وَلَمَّاAnd whenكَانَit wasسُؤَالُthe asking ofاللَّهِAllah

And when the asking of Allah

الهِدَايَةَfor guidanceإِلَىtoالصِّرَاطِthe straightالمُسْتَقِيمِpath

for guidance to the straight path

أَجَلَّthe most nobleالمَطَالِبِof requests

is the most noble of requests,

وَنَيْلِهِand attaining itأَشْرَفَthe most honorableالمَوَاهِبِof gifts

and attaining it is the most honorable of gifts,

عَلَّمَHe taughtعِبَادَهُHis servantsكَيْفِيَّةَthe manner ofسُؤَالِهِمْtheir asking

He taught His servants the manner of their asking,

وَأَمَرَهُمْand commanded themأَنْtoيُقَدِّمُواput forwardبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْهِHim

and commanded them to put forward before Him

حَمْدَهُHis praiseوَالثَّنَاءَand praiseعَلَيْهِupon Himوَتَمْجِيدَهُand His glorification

His praise, praising Him, and His glorification,

ثُمَّthenذَكَرَHe mentionedعُبُودِيَّتَهُمْtheir servitudeوَتَوْحِيدَهُمْand their monotheism

then He mentioned their servitude and their monotheism.

فَهَاتَانِFor these twoوَسِيلَتَانِare two meansإِلَىtoمَطْلُوبِهِمْtheir objective

These two are means to their objective.

تَوَسَّلُواThey seek nearnessإِلَيْهِto Himبِأَسْمَائِهِby His namesوَصَفَاتِهِand His attributes

They seek nearness to Him by His names and attributes,

وَهَاتَانِand these twoالْوَسِيلَتَانِmeansلَاhardlyيَكَادُeverيَرُدُّrejectمَعَهُمَاwith themالدُّعَاءَthe supplication

and these two means are such that supplication with them is hardly ever rejected.

وَيُؤَيِّدُهُمَاThis is supported byالْوَسِيلَتَانِthe two meansالْمَذْكُورَتَانِmentionedفِيinحَدِيثَيْthe two narrations ofالِاسْمِthe nameالأَعْظَمِthe Greatest

This is supported by the two means mentioned in the two narrations of the Greatest Name,

اللتَيْنِwhichرَوَاهُمَاnarrated themابْنُIbnحِبَّانَHibbanفِيinصَحِيحِهِhis Sahihوَالْإِمَامُand ImamأَحْمَدُAhmadوَالتِّرْمِذِيُّand al-Tirmidhi

which were narrated by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, Imam Ahmad, and al-Tirmidhi.

أَحَدُهُمَاOne of themحَدِيثُis the narration ofعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِBuraidahبُرَيْدَةَfromعَنْhisأَبِيهِfather

One of them is the narration of Abdullah bin Buraidah from his father,

قَالَwho said:«سَمِعْتُ"I heardالنَّبِيَّthe Prophetصَلَّىmay Allahاللَّهُexalt himعَلَيْهِand grant himوَسَلَّمَpeace

who said: 'I heard the Prophet, may Allah exalt him and grant him peace,

يَرَىseeingرَجُلًاa manيَدْعُوsupplicatingوَيَقُولُand saying:

while seeing a man supplicating and saying:

اللَّهُمَّ"O Allah,إِنِّيindeedأَسْأَلُكَI ask Youبِأَنِّيby virtue of the fact thatأَشْهَدُI bear witness

O Allah, indeed I ask You by virtue of the fact that I bear witness

أَنَّكَthat Youاللَّهُare Allah,الَّذِيthe Oneلَاthere is noإِلَٰهَdeityإِلَّاexceptأَنْتَYou

that You are Allah, there is no deity except You,

الْأَحَدُthe Oneالصَّمَدُthe Eternal Refugeالَّذِيwhoلَمْdoes notيَلِدْbegetوَلَمْand was notيُولَدْborn

the One, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor is born,

وَلَمْand there hasيَكُنْneverلَهُbeen to Himكُفُوًاanyأَحَدٌequivalent."

and nor is there to Him any equivalent."
