In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

نَبْذَةٌA briefعَنْaboutحَيَاةِthe lifeالْمُؤَلِّفِof the author

A brief overview about the life of the author.

هُوَHe isالْإِمَامُthe ImamمُحَمَّدُMuhammadابْنُthe son ofأَبِيAbuبَكْرِBakrابْنِthe son ofأَيُّوبَAyyubابْنِthe son ofسَعْدٍSa'adالزَّرْعِيُّal-Zar'iالدِّمَشْقِيُّthe Damascene

He is the Imam Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Ayyub ibn Sa'ad al-Zar'i al-Damascene

أَبُوAbuعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahشَمْسُShamsالدِّينِal-Dinابْنُthe son ofقَيِّمِQayyimالْجَوْزِيَّةِal-Jawziyah.

Abu Abd Allah, Shams al-Din Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyah.

يُعَدُّIs consideredابْنُIbnقَيِّمِQayyimالْجَوْزِيَّةِal-Jawziyahمِنْamongأَرْكَانِthe pillarsالْإِصْلَاحِof reformالْإِسْلَامِيِّIslamic

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyah is considered one of the pillars of Islamic reform

وَمِنْand amongالْعُلَمَاءِthe scholarsالْبَارِزِينَprominentوَالْمَشْهُورِينَand famousبِالتَّقْوَىfor pietyوَالْوَرَعِand righteousness

and among the prominent scholars famous for piety and righteousness,

وَالذَّكَاءِand the sharpnessالْحَادِّof intellectوَالْحَزْمِand decisivenessفِيinالرَّدِّrespondingعَلَىtoالْمُلْحِدِينَthe atheists

and sharp intellect and decisiveness in responding to the atheists,

وَأَصْحَابِand the followersالْبِدَعِof innovationsوَالضَّلَالَاتِand misguidances.

and the followers of innovations and misguidances.

وُلِدَHe was bornبِمَدِينَةِin the city ofدِمَشْقَDamascusسَنَةَin the yearسِتِّمِائَةٍsix hundredوَوَاحِدٍand oneوَتِسْعِينَand ninetyهِجْرِيَّةًAH

He was born in the city of Damascus in the year 691 AH

الْمُوَافِقِcorresponding toأَلْفٍone thousandوَمِئَتَيْنِand two hundredوَاثْنَتَيْand twoعَشْرَةَtenمِيلَادِيَّةًAD

corresponding to 1292 AD

فِيInبَيْتٍa houseعِلْمٍof knowledgeوَنَشَأَand he grew upمُحِبّاًlovingلِلْعِلْمِknowledgeوَالْعُلَمَاءِand scholars

in a house of knowledge, and he grew up loving knowledge and scholars.

مُنْكَبّاًdevotedعَلَىtoالتَّحْصِيلِacquiring itفَكَانَso he becameمَوْلَعاًardentفِيinجَمْعِcollectingالْكُتُبِbooks

Devoted to acquiring it, he became ardent in collecting books,

وَكَانَand he wasيَتَفَنَّنُskilledفِيinتَرْتِيبِهَاorganizing themوَتَبْوِيبِهَاand categorizing them.

and he was skilled in organizing and categorizing them.

تَتَلْمَذَHe studiedابْنُIbnقَيِّمٍQayyimعَلَىunderأَكْثَرِmostعُلَمَاءِof the scholarsعَصْرِهِof his time

Ibn Qayyim studied under most of the scholars of his time,

وَدَرَسَand he studiedالْفِقْهَfiqhوَالتَّفْسِيرَand tafsirوَالتَّوْحِيدَand tawhidوَاللُّغَةَand the languageالْعَرَبِيَّةَArabic

and he studied fiqh, tafsir, tawhid, and the Arabic language,

وَالتَّارِيخَand historyوَعَنَىand he tookعِنَايَةًcareخَاصَّةًspecialبِدِرَاسَةِin studyingالْفِرَقِthe sectsالْإِسْلَامِيَّةِIslamic

and history, and he took special care in studying the Islamic sects

بِرِعَايَةِunder the careشَيْخِهِof his sheikhابْنِIbnتَيْمِيَّةَTaimiyyah

under the care of his sheikh Ibn Taimiyyah,

حَيْثُwhereأَخَذَhe tookعَنْهُfrom himالْكَثِيرَmuchوَلَازَمَهُand accompanied himطَوَالَthroughoutحَيَاتِهِhis life

where he took much from him and accompanied him throughout his life,

وَأَوْلَعَand he became passionateفِيaboutكِتَابَاتِهِhis writingsوَانْكَبَّand devoted himselfعَلَىtoدِرَاسَتِهَاstudying them

and he became passionate about his writings and devoted himself to studying them,

وَقَامَand he undertookبِتَهْذِيبِهَاrefining themوَتَبْوِيبِهَاand categorizing themوَنَشْرِهَاand publishing themبَيْنَamongالنَّاسِthe people.

and he undertook refining them, categorizing them, and publishing them among the people.

وَكَانَAnd he wasيَنْتَصِرُdefendingلَهُhimفِيinجَمِيعِallمَاthatيَصْدُرُissuedعَنْهُfrom him.

And he was defending him in all that issued from him.

وَسُجِنَAnd he was imprisonedمَعَهُwith himفِيinقَلْعَةِthe fortress ofدِمَشْقَDamascus

And he was imprisoned with him in the fortress of Damascus,

وَأُهِينَand he was insultedوُعُذِّبَand torturedبِسَبَبِهِbecause of him.

and he was insulted and tortured because of him.

وَطُيفَAnd he was paradedبِهِwith himعَلَىonجَمَلٍa camelمُضْرَبًاbeing beatenبِالْعَصَاwith a stick.

And he was paraded with him on a camel, being beaten with a stick.

وَأُطْلِقَAnd was releasedسَرَاحُهُhis releaseبَعْدَafterمَوْتِthe deathشَيْخِهِof his sheikhابْنِIbnتَيْمِيَّةَTaimiyyah.

And he was released after the death of his sheikh Ibn Taimiyyah.

كَانَHe wasابْنُIbnقَيِّمٍQayyimحَسَنَof goodالْخُلُقِcharacterمَحْبُوباًbelovedعِنْدَbyالنَّاسِthe people

Ibn Qayyim was of good character and beloved by the people,

لَهُhe hadتَصَانِيفُworksكَثِيرَةٌmany.

and he had many works.
