إنَّهُمThey areمُؤمِنُونbelieversمُسلمُونMuslims

They are believers and Muslims.

ومَعَAnd withأَنْthatالإِسلامIslamدِينُis the religionاللَّهِof Allahالَّذِيwhichلاdoes notيَقبَلُacceptدينًاa religionغَيْرَهُother than it

And although Islam is the religion of Allah that does not accept any religion other than it.

وَهُوَAnd it isدِينُthe religionاللَّهِof Allahفِيamongالأَوَّلِينَthe first onesوَآخِرِينَand the last ones

And it is the religion of Allah among the first ones and the last ones.

لِأَنَّBecauseالإِسلامIslamعِبَادَةٌis the worshipاللَّهِof Allahوَحْدَهُaloneلاnotشَرِيكَa partnerلَهُto Himبِمَاwith whatأَمَرَHe commanded

Because Islam is the worship of Allah alone, without partner to Him, with what He commanded.

فَقَدْHowever,تَتَنَوَّعُthere may be diversityأَوَامِرُهُof His commandsفِيinالشَّرِيعَةِthe lawالواحِدَةِoneفَضْلًاbesidesعَنْfromالشَّرَائِعِthe other laws

However, there may be diversity of His commands in the one law, besides from the other laws.

فَيَصِيرُIt becomesفِيinالإِسلامIslamبَعْضُsomeالإِيمَانِof the faithبِمَاwith whatيَخْرُجُexitsعَنْهُfrom itفِيinوَقْتٍa timeآخَرَanother

It becomes in Islam some of the faith with what exits from it at another time.

كَالصَّلَاةِLike prayerإِلَىtoالصَّخْرَةِthe rock

Like prayer to the rock.

كَانَIt wasمِنَamongالإِسلامIslamحِينَwhenكَانَit wasاللَّهُAllahأَمَرَcommandedبِهِabout itثُمَّthenخَرَجَexitedمِنَfromالإِسلامIslamلَمَّاwhenنَهَىHe prohibitedاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُfrom it

It was of Islam when Allah commanded about it, then it exited from Islam when Allah prohibited from it.

وَمَعْلُومٌAnd it is knownأَنْthatالْخَمْسَthe fiveالْمَذْكُورَةَmentionedفِيinحَدِيثِthe hadithجِبْرِيلَGabriel

And it is known that the five mentioned in the hadith of Gabriel.

لَمdid notتَجِبْbe obligatoryفِيat theأَوَّلِfirstالْأَمْرِmatter

Did not be obligatory at the first matter.

بَلْButالصِّيَامَthe fastingوَالْحَجَّand the pilgrimageوَفَرَائِضَand obligatory dutiesالزَّكَاةَthe alms

But the fasting and the pilgrimage and the obligatory duties of alms.

إنَّمَاOnlyوَجَبَتْbecame obligatoryفِيinالْمَدِينَةِMedina

Became obligatory in Medina.

وَالَصَّلَوَاتِAnd the five prayersالْخَمْسَthe fiveإنَّمَاonlyوَجَبَتْbecame obligatoryلَيْلَةَon the nightالْمِعْرَاجِof the ascension

And the five prayers became obligatory on the night of the ascension.

وَكثيرٌAnd manyمِنَofالأَحَادِيثِthe hadithsلَيْسَتْare notفِيهاin themذِكْرَmentionالحَجِّthe pilgrimageلِتَأَخُّرِdue to the delayوُجُوبِهِof its obligationإِلَىtoسَنَةٍthe yearتِسْعٍnineأَوْorعَشْرٍtenعَلَىonأَصَحِّthe most validالْقَوْلَيْنِof the two sayings

And many of the hadiths mention not the pilgrimage due to the delay of its obligation to the year nine or ten according to the most valid of the two sayings.

وَلَمَّاAnd whenبَعَثَHe sentاللَّهُAllahمُحَمَّدًاMuhammadكَانَit wasمِنَofاتَّبَعَهُthose who followed himوَandآمَنَbelievedبِمَاwhatجَاءَcameبِهِwith itمُؤْمِنًاa believerمُسْلِمًاa Muslim

And when Allah sent Muhammad, it was of those who followed him and believed what he came with, a believer and a Muslim.

وَإِذاAnd ifمَاتَhe diesكَانَit wasمِنَofأَهْلِthe peopleالجَنَّةِof Paradise

And if he dies, he was of the people of Paradise.

ثُمَّThenإنَّهُindeedبَعْدَafterهَذَاthisزَادَincreasedالإِيمانَthe faithوَالإِسلامَand Islam

Then indeed after this, the faith and Islam increased.

حَتَّىUntilقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىExalted be He:﴿الْيَوْمَ"TodayأَكْمَلْتُI have perfectedلَكُمْfor youدِينَكُمْ﴾your religion."

Until He said, "Today I have perfected for you your religion."

وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseالإِيمانُthe faithفَإنَّfor certainlyهَذَاthisالإِيمانُfaithالمُفَصَّلُdetailedالَّذِيthatذُكِرَwas mentionedفِيinحَدِيثِthe hadithجِبْرِيلَGabriel

And likewise the faith, for certainly this detailed faith that was mentioned in the hadith of Gabriel.

لَمdid notيَكُنbeمَأْمُورًاcommandedبِهِwith itفِيinأَوَّلِthe firstالأَمْرِmatter

Did not be commanded with it in the first matter.

لَمَّاWhenأَنزَلَHe revealedاللَّهُAllahسُورَةًthe chapterالْعَلَقِAl-‘Alaqوَالْمُتَدَثِّرِand Al-Muddathir

When Allah revealed the chapter Al-‘Alaq and Al-Muddathir.

بَلْButإنَّمَاonlyجَاءَcameهَذَاthisفِيinالسُّورِthe chaptersالْمَدَنِيَّةِthe Medinanكَالبَقَرَةِlike Al-Baqarahوَالنِّسَاءِand An-Nisa’

But only this came in the Medinan chapters, like Al-Baqarah and An-Nisa’.

وَإِذاAnd ifكَانَit wasكَذَلِكَthusلَمnotيَلزَمْrequiredأَنْtoيَكُونَbeهَذَاthisالإِيمانُfaithالمُفَصَّلُdetailedوَاجِبًاobligatoryعَلَىonمَنthose whoتَقَدَّمَprecededقَبْلَنَاus

And if it was thus, this detailed faith is not required to be obligatory on those who preceded us.

وَإِذاAnd ifكَانَhe wasكَذَلِكَthusفَقَدْmayيَكُونَbeالرَّجُلُthe manيَعْبُدُworshipsاللَّهَAllahوَحْدَهُaloneلاnotيُشْرِكُassociatesبِهِwith Himشَيْئًاanythingوَمَعَهُand withالإِيمانَthe faithالَّذِيthatفَرَضَهُHe prescribedعَلَيْهِupon him

And if it was thus, the man may worship Allah alone, not associating anything with Him, and with the faith that He prescribed upon him.

وَهُوَAnd he isمِنَamongأَهْلِthe peopleالجَنَّةِof Paradise

And he is among the people of Paradise.

وَلَيْسَAnd notمَعَهُwith himهَذَاthisالإِيمانُfaithالْمَذْكُورُmentionedفِيinحَدِيثِthe hadithجِبْرِيلَGabriel

And not with him this faith mentioned in the hadith of Gabriel.

لَكِنَّButهَذَاthisيُقالُis saidمَعَهُwith himمَاwhatأَمَرَHe commandedبِهِwith itمِنَofالإِيمانِthe faithوَالْإِسلامِand Islam

But this is said: with him is what he was commanded of faith and Islam.

وَقَدْAnd mayيَكُونَbeمُسْلِمًاa MuslimيَعْبُدُworshipsاللَّهَAllahكَمَاasأَمَرَهُHe commanded him

And may be a Muslim who worships Allah as He commanded him.

وَلَاand notيَعْبُدُworshipsغَيْرَهُothersوَيَخَافُهُand fears Himوَيَرْجُوهُand hopes for Him

And does not worship others, and fears Him and hopes for Him.

وَلَكِنَّButلَمdid notيُخْلِصْsucceedإِلَىtoقَلْبِهِhis heartأَنْthatيَكُونَhe beاللَّهُAllahوَرَسُولُهُand His Messengerأَحَبَّmore belovedإِلَيْهِto himمِمَّاthan whatسِوَاهُمَاis besides them

But did not succeed in his heart that Allah and His Messenger be more beloved to him than what is besides them.

وَلَاand notأَنْthatيَكُونَhe beاللَّهُAllahوَرَسُولُهُand His Messengerوَالجِهَادَand jihadفِيinسَبِيلِهِHis pathأَحَبَّmore belovedإِلَيْهِto himمِنْthanأَهْلِهِhis familyوَمَالِهِand his wealth

And not that Allah and His Messenger and jihad in His path be more beloved to him than his family and his wealth.

وَأَنْAnd thatيُحِبُّhe lovesلِأَخِيهِfor his brotherمَاwhatيُحِبُّhe lovesلِنَفْسِهِfor himself

And that he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

وَأَنْAnd thatيَخَافُhe fearsاللَّهَAllahلَاnotيَخَافُfearsغَيْرَهُothers

And that he fears Allah and does not fear others.

وَأَنْAnd thatلَاnotيَتَوَكَّلَhe reliesإِلَّاexceptعَلَىonاللَّهِAllah

And that he does not rely except on Allah.

وَهَذِهِAnd theseكُلَّهَاall areمِنَofالإِيمانِthe faithالْوَاجِبِobligatory

And these are all of the obligatory faith.

وَلَيْسَتْAnd they are notمِنَofلَوَازِمِthe necessitiesالإِسلامِof Islam

And they are not among the necessities of Islam.

فَإنَّFor surelyالإِسلامُIslamهُوَisالِاسْتِسْلامُsurrenderوَهُوَand it isيَتَضَمَّنُincludesالخُضُوعَsubmissionاللَّهِto Allahوَحْدَهُaloneوَالْانْقِيَادَand obedienceلَهُto Himوَالْعُبُودِيَّةَand servitudeلِلَّهِto Allahوَحْدَهُalone

For surely Islam is surrender and it includes submission to Allah alone, and obedience to Him, and servitude to Allah alone.

وَهَذَاAnd thisقَدْmayيَتَضَمَّنُincludeخَوْفَهُHis fearوَرَجَاءَهُand hope for Him

And this may include His fear and hope for Him.

وَأَمَّاAnd as forطُمَأْنِينَةِthe tranquilityالْقَلْبِof the heartبِمَحبَّتِهِwith His loveوَحْدَهَاaloneوَأَنْand thatيَكُونَhe beأَحَبَّmore belovedإِلَيْهِto himمِمَّاthan whatسِوَاهُمَاis besides them.

And as for the tranquility of the heart with His love alone, and that he be more beloved to him than what is besides them.

وَبِالتَّوَكُّلِAnd by relianceعَلَيْهِon Himوَحْدَهُalone

And by reliance on Him alone.

وَبِأَنْAnd thatمُسْلِمًاbeing a Muslimيُؤْمِنُbelievesبِمَاwith whatفِيهin it

And that being a Muslim believes in what is in it.

كُلُّهَاAll areمِنَofالْإِيمَانِthe faithالْوَاجِبِobligatory

All are of the obligatory faith.

فَإنَّFor surelyالَّذِيthe one whoيُؤْمِنُbelievesبِهِin itيَجِبُmustعَلَيْهِupon himأَنْtoيُؤْمِنَbelieveبِهِin it

For surely the one who believes in it must believe in it.
