هَلْDoتَحَدُّوهُمْyou know themوَتَعْرِفُونَand you knowعَدَدَهُمْ؟their number?
Do you know them and know their number?
أَلَيْسَIs it notإِنَّمَاthat they onlyيَصِيرُونَbecomeفِيinذَٰلِكَthatإِلَىtoالإِقْرَارِthe acknowledgmentبِهِمْof themفِيinالجُمْلَةِgeneral
Is it not that they only become in that to the acknowledgment of them in general?
ثُمَّThenيَكُفُّونَthey refrainعَنْfromعَدَدِهِمْ؟their number?
Then do they refrain from their number?
فَكَذَٰلِكَSimilarlyزِيَادَةُthe increaseالإِيمَانِ.of faith.
Similarly, the increase of faith.
وَبَيَّنَAnd Ahmad explainedأَنَّthatكَوْنَهُمْtheir notلَمْnotيَعْرِفُواknowمَنْتَهَىthe limitزِيَادَتِه،of its increase,لَاdoes notيَمْنَعْهُمْprevent themمِنْfromالإِقْرَارِthe acknowledgmentبِهَاof itفِيinالجُمْلَةِ،general,كَماasأَنَّهُمْtheyيُؤْمِنُونَbelieveبِالْأَنْبِيَاءِin the prophetsوَالْكُتُبِand the booksوَهُمْand theyلَاdo notيَعْرِفُونَknowعَدَدَthe numberالْكُتُبِof the booksوَالرُّسُلِ.and the messengers.
And Ahmad explained that their not knowing the limit of its increase does not prevent them from the acknowledgment of it in general, as they believe in the prophets and the books while they do not know the number of the books and the messengers.
وَهَذَاAnd thisالَّذِيwhichذُكِرَwas mentionedأَحْمَدَ،by Ahmad,وَذُكِرَand mentioned byمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadبْنِbinنَصْرٍNasrوَغَيْرِهِمَا،and others,يُبَيِّنُclarifiesأَنَّهُمْthat theyلَمْnotيَعْلَمُواknowعَدَدَthe numberالْكُتُبِof the booksوَالرُّسُلِ،and the messengers,وَأَنَّand thatحَدِيثَthe hadithأَبِيof AbuذَرٍّDharrفِيinذَٰلِكَthatلَمْnotيَثْبُتْproveعِندَهُمْ.among them.
And this which was mentioned by Ahmad, and mentioned by Muhammad bin Nasr and others, clarifies that they did not know the number of the books and the messengers, and that the hadith of Abu Dharr in that is not proven among them.
وَأَمَّاAs forقَوْلِthe sayingمَنْof thoseسَوَّىwho equatedبَيْنَbetweenالإِسْلَامِIslamوَالإِيمَانِand faithوَقَالَand saidإِنَّthatاللَّهَAllahسَمَّىnamedالإِيمَانَfaithبِمَاas whatسَمَّىHe namedبِهِwithالإِسْلَامِIslamوَسَمَّىand namedالإِسْلَامَIslamبِمَاas whatسَمَّىHe namedبِهِwithالإِيمَانِ؛faith;
As for the saying of those who equate between Islam and faith and said that Allah named faith as what He named Islam and named Islam as what He named faith;
فَلَيْسَit is notكَذَٰلِكَ،like that,فَإِنَّfor indeedاللَّهَAllahوَرَسُولَهُand His Messengerقَدْhasفَسَّرَexplainedالإِيمَانَfaithبِأَنْهُas beingالإِيمَانُthe faithبِاللَّهِin Allahوَمَلَائِكَتِهِand His angelsوَكُتُبِهِand His booksوَرُسُلِهِand His messengersوَالْيَوْمِand the Dayالْآخِرِ،of the Hereafter,
it is not like that, for indeed Allah and His Messenger have explained faith as being the faith in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Day of the Hereafter,
وَبَيَّنَand clarifiedأَيْضًاalsoأَنَّthatالْعَمَلَthe actionبِمَاwith whatأُمرَwas commandedبِهِwith itيَدْخُلُentersفِيintoالإِيمَانِ،the faith,وَلَمْand did notيُسَمِّnameاللَّهُAllahالإِيمَانَthe faithبِمَلَائِكَتِهِin His angelsوَكُتُبِهِand His booksوَرُسُلِهِand His messengersوَالْبَعْثَand resurrectionبَعْدَafterالْمَوْتِdeathإِسْلَامًا،as Islam,
and clarified also that the action with what was commanded enters into the faith, and did not name Allah the faith in His angels, His books, His messengers, and resurrection after death as Islam,
بَلْbutإِنَّمَاratherسَمَّىHe namedالإِسْلَامَIslamالِاسْتِسْلاَمَas submissionلَهُto Himبِقَلْبِهِwith his heartوَقَصْدِهِand his intentionوَإِخْلَاصِand sincerityالدِّينِof religionوَالْعَمَلِand the actionبِمَاwith whatأُمرَwas commandedبِهِwith itكَالصَّلَاةِlike prayerوَ الزَّكَاةِand zakatخَالِصَةًpureلِوَجْهِهِ،to His face,
but rather He named Islam as submission to Him with his heart and intention and sincerity of the religion and the action with what was commanded, like prayer and zakat, pure to His face,
فَهَذَاthisهُوَisالَّذِيwhatسَمَّاهُHe namedاللَّهُAllahإِسْلَامًاIslamوَجَعَلَهُand made itدِينًاa religionوَقَالَ:and said:﴿وَمَن﴿And whoeverيَبْتَغِseeksغَيْرَother thanالإِسْلَامِIslamدِينًاa religionفَلَنthen certainly notيُقْبَلَbe acceptedمِنْهُfrom him
this is what Allah named Islam and made it a religion and said: ﴿And whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion then certainly not be accepted from him﴾.
وَلَمْAnd did notيَدْخُلْenterفِيْمَاinto whatخُصَّhas specificبِهِwith itالإِيمَانُ،the faith,وَهُوَand it isالإِيمَانُthe faithبِاللَّهِin Allahوَمَلَائِكَتِهِand His angelsوَكُتُبِهِand His booksوَرُسُلِهِ،and His messengers,بَلْbutوَلَاand notأَعْمَالِthe actionsالْقُلُوبِ،of hearts,مِثْلَlikeحُبِّloveاللَّهِof Allahوَرَسُولِهِand His Messengerوَنَحْوَand such thingsذَلِكَ،that,
And did not enter into what it has specific with it the faith, and it is the faith in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, but and not the actions of hearts, like the love of Allah and His Messenger and such things,
فَإِنَّfor indeedهَذِهِtheseجَعَلَهَاmade itمِنَfromالإِيمَانِthe faithوَالْمُسْلِمُand the Muslimالْمُؤْمِنُthe believerيَتَّصِفُdescribes himselfبِهَاwith itوَلَيْسَand it is notإِذَاifاتَّصَفَhe describes himselfبِهَاwith itالْمُسْلِمُthe Muslimالْمُؤْمِنُthe believerيَلْزَمُit is necessaryأَنْthatتَكُونَbeمِنَfromالإِسْلَامِ،Islam,
for indeed these made it from the faith and the Muslim believer describes himself with it and it is not if the Muslim believer describes himself with it that it be from Islam,
بَلْbutهِيَit isمِنَfromالإِيمَانِthe faithوَالْإِسْلَامِ،and Islam,فَرْضٌobligationوَالْإِيمَانُand the faith isفَرْضٌobligationوَالْإِسْلَامُand Islam isدَاخِلٌinsideفِيهِ،it,فَمَنso whoeverأَتَىbringsبِالإِيمَانِthe faithالَّذِيwhichأُمِرَwas commandedبِهِwith itفَلَاthen notبِدَwithoutأَنْthatيَكُونَit beقَدْhasأَتَىbroughtبِالإِسْلَامِthe Islamالْمُتَنَاوَلِcomprehensive ofلِجَمِيعِallالْأَعْمَالِthe worksالْوَاجِبَةِ،obligatory,
but it is from the faith and Islam is an obligation and the faith is an obligation and Islam is inside it, so whoever brings the faith which was commanded then it must be that he has brought the Islam comprehensively to all obligatory works,
وَمَنand whoeverأَتَىbringsبِمَاwith whatسُمِّيَwas namedإِسْلَامًاIslam,لَمْnotيَلْزَمْit is necessaryأَنْthatيَكُونَit beقَدْhasأَتَىbroughtبِالإِيمَانِthe faithإِلَّاexceptبدَلِيلٍwith evidenceمُنْفَصِلٍ،separate,
and whoever brings what was named Islam, it is not necessary that he has brought the faith except with separate evidence,
كَمَاasعُلِمَis knownأَنَّthatمِنَthoseأَثْنَىwhom praisedاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِمْupon himبِالإِسْلَامِwith Islamمِنَfromالْأَنْبِيَاءِthe prophetsوَأَتْبَاعِهِمand their followersإِلَىtoالْحَوَارِيِّينَthe disciplesكُلُّهُمْallكَانُواwereمُؤْمِنِينَbelieversكَمَاasكَانُواthey wereمُسْلِمِينَ،Muslims,
as it is known that those whom Allah praised with Islam from the prophets and their followers to the disciples, all of them were believers as they were Muslims,
كَمَاasقَالَsaidالْحَوَارِيُّونَ:the disciples:ءَامَنَّاWe believeبِاللَّهِin Allahوَاشْهَدْand bear witnessبِأَنَّاthat we areمُسْلِمُونَ)Muslims)[آل عمران] [Al-Imran]
as the disciples said: "We believe in Allah and bear witness that we are Muslims" [Al-Imran].
وَقالَ:And said:﴿وَإِذْ﴿And whenأَوْحَيْتُI revealedإِلَىtoالْحَوَارِينَthe disciplesأَنْthatآمِنُواthey believeبِيin Meوَبِرَسُولِيand in My Messengerقَالُواthey saidءَامَنَّاWe believeوَاشْهَدْand bear witnessبِأَنَّنَاthat we areمُسْلِمُونَ﴾Muslims﴾.[المائدة] [Al-Maidah]
And said: ﴿And when I revealed to the disciples that they believe in Me and in My Messenger, they said, "We believe and bear witness that we are Muslims﴾.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonأَمَرَنَاwe were commandedاللَّهُAllahبِهَذَاwith thisوَبِهَكَذَاand suchفِيinخِطَابٍ،the address,وَاحِدٍoneكَمَاasقَالَ:said:﴿قُولُوا﴿SayءَامَنَاWe believeبِاللَّهِin Allahوَمَاand whatأُنزِلَwas revealedإِلَيْنَاto usوَمَاand whatأُنزِلَwas revealedإِلَىtoإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimوَإِسْمَاعِيلَand Ismailوَإِسْحَاقَand Ishaqوَيَعْقُوبَand Yaqubوَالْأَسْبَاطِand the tribesوَمَاand whatأُوتِيَwas givenمُوسَىMusaوَعِيسَىand Isaوَمَاand whatأُوتِيَwas givenالْأَنْبِيَاءِthe prophetsمِنْfromرَبِّهِمْ،their Lord,وَمَاand whatأُوحِيَwas revealedإِلَىtoالنَّبِيِّينَthe prophetsمِنْfromرَبِّهِمْ،their Lord,وَنَحْنُand weمُسْلِمُونَ﴾are Muslims﴾.
And for this reason we were commanded by Allah with this and such in one address as He said: ﴿Say, 'We believe in Allah and what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqub and the tribes and what was given to Musa and Isa and what was given to the prophets from their Lord, and we are Muslims﴾.
