وَالْفَرْقُAnd the differenceمَذْكُورٌis mentionedفِيinحَدِيثٍthe narrationعُمَرَof Omarالَّذِيwhichانْفَرَدَwas uniqueبِهِto himمُسْلِمٌMuslim,,وَفِيand inحَدِيثٍthe narrationأَبِيof AbuهُرَيْرَةَHurairaالَّذِيwhichاتَّفَقَagreedالْبُخَارِيُّBukhariوَمُسْلِمٌand Muslimعَلَيْهِon it,,وَكِلَاهُمَاand both of themفِيهَاin itأَنْthatجِبْرِيلَGabrielجَاءَهُcame to himفِيinصُورَةِthe formإِنْسَانٍof a manأَعْرَابِيٍّBedouinفَسَأَلَهُand asked him,,وَفِيand inحَدِيثٍthe narrationعُمَرَof Omar::أَنَّهُthat heجَاءَهُcame to himفِيinصُورَةِthe formأَعْرَابِيٍّBedouin.. وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseفُسِّرَwas explainedالإِسْلَامُIslamفِيinحَدِيثٍthe narrationابْنِof IbnعُمَرَUmarالْمَشْهُورِthe famous,,قَالَhe said:: «بُنِيَ‘Islam is builtالإِسْلَامُon Islamعَلَىonخَمْسٍfive:: شَهَادَةٍthe testimonyأَنْthatلَاthere is noإِلَهَgodإِلَّاexceptاللَّهُAllahوَأَنْand thatمُحَمَّدًاMuhammadعَبْدُهُis His servantوَرَسُولُهُand His Messenger,,وَإِقَامِand the establishmentالصَّلَاةِof prayer,,وَإِيتَاءِand the givingالزَّكَاةِof almsوَحَجِّand Hajjالْبَيْتِof the House,,وَصَوْمِand fastingرَمَضَانَRamadan»’
And the difference is mentioned in the narration of Omar which is unique to Muslim, and in the narration of Abu Huraira which both Bukhari and Muslim agree upon. In both, it is that Gabriel came to him in the form of a Bedouin man and asked him, and in the narration of Omar: that he came to him in the form of a Bedouin.
وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseفُسِّرَwas explainedالإِسْلَامُIslamفِيinحَدِيثٍthe narrationابْنِof IbnعُمَرَUmarالْمَشْهُورِthe famous,,قَالَhe said:: «بُنِيَ‘Islam is builtالإِسْلَامُon Islamعَلَىonخَمْسٍfive:: شَهَادَةٍthe testimonyأَنْthatلَاthere is noإِلَهَgodإِلَّاexceptاللَّهُAllahوَأَنْand thatمُحَمَّدًاMuhammadعَبْدُهُis His servantوَرَسُولُهُand His Messenger,,وَإِقَامِand the establishmentالصَّلَاةِof prayer,,وَإِيتَاءِand the givingالزَّكَاةِof almsوَحَجِّand Hajjالْبَيْتِof the House,,وَصَوْمِand fastingرَمَضَانَRamadan»’
And likewise, Islam was explained in the famous narration of Ibn Umar, he said: 'Islam is built on five pillars: the testimony that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, the establishment of prayer, the giving of alms, the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting during Ramadan.'
وَحَدِيثُAnd the narrationجِبْرِيلَof GabrielيُبَيِّنُclarifiesأَنَّthatالإِسْلَامَIslamالْمَبْنِيَّbuiltعَلَىonخَمْسٍfiveهُوَisالإِسْلَامُIslamنَفْسُهُitself,,لَيْسَnotالْمَبْنِيُّbuiltغَيْرَother thanالْمَبْنِيِّbuiltعَلَيْهِon itبَلْbutجَعَلَhe madeالنَّبِيُّthe Prophetﷺ(peace be upon him)الدِّينَthe religionثَلاَثَthreeدَرَجَاتٍlevels:: أَعْلَاهَاthe highest of themالإِحْسَانُis excellenceوَأَوْسَطَهَاand the middle oneالإِيمَانُis faith,,وَيَلِيهَاand following itالإِسْلَامُis Islam.. فَكُلُّSo everyمُحْسِنٍexcellent personمُؤْمِنٍis a believer,,وَكُلُّand everyمُؤْمِنٍbelieverمُسْلِمٌis a Muslim,,وَلَيْسَbut notكُلُّeveryمُؤْمِنٍbelieverمُحْسِنًاis excellent,,وَلَاnorكُلُّeveryمُسْلِمٍMuslimمُؤْمِنًاis a believer,,كَمَاasسَيَأْتِيit will comeبَيَانُهُits clarification--إِنifشَاءَwillsاللَّهُGodـ-فِيinسَائِرِotherالأَحَادِيثِnarrations,,كَحَدِيثٍlike the narrationالَّذِيwhichرَوَاهُwas narrated byحَمَادِHammadبْنِbinزَيْدٍZaid,,عَنْaboutأَيُّوبَAyub,,عَنْaboutأَبِيAbuقَلَابَةَQalabah,,عَنْaboutرَجُلٍa manمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالشَّامِShamعَنْaboutأَبِيهِhis father،, عَنْaboutالنَّبِيِّthe Prophet،, قَالَhe saidلَهُto him:: «أَسْلِمْ‘Embrace Islamتَسْلَمْyou will be safeقَالَhe said:: «وَمَا‘And whatالإِسْلَامُ؟is Islam?قَالَ:He said:«أَنْ‘Thatتَسْلِمَyou submitقَلْبَكَyour heartلِلَّهِto God,, وَأَنْand thatيَسْلَمَMuslims are safeالْمُسْلِمُونَthe Muslimsمِنْfromلِسَانِكَyour tongueوَيَدِكَand your handقَالَ:he said:فَأَيُّ‘Whichالإِسْلَامِof Islamأَفْضَلُ؟is best?قَالَhe said:: «الإِيمَانُ‘Faithقَالَ:he said:وَمَا‘And whatالإِيمَانُ؟is faith?قَالَ:He said:«أَنْ‘Thatتُؤْمِنَyou believeبِاللَّهِin Allahوَمَلَائِكَتِهِand His Angelsوَكُتُبِهِand His Booksوَرُسُلِهِand His Messengersوَبِالْبَعْثِand in the resurrectionبَعْدَafterالْمَوْتِdeathقَالَ:he said:فَأَيُّ‘Whichالإِيمَانِof faithأَفْضَلُ؟is best?قَالَ:he said:«الْهِجْرَةُ‘Emigrationقَالَ:he said:وَمَا‘And whatالهِجْرَةُ؟is emigration?قَالَ:He said:«أَنْ‘Thatتَهْجُرَyou abandonالسُّوءَevilقَالَ:he said:فَأَيُّ‘Whichالْهِجْرَةِof emigrationأَفْضَلُ؟is best?قَالَ:he said:«الْجِهَادُ‘Jihadقَالَ:he said:وَمَا‘And whatالْجِهَادُ؟is jihad?قَالَ:He said:«أَنْ‘Thatتُجَاهِدَyou strive,, أوorتُقَاتِلَyou fightالْكَفَّارَthe disbelieversإِذَاifلَقِيتَهُمْyou encounter themوَلَاand do notتَغُلُّact treacherouslyوَلَاand do notتَجْبُنَturn cowardlyثُمَّthenقَالَsaidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allahﷺ(peace be upon him):«عَمَلَانِ‘There are two actionsهُمَاthat areأَفْضَلُthe bestالأَعْمَالِof deeds,, إِلَّاexceptمَنْfor the oneعَمِلَwho doesبِمِثْلِهِمَاsimilar to themقَالَهَاhe said itثَلاَثًاthree times«حَجَّةٌ‘A pilgrimageمَبْرُورَةٌacceptedأَوْorعُمْرَةٌ»a minor pilgrimage’.(۲)(2)
And the narration of Gabriel clarifies that the Islam built upon five is Islam itself; it is not any Islam except what it is built upon. But the Prophet (peace be upon him) made the religion three levels: the highest is excellence, the middle is faith, and following it is Islam. So every excellent person is a believer, and every believer is a Muslim, but not every believer is excellent, and every Muslim is not necessarily a believer. As will be clarified, if God wills, in other narrations, like the narration narrated by Hammad bin Zaid, from Ayub, from Abu Qalabah, from a man from the people of Sham about his father, that the Prophet said to him: 'Embrace Islam, you will be safe.' He said: 'What is Islam?' He said: 'That you submit your heart to God, and that the Muslims are safe from your tongue and your hand.' He said: 'Which Islam is best?' He said: 'Faith.' He said: 'And what is faith?' He said: 'That you believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and in the resurrection after death.' He said: 'Which faith is best?' He said: 'Emigration.' He said: 'And what is emigration?' He said: 'That you abandon evil.' He said: 'Which emigration is best?' He said: 'Jihad.' He said: 'And what is jihad?' He said: 'That you strive or fight the disbelievers when you encounter them and do not act treacherously and do not turn cowardly.' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'There are two actions, the best of deeds; except for the one who does similar to them.' He said this three times: 'An accepted pilgrimage or a minor pilgrimage.' (2)
