قالَAbuأبوAbuعبيدٍUbaid:هؤلاءِtheseجميعًاallيقولونَ:say:الإيمانُFaithقولٌisوعملٌword and actionيزيدُincreasesوينقصُ،and decreases,وهوَand it isقولٌthe sayingأهلِof the peopleالسنةِof the Sunnahالمعملِthe practicedبهِby itعندنا.with us.
Abu Ubaid said: "These all say: 'Faith is word and action; it increases and decreases,' and this is the saying of the people of the Sunnah that is practiced by us.
قلتُ:I said:ذكرَHe mentionedمنَofالكوفيينِthe Kufansمنَwhoقالَsaidذلكَthatأكثرَmoreمماthanذكرَhe mentionedمنَofغيرهم،others,لأنَbecauseالإرجاءُthe Irjā' (the postponement of actions)فيَinأهلِthe people ofالكوفةِKufaكانَwasأولًاfirstفيهمamong themأكثرَ،more,وكانَand wasأولَthe firstمنَtoقالَهُsay itحمادٌHammadبنِson ofأبيthe father ofسليمانَ،Sulaiman,فاحتاجَtherefore, he neededعلماؤهاits scholarsأنَtoيُظهرواshowإنكارَrejectionذلكَ،that,فكثرَtherefore, manyمنهمof themمنَwhoقالَsaidذلكَ،that,كماjust asأنَّthat٢٤٣243
I said: 'He mentioned more from the Kufans who said that than he mentioned from others; because Irjā' in the people of Kufa was more prevalent first among them, and the first to say it was Hammad son of Abu Sulaiman. Therefore, its scholars needed to show rejection of that, and so many of them said that, just as it has been noted.'
