لَاnotتَجِدfindأَحَدًاanyoneيَتْرُكleavesبَعْضَsomeالسُّنَّةِsunnahالَّتِيthatيَجِبُshouldالتَّصْدِيقَbe believedوَالْعَمَلَand actedبِهَاupon itإِلَّاexceptوَقَعَfallsفِيintoبِدْعَةٍinnovation

You will not find anyone who abandons some of the Sunnah that must be believed and acted upon, except that they have fallen into innovation.

لَفْظٌThe termالأَمْرُcommandإِذَاifتَمَاضَتis usedتَنَاوَلَincludesالنَّهْيُprohibition

The term 'command', when used, includes the prohibition.

لَفْظٌThe termالإِيمَانُfaithإِذَاifأُطْلِقَis usedيُرَادُit meansبَهِto be meantمَاwhatيُرَادُis intendedبِلَفْظِby the termالبرُّrighteousnessوَالتَّقْوَىٰand pietyوَالْدِّينُand religion

The term 'faith', when used, means what is meant by the terms 'righteousness', 'piety', and 'religion'.

فِيَتَنَاوَلُIt encompassesأَعْمَالَthe deedsالْقَلْبِof the heartوَالجَوَارِحِand the limbsوَشَوَاهِدَand the evidenceذَٰلِكَfor thisمِنَfromالْقُرْآنِthe Quran

It encompasses the deeds of the heart and the limbs, and the evidence for this is from the Quran.

دَلَالَةٌThe indicationاسْمُof the nameالإِيمَانِfaithعَلَىonتَصْدِيقِthe beliefالْقَلْبِof the heartوَأَعْمَالِهِand its deedsوَعَلَىand onأَعْمَالِthe deedsالجَوَارِحِof the limbsكَدَلَالَةِis like the indicationأَسْمَاءِof the namesاللَّهِof GodعَلَىonذَاتِهِHis essenceوَصِفَاتِهِand attributes

The indication of the name 'faith' refers to the belief of the heart and its deeds, and to the deeds of the limbs, just as the names of God refer to His essence and attributes.

وَدَلَالَةُAnd the indicationأَسْمَاءِof the namesالْقُرْآنِof the Quranوَأَسْمَاءِand the namesالنَّبِيِّof the Prophet

And the indication of the names of the Quran and the names of the Prophet.

تَفْسِيرُThe interpretationقَوْلَهُof His sayingالتَّعَالَىٰthe Exaltedوَالَّذِينَand those whoآمَنُواbelievedأَشَدُّare mostحُبًّاdevotedلِلَّهِto God

The interpretation of His saying, the Exalted: 'And those who believed are most devoted to God.'

خَطَأٌThe errorقَوْلٌof the sayingجَهْمٍof Jahmوَمَنْand those whoاتَّبَعُوهُfollowed himحَيْثُwhereظَنُّواthey thoughtأَنَّthatالإِيمَانَfaithمَجَرَّدٌis merelyتَصْدِيقٌbeliefالْقَلْبِof the heartوَعِلْمٌand knowledge

The error of the saying of Jahm and his followers, where they thought that faith is merely the belief of the heart and knowledge.

غَلَطٌThe mistakeالْمُرْجِئَةُof the Murji'ahفِيinأَصْلَيْنِtwo principlesظَنَّهُمُtheir beliefأَنَّthatالإِيمَانَfaithمَجَرَّدٌis merelyتَصْدِيقٌbeliefوَعِلْمٌand knowledgeفَقَطْonlyوَأَنَّand thatكُلَّeveryمَنْwhoحَكَمَthe rulingالشَّارِعُof the legislatureعَلَيْهِon himبِالْكُفْرِas a disbelieverفَلَخْلُوُّis due to the emptinessقَلْبِهِof his heartمِنَofالتَّصْدِيقِthe beliefوَالْعِلْمِand knowledge

The mistake of the Murji'ah in two principles: their belief that faith is merely belief and knowledge only, and that everyone whom the legislature ruled as a disbeliever is due to the emptiness of their heart from belief and knowledge.

سَبَبُThe causeنُزُولِof the revelationيَاOأَيُّهَاthose whoالَّذِينَbelievedآمَنُواbelievedلَاdo notتَتَّخِذُواtakeالْيَهُودَthe Jewsوَالنَّصَارَىand the Christiansأَوْلِيَاءَas allies

The cause of the revelation of 'O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies.'

أَصْنَافُThe categoriesالْمُرْجِئَةُof the Murji'ah

The categories of the Murji'ah.

لَمَّاWhenهَاجَرَthe Prophet emigratedالرَّسُولُthe Messengerpeace be upon himصَارَbecameالنَّاسُthe peopleثَلاثَةَthreeأَصْنَافٍcategoriesإِمَّاeitherمُؤْمِنٍa believerوَإِمَّاorمُظَاهِرٍan apparentلِلْكُفْرِdisbelieverوَإِمَّاorمُنَافِقٍa hypocrite

When the Messenger ﷺ emigrated, the people became three categories: either a believer, or an apparent disbeliever, or a hypocrite.

بَيَانُClarifyingخَطَأِthe errorمَاof whatذَهَبَتthe Jahmiyyah claimedإِلَيْهِabout itالْجَهْمِيَّةُthe Jahmiyyahمِنْthatأَنَّthatمَاwhatفِيis inالْقَلْبِthe heartمِنَofالإِيمَانِfaithلَيْسَis notإِلَّاexceptالتَّصْدِيقُbeliefدُونَwithoutأَعْمَالِdeedsالْقُلُوبِof the hearts

Clarifying the error of what the Jahmiyyah claimed about what is in the heart of faith is not except for belief without the deeds of the hearts.

خَطَؤُهُمْTheir errorفِيinدَعْوَاهُمْtheir claimأَنَّthatالإِيمَانَfaithالَّذِيthatفِيis inالْقَلْبِthe heartيَكُونُisتَامًّاcompleteكَإِيمَانِlike the faithجِبْرِيلَof Gabrielوَأَبِيand of AbuبَكْرٍBakrبِدُونِwithoutشَيْءٍanythingمِنَofالْأَعْمَالِthe deeds

Their error is in their claim that the faith in the heart is complete like the faith of Gabriel and Abu Bakr without any deeds.

الْحَقُّThe truthأَنْis thatإِيمَانُfaithالْقَلْبِof the heartالتَّامِّthe completeيَسْتَلْزِمُentailsالْعَمَلَthe actionالظَّاهِرَthe apparent

The truth is that the complete faith of the heart entails the apparent action.

بَعْضُSomeالْمُرْجِئَةِof the Murji'ahيُفَرِّقُونَdistinguishبَيْنَbetweenاسْمِthe nameالإِيمَانِfaithوَالدِّينِand religionوَبَعْضُهُمْand some of themلَاdo notيُفَرِّقُونَdistinguish

Some of the Murji'ah distinguish between the name of faith and religion, while some do not distinguish.

خِلَافٌThe disagreementالْفُقَهَاءُof the juristsفِيoverالْمُنَافِقِthe hypocriteالزِّنْدِيقِthe hereticالَّذِيwhoيَكْتُمُconcealsزِنْدَقَتَهُhis heresyهَلْwhetherيَرِثُhe inheritsوَيُورَثُand is inherited

The disagreement of the jurists over the hypocrite, the heretic who conceals his heresy: whether he inherits and is inherited.
