسُفُYusuf:
Then Yusuf said to them both:
أَنَاIعَالِمٌam knowledgeableبِتَأْوِيلِof the interpretationالرُّؤْيَاof the vision.
'I am knowledgeable of the interpretation of the vision.
ذَلِكُمَاThisمِمَّاis from whatعَلَّمَنِيtaught meرَبِّيmy Lord.'
This is from what my Lord has taught me.'
فَفَرِحَاSo they both rejoicedوَاطْمَأَنَّاand were at ease.
So they both rejoiced and were at ease.
وَهُنَاAnd hereوَجَدَfoundيُوسُفُYusufالْفُرْصَةَthe opportunity,
And here Yusuf found the opportunity,
فَبَدَأَso he beganمَوْعِظَتَهُhis sermon.
so he began his sermon.
١١11وَمَوْعِظَةُSermon ofالتَّوْحِيدِMonotheism
11 - Sermon of Monotheism
قَالَSaidيُوسُفُYusuf:
Yusuf said:
ذَلِكُمَاThisمِمَّاis from whatعَلَّمَنِيtaught meرَبِّيmy Lord.
'This is from what my Lord has taught me.
وَلَكِنَّButاللَّهَAllahلَاdoes notيُؤْتِيgiveعِلْمَهُHis knowledge
But Allah does not give His knowledge
كُلَّto everyأَحَدٍone.
to everyone.
إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahلَاdoes notيُؤْتِيgiveعِلْمَهُHis knowledgeالْمُشْرِكَto the polytheist.
Indeed, Allah does not give His knowledge to the polytheist.
هَلْDoتَعْرِفَانِyou both knowلِمَاذَاwhyعَلَّمَنِيtaught meرَبِّي؟my Lord?
Do you both know why my Lord taught me?
لِأَنِّيBecause Iتَرَكْتُleftطَرِيقَthe wayأَهْلِof the people ofالشِّرْكِpolytheism.
Because I left the way of the people of polytheism.
وَاتَّبَعْتُAnd I followedمِلَّةَthe religionآبَائِيof my fathers:
And I followed the religion of my fathers:
إِبْرَاهِيمَAbraham,وَإِسْحَاقَIsaac,وَيَعْقُوبَand Jacob.
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
مَاIt is notكَانَrightلَنَاfor usأَنْthatنُشْرِكَwe associateبِاللَّهِwith Allahمِنْanyشَيْءٍthing.
It is not right for us that we associate anything with Allah.
قَالَSaidيُوسُفُYusuf:
Yusuf said:
وَهَذَاAnd thisالتَّوْحِيدُmonotheismلَيْسَis notلَنَاfor usفَقَطْalone,
'And this monotheism is not for us alone,
بَلْbutهُوَitلِلنَّاسِis for mankindجَمِيعًاall.'
but it is for all mankind.'
ذَلِكَThatمِنْis fromفَضْلِthe bountyاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْنَاupon us
That is from the bounty of Allah upon us
وَعَلَىand uponالنَّاسِmankind,وَلَكِنَّbutأَكْثَرَmostالنَّاسِpeopleلَاdo notيَشْكُرُونَgive thanks.
and upon mankind, but most people do not give thanks.
